We were in Turin for a few days in April and the B&B owner suggested we should visit Savigliano, about 40 minutes away.
What a beautiful old town! And hidden away near the main square is this beautiful 16 th century building! Some of the rooms are incredibly decorated after 400 years and the history of perfume is quite amazing.
Eau de Cologne is actually Eau de Piedmonte!
Fascinating displays in several rooms and the guide made it even more interesting.
Why isn’t this place in Lonely Planet etc!

I found information about this Museum on the net and headed over on one of the lazy after xmas days not expecting much. Boy, I was wrong not expecting much, as this visit turned my knowledge of the world of perfume upside down. Did you know it was actually Italian (not French), who developed the art of mixing perfume and even world famous 4711 Eau De Cologne was created and made timeless by an Italian? Guess what, this is just 1/1000 of what you learn by visiting this enchanted place in Savignano in Piedmont. What I loved about this museum is that is has mixed up in the same luxurious "vessel" of a Savoy family palazzo an exceptional combination of:
- fragrant garden with a odd, yet beautiful, fountain with large colored glass rocks symbolizing painter's palette
- gorgeous porcelain sculptures throughout
- several modern art pictures in the hallways of this magnificent palazzo
- exceptional quality exhibit about history of perfume-making in a gallery of palazzo rooms, which takes your breath away with the detail (explanatory cards in major languages each of the exhibit rooms) and depth of knowledge the staff of this wonderful museum tries to relay to the visitors
- several modern art installation stimulating your sense
- laboratory, where you can actually mix your own perfume using all the key ingredients.

Before you leave, make the point of stopping by the tiny gift shop, where you can buy impressive line-up of perfumes, including the deliciously packages in Murano glass 6 custom perfumes. What a delight!

An imaginative, beautifully presented museum in a splendid 17th Century palace. I had no idea eau de cologne was Italian! It was truly a delight for the senses and very interesting - and I’m not even interested in perfume. There are tours -and even demonstrations of how it is made - in English. On top of it all, Savigliano is an undiscovered medieval delight. I’m very glad I made the trip.

I went with a group of friends with the idea of spending an alternative afternoon in the area and I walked out pleasantly surprised and satisfied. The museum is very interactive and technological but, at the same time, it takes you back in time. I found the ticket to be a little overpriced but the overall experience was really worth it! Well done!
