The Pavaglione is a rare example of eighteenth-century civil architecture dedicated to the development of commerce and used to host markets previously kept in open public places. There are traces of other similar projects in other italian cities, but only Lugo succeded in building and using such a large functional building.
The Pavaglione was built starting in 1771 and completed in 1784 by Giuseppe Campana. It is an imposing quadriportico, which stands on the site of a more ancient late sixteenth-century loggia, for the needs of the silkworm cocoon market (papilio in Latin, hence the name of the complex), then flourishing. Subjected to various restorations in different times, the Pavaglione is an irregular quadrilateral with longer sides measuring 131 and 133 meters respectively, compared with 82 of the short ones. Presently it is the heart of the town, with shops and bars. The place where to go to see what is going on.

The Pavaglione must have been glorious back in the day. Nowadays it has an hair of abandonment and decline. It didn't help that at the centre there was a temporary, inflated children's playground. In front of it there plastic chairs for the parents to await their kids and there was a half-naked woman painted at the side of the ride. The rather crude way the bikini was painted suggests that the woman was initially fully naked. The whole effect showed poor taste and disregard for the surrounding area.

The Pavaglione is a landmark in Lugo. A huge area with some shops & the middle area where activities are held. It's always nice to walk here, where practically the city meets & people gather.
