Kuala Lumpur - Abu Dhabi
International
Last October I decided I needed to go and visit a close relative whose birthday it was in Kuala Lumpur, where I used to live and work. I had not seen them since 2019 and they were suffering from cancer and dementia. I couldn't really afford the trip but it was a necessity given the overall health of that person so I went. I booked a return flight with Etihad which seemed a reasonable price from London to Kuala Lumpur and back via Abu Dhabi. On arrival in Malaysia I was asked to go to the immigration office who made me wait for about an hour to then tell me I needed to visit the tax office. The tax office was not central and to make a long story short I spent most of the time there visiting various tax offices and paying half of a tax bill I apparently owed, so I would be able to leave the country. (I paid my taxes when I was there in case anyone is wondering which would be a fair enough question given the city's reputation with tax and expats). None of this of course is the fault of Etihad but the trip went south from the start. After a pretty horrific trip I got to the airport having packed some remaining items up to my luggage limit of 30KG only to be told I was over. I pointed to my ticked and said that I had up to 30KG. The lady at the desk informed me that that was for outgoing trip but the limit was 23KG for the return journey. What was also interesting is that when you looked at the booking on the laptop or phone it showed the 30KG on the outward journey but cuts off just before the luggage on the return, meaning you have to click into the full attachment if you want to see the luggage clearly. So legal but underhanded, as most good cons are. I asked the staff at the desk why anyone would return form a trip abroad with less luggage than they left with but they weren't interested. The fine for being over my luggage was £277.00 and to top this off I then had to fly through Abu Dhabi airport which is sub-par to put it politely on both staff and design grounds. Placing a reduced maximum luggage on the return part of a long haul flight is yet another way an airline can screw its passengers over while telling the passengers its their fault. I have flown many times with Emirates and Malaysia Airlines on the same journey and have never once had reduced luggage. Perhaps I was unlucky but I would advise seeing alternative airlines and flying via much nicer airports for your stopover. Good luck and safe flying.

Online check in open 30 hours before flight. Well this system is a total scam and based on the fact that they not only want to sell you a flight but in total four seats for each leg you travel. It equals half your flight cost, ridiculous. And you are not qualified to check in online and it will put you on a sort of standby function as they need to check you in and give you an available seat (when available) at the airport, this is really the worst setback I have seen with any airline. How customer unfriendly can you be with basic service, Etihad?

It was an amazing pleasure to travel with Etihad. It was much better than Emirates and Lufthansa. It was better with or without the window seat. The food and in-flight entertainment was amazing. The first flight didn't have in-flight entertainment, but on the second one we did. AMAZING TRAVEL!

Despite numerous flights with Etihad Airways, prompted by a significant balance of miles, my experiences have plummeted from disappointing to unacceptable. Initially drawn by the allure of a reputed 5-star airline, I encountered systemic failures that marred every aspect of the journey, from loyalty program mishaps—a harrowing process to reclaim erroneously deducted miles—to a profound breakdown in onboard service and cleanliness. The in-flight experience, particularly in business class, was shockingly subpar. Meals presented bore an unsettling resemblance to animal feed, lacking any semblance of the promised regional cuisine or basic dietary information such as vegetarian or gluten-free options. This oversight not only disrespects passenger preferences but also disregards important dietary restrictions and religious beliefs. Moreover, the cabin crew's evident unfamiliarity with their service protocol added layers of confusion, turning the flight into a navigation through misinformation. The aircraft's cleanliness, or the lack thereof, further underscored the neglect Etihad seems to have for the comfort and well-being of its passengers. What compounds these issues is Etihad’s indifferent attitude towards feedback. Detailed, constructive criticisms intended to prompt improvement were met with silence, painting a picture of an airline indifferent to passenger experience. This level of service is a disservice, signaling a profound disconnect between Etihad's advertised standards and the stark reality. It demands accountability and immediate improvement. Passengers choose business class for quality and comfort, yet what Etihad delivers is a testament to a grossly negligent approach, highlighting a fundamental failure in delivering the bare minimum standards of service. Etihad must realize that excellence in service lies in attention to detail and genuine care for passenger needs, areas in which it has spectacularly failed. The current state of affairs is not just a failure; it's a stark indication that something is fundamentally broken at the core of Etihad Airways.

You are better off paying a few hundred quids extra on BA and getting 50 kgs checked in allowance. No point wasting time with Etihad. Absolutely the worst airlines I have traveled on. They expect you to carry 7 kgs in cabin baggage for a 14 hours international journey. The baggage allowance should include your laptop, charger, any electronics (as they anyway cannot be checked in) like ipad phone headphones etc. and no personal handbag allowed. If excess the cost is 4000 per kg. Which means I might as well abandon a bag at the airport with my underwears and other toiletries. Coz they are definitely not worth taking. Which idiotic airline has this “no personal baggage” rule for a 14 hours international flight? You are better off paying a few hundred quids extra on BA and getting 50 kgs checked in allowance. No point wasting time with Etihad it’s not worth it at all. Run in the opposite direction even if they give you a free flight

Hello, your checked baggage allowance would be based on the fare choice you book on. As for our cabin baggage policy is one bag up to 7 Kg, sometimes our ground staff waives off a bag if it is not too big and can be stored under the seat. However, this would depend on the aircraft and the flight load for the day, we keep this restriction in order to ensure there is enough space of all the guests on board and that the overhead compartment is not over filled or too heavy in order to ensure the safety of our guests and crew onboard. Thank you for understanding. *Aya
