This beach can be reached on foot from Hateruma Port in about 10 minutes. There is almost nothing on the beach except restrooms and showers (100 yen), so you will need to bring all your own food and garbage (there are no garbage cans).
The water is crystal clear, and since there are no rivers on Hateruma Island, there are few nutrients flowing in from the land, so the variety of fish and other aquatic life seems rather limited. The beach is ideal for relaxing and forgetting about the passage of time, rather than getting rowdy.
Snorkeling equipment can be rented at a nearby pension, and many tourists enjoy snorkeling with it.

This beach is THE REASON for taking the 1 hour ferry ride to Hateruma and staying a night or two. Yes, there is possibly equal or even better snorkeling in other parts of Okinawa if you take a boat to the perfect spot, but the fact that this amazing abundance and diversity in color and species of coral and fish is accessible straight from the beach makes Nishihama stand out above all others.
A major plus is that they also have free showers/bathrooms, and that rentals for snorkeling gear, floaty inner-tubes, life jackets, and drinks/food are also nearby.
Camping is prohibited but I'm not sure if anyone enforces it. Luckily if you want to stay the night at Hateruma for cheap there are a couple REALLY basic accommodations available (we found just up from the ferry for only 2000 yen/person per night).
If you do go, PLEASE AVOID STEPPING ON THE CORAL or touching it. We sadly saw several uneducated people standing/walking on the coral totally clueless to how fragile and easily damaged it is.
Also please take the time to educate yourself on the dangerous animals that could be encountered while snorkeling including certain sea snakes, jellyfish, fish, and sea stars.

It was the most beautiful ocean I had ever seen. It is a little far from Okinawa island and we had to use plane to go, but it is worthwhile to visit there. It had been chosen "japan's most beautiful sea'" In addition to that, at night the stars were very nice. I went with my family, and I lost track ot time.

breathtaking beach. snorkeling was great, water was perfect and coral reef was pretty close to shore so you don't have to swim far to see marine life. short bike ride from the ferry. watch out for the birds and shut your bags tight because they will rummage through your stuff... i accidentally left my backpack open and they ripped up a bag of chips. rarrrr

This beach and Kondoi beach in Taketomi were the highlights of our trip to the Yaeyama islands. It is worth getting to Hateruma just to see this beach, it is breathtaking. The sand and the clear blue water are perfect. You can walk along the beach and enjoy the beautiful landscape.
It is relatively close to Hateruma's port but I would recommend renting a bike. In the beach there are bathrooms and showers and vending machines with drinks. Plan to stay at least 3h in this beach, it is more than worth it.

Nishihama beach and star gazing were the main reasons for our planned overnight stay at Hateruma in early December. But on that day, the ferries were cancelled due to bad weather. So we did a day trip a couple of days later instead. You can easily walk for about 10-15 minutes from the ferry terminal at Hateruma to the beach. The multiple shades of blue, green and turquoise of the ocean and sky were breathtaking. At the breakwaters, you could be about 50m out and the waters are still shallow and clear. We dipped in the water, which was actually not that cold if you submerge deeper. There is a simple public toilet and shower where you can rinse off. (On hindsight we might have walked too far away to the breakwaters and missed seeing the corals and fishes nearer the toilets.) All in all, the beach is beautiful during good weather. But there was a fair amount of litter swept in at the shore and a beach clean up is needed. The rest of the island does not seem to have a garbage disposal system and would also do well with a clean up. A sugar factory right next to the beach also mars the beautiful nature.
Apart from Nishi beach, the island is really very quiet (there were more goats than humans), and in the vicinity of the beach and ferry terminal, we did not see any restaurants or cafes that were open when we were there. So best to bring your own food and beverages. Half of us got quite sea-sick on the 90-minutes ferry, so be prepared for that. (There are toilets on the ferry but you cannot access the open decks.) Ferries leave Ishigaki at 8.00, 11.50 & 14.30 hrs. The operators of the ferry would not accept any advance bookings and you need to check in half an hour before the ferry time to see if it is operating.
We enjoyed ourselves but given the time, money (7220Y / pax for a return ferry from Ishigaki), good weather, flexibility in schedule, endurance against seasickness needed to access Nishi beach, we are unlikely to return.

Best beach I have been to in Okinawa so far.
White sand, clear water like in many other places but what was surpsising is the amount and variety of fish you could see even a few meters in.
Facilities are minimal though. Hot and humid shower room, filled with sand is the only option to change clothes. Going from the beach to the village is an exhasuting climb if you are with a bike.

Hateruma Blue is just stunning. Coral and fish can be found within a few meters. There is washing facilities. The only drawback is that it is really too hot and shinny.

All photos you see from this beach do not need any filter. The color of the water is exactly that. There are different layers of "blue colors" due to the reef, depth and sand amount. You don't need to rent a bike to walk there. But you do need to bring some food since there will be no restaurant at the beach (thanks God for that).

Is It a good time to visit the beach mid-February or early March? Perhaps too cold for snorkelling?

I've only been to Okinawa waters in August when they are hottest, but even in February it's still ~70F (and warmer in shallow waters) so you can definitely still snorkel there, however if you are prone to getting cold, I'd recommend a thin 2-3mm wetsuit (either full suit, or at least a top piece) for both heat and to protect you from sunburn

We (7 people) are looking to stay close to Nishihama Beach in July and have found 2 places. One is: 405 Hateruma, Taketomi, Yaeyama District, Okinawa Prefecture 907-1751
and the other is:
ペンション最南端
Can anyone recommend either, or somewhere else?

Hi,
Haterumajima(波照間島) is the southest island of japan and very far from Tokyo (around 2,000KM).
If you want to go to haterumajima from Tokyo, please go to Ishigaki island by domestic flight first(around 3 hours). Then take bus from Ishigaki airport to ferry terminal(around 50mins.), then take high-speed ferry to haterumajima (around 1hour).
