About
Prague Zoological Garden is situated near the center of the Czech capital, in a unique rugged landscape on the bank of the Vltava River. It opened in 1931 and during its existence of more than 80 years it has risen to become one of the most prestigious zoos in the world. Today, it is the second most visited tourist destination in the Czech Republic, just after Prague Castle. 5,049 animals and 676 species live in Prague Zoo. You can explore 13 pavilions and 150 exhibits over 58 hectares. The kids will love the Bororo Reserve, chairlift, mini-train, observation tower, paddling pool and Children’s Zoo. The pride of the zoo is its Elephant Valley, home to a sizeable herd of Asian elephants. The Giant Salamander House, where you can see the largest amphibians in the world – the critically endangered Chinese Giant Salamanders – is extraordinary as well; and the African House with an adjacent vast meadow inhabited by herds of antelopes and giraffes is worth your attention, too.

- DylanSt Helens, United Kingdom10 contributionsA really good zooThis is a great zoo, with a number of animals and ability to roam around. We went on a cold day (it was snowing) but we still got to see a number of the animals. Many of the enclosures have indoor and outdoor sections so if the animal was not outside you could go and see it inside. We saw the elephants being looked after in their indoor accommodation and had good fun with the gorillas.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 26, 2023
- Madeline K4 contributionshuge zooWe had a lovely time at this zoo, it’s massive and took the whole day for us to walk around. There are lots of places to get food and lots of toilets, clear maps and signs to find your way around. The cable car was fun, and took you to the top of the zoo. Although some of the animals hadn’t been let out into their outdoor spaces you could still view them inside. Overall it was a great day!Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 5, 2023
- Dingbat1982Midsomer Norton, United Kingdom676 contributionsAmazing zooWe travelled most of the way by tram and then walked the last 20 minutes to the zoo. There was a long queue at the main entrance but a member of staff was there advising people to walk to one of the other two entrances (north or south). We walked to the south entrance and went straight in. Family ticket price is about £30 so really reasonable and worth every penny. The zoo has so much to do, loads of different animals and play areas as well as the chair lifts (approx £5 one way). Lots of places to eat, shops and toilets. Saw the penguins being fed. Really brilliant day out, so glad we visited. Got the bus back from outside the zoo then changed to the tram. Really east travel.Visited April 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 12, 2023
- Ognyan S7 contributionsAmazing zooBest zoo I’ve been to. You get close to so many different animals and it is a good time for both kids and adults. Things like the infrastructure, the surrounding nature, the lift and some of the indoor centres make this zoo standout. It is also really big and one visit might not be enough to see everything.Visited April 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 29, 2023
- Jon DBristol, United Kingdom273 contributionsTop class zooWonderful zoo just on the outskirts of Prague so about 15mins drive from the old town centre. Was told to plan 3 hours but you need 4-5 hours to fully appreciate this amazing place. The guide is well worth the 5KR fee and easy to navigate around although i recommend the cable car journey up to the top otherwise a long steep walk is in order. The zoo was clean, spacious and animals were of a fantastic variety and all looked well cared for.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 1, 2023
- AdyWiltonWilton, United Kingdom92 contributionsBetter than you average Zoo.I’m not a great fan of zoos and don’t often visit them as animals should really be free and out in the wild, not locked up behind bars. That said, captive breeding programmes are perhaps the last chance to try and prevent extinction through poaching and man’s greed at the expense of nature, and Prague Zoo does tick that box. It is huge - we were there walking around for nearly four hours - but it is still depressing to see Polar Bears going around in circles (a new much larger enclosure is being built), tiny cages for many birds, sea lions going backwards and forwards doing ‘lengths’ in their pool and other animals that should be at home on the African Savanna, stuck in a field. There are many restaurants and snack bars; the toilets are clean; there are facts, figures and other notes about every animal to educate visitors; everything is very well signposted and accessible, and together with the breeding programme I feel I can just about give 4 stars. There are many worse zoos out there but this is one of the better ones.Visited May 2023Traveled with familyWritten May 3, 2023
- Jeroen WLaren, The Netherlands36 contributionsSpot the different tigers!Generally people don't go to Prague to visit the zoo; it is more beer and medieval jousting type of place. But, boy, was the zoo a pleasant surprise. We have been to zoo's all over the world, but Prague is definitely a favourite for us now. Fantastically kept grounds, amazing animal enclosures (the giraffe and elephant grounds are truly stunning). This is where you find all three tiger families and spot the differences. The old chairlift to the top is a must do. Highly recommended.Visited May 2023Traveled with familyWritten May 30, 2023
- JennyCopenhagen, Denmark8 contributionsGreat place! We loved it!😍We loved it! Zoo was big and there was many animals. I read that it’s hard to see animals, but it was easy for us. There is a alot of restaurants/coffee places/souvenirs shops, so not a need to be prepared with own things. It was 14€, so it was cheap. Very nice place. U need your best walking shoes because it’s BIG. :-)Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 23, 2023
- ctripadHawaii52 contributionsLots of walking but worth itThe largest zoo I have ever been to. Apparently rated in the top ten in the world. They have larger areas for the animals living space so you walk further for some attractions. Lots of " up close" animal attractions such as for birds where you enter a area where there is no cage screens separating you from the birds living environment. We got there at opening and only saw maybe 3/4 of zoo by late afternoon but we were tired so returned home. Its worth the entrance fee price.Visited June 2023Written June 24, 2023
- Sue PBurgess Hill, United Kingdom489 contributionsBrilliant ZooWe have visited many zoos and this is one of the best. It is very big and steep in places so comfortable shoes needed. We were so impressed with the silver back gorilla, the younger one living with his ladies. (There are 2 separate enclosures each with a silverback) All the animals are very well cared for and have space. If you can spare time to spend most of the day, as it can't be rushed, we highly recommended this. If you are a senior take photo ID. We had copies of passports with us. My husband is over 70 and got in for 1 Koruna, I am 67 and got in for 1/2 price.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 30, 2023

My boyfriend and I went here on our last day as we felt we’d done most of the tourist attractions in Prague already and it ended up being our favourite part of the trip! It’s a little bit outside of the centre but honestly worth it and the public transport (metro then bus) brings you right to the entrance. The zoo is huge, we were there for 4 hours and didn’t even finish it, so leave yourself a whole day if you’re going. All the animals had really big enclosures which I’m very picky about and will make or break a zoo for me and all seemed extremely well looked after and the variety of animals was fantastic!! Also they have a chair lift that brings you up the mountain which you can go on for about a euro which not only saves your legs a trip but offers great views on the way up. Couldn’t recommend more!!

We visited Prague Zoo in June 2019 and overall we were very impressed by the size of the enclosures and the care of the animals. However, I did feel sorry for the polar bears as their enclosure is so small! There a lots of places to get food and it is reasonably priced. There is also a chair lift to access the higher levels of the zoo; if you're not good with heights though I wouldn't recommend it! It seems like there are a lot of changes happening at the zoo so hopefully the polar bear enclosure will be improved soon.

In hindsight it might have been wrong to choose the first day of Easter holiday, the zoo was packed and the line for tickets was around 20min. Unfortunately the server was down and we were not able to buy the tickets online so we had to wait. Apart from few very congested places (lion feeding, gorillas enclosure, seal feeding and kangaroo feeding) the zoo was not that crowded after all (even with almost 6000 guest at a time). The Prague zoo continues to develop to better accommodate guests as well as animals. Enclosures are becoming more natural and suited for the animal needs yet still allowing the guests viewing them. the ticket prices were rising throughout the years only slightly thanks to various donation programs. Ticket for adult is 250CZK (cca 13$). Its a very nice and entertaining walk. There is a lot of refreshment huts and restaurants, plenty of facilities.

The Prague zoo is on of my favorites places in Prague. Since the 2002 flood the Zoo came a long way. They keep improving the habitats and overall experience not only for the guests but for the animals as well. Reasonable price for entrance (250CZK is about 12$) which is much less then other zoos I’ve been to.

Its almost 15 min by Uber from center of Prague.
Not far ,easy access, should buy ticket on entrance and the price is about 10 euro which is very reasonable.
Has many kinds of animal which i never saw,and each of them are divided by continent or climate,im sorry for some wild ones like tiger ,panter or fishing cat which are in very small area, but needs exactly one day from morning, unfortunately we went on sunday and zoo was full of people, sounds ,and children and i guess most animal were afraid ,so we couldn’t see many kinds of them specially wild ones.
The zoo had some signs to show where you have to go but in some parts also were not any signs and make you confuse!

This zoo exceeded our expectations, the variety of animals and quality of their enclosures were very good. There were a lot of big animals like gorilla, lions, tigers, elephants etc and all the usual birds, lizards as well. The zoo is spaced out so it took us about 5 hours to walk around and see everything. It is definitely worth buying a map so you dont miss out a section. It is located with a cliff edge in the middle of the park so there are hills, there was a cable car that can take you up and down if you can't manage the slopes. There were good facilities, toilets, food etc dotted all around the place. The cost to get in was 200 CZK pp. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Prague!

The open spaces are beautiful. I loved seeing actual logs and branches being used inside and outside the enclosures, and creative use of spaces to traverse the zoo. The animals seem healthy. We were there in winter, so many of the African animals were inside, but many had the choice to go out. Not sure if the giraffes and elephants go out or not in winter. I was surprised at the vast number of species here.

What a fabulous day out. Really couldn’t recommend it highly enough. All the animals have lots of space and look well cared for, you can see the effort that has gone into preserving their natural environments and every effort has been made for the animals comfort and happiness. The food in the sit down restaurants is a little bizarre but there is plenty of hot dog stands located in various places around the zoo so plenty of choice! The zoo is so big you could easily spend two full days there if you have the time!

We couldn’t quite believe how far we walked that day!! The zoo is mapped over terrain which makes it different to many zoos I have visited before. I think it’d be better to visit in the warmer months so the animals are more active. There were so many animals, some of which we’d never seen. The price is very reasonable. All in all it was a great day out for anyone!

Huge zoo, excellent value for money. It was very quiet when we went and the weather was bad so most animals had gone inside but you could still see them. Prepare for lots of walking though, my fitbit measured that we’d done 6 kilometres whilst walking around the zoo! For food, we each got a chicken curry near the elephant exhibit which was reasonably priced, and was labelled as gluten free which I needed. The only downfall was that the polar bears had a small enclosure and were pacing up and down which I have heard they do when they are stressed. There were plans on display for their new, larger enclosure, but no details of when this is due to be made.

Is it possible to see the pangolins? I’m hoping to take my daughter in November all the way from the Uk because she is absolutely obsessed with them.

We went in January and people told us not to visit the zoo because it would be too cold to see the animals. But we went and we saw all the animals that were sheltered in special places, especially tropical animals were in special warm places. So i think you will be able to see the pangolins in whatever month you decide to go.

How much of the Zoo is in pavilions/enclosed areas? I want to bring my dog but I am afraid that we would miss a lot of it/have to keep leaving him tied up outside. Thank you!

Buona vacanza
