Prachatice is a rather small tow, and the belltower of this church dominates even the marketsquare. Prachatice was among the ancient settlement of a border settlements, which are at important Golden trail. Stood on the site of old town, approximately a quarter of Prachatic hours north of Prachatic today. Was initially the Rector and the gift of King Vratislava belonging to the latter Vyšehradské soon after its establishment in 1070. Over time, the settlement became unsuitable for increased trade and tourism at the Golden Trail Chapter based and develop approximately between 1311-1323 a new business village, Prachatice today. In 1323, King John of Luxembourg made a city. In setting up new headquarters was in its plan for city church and cemetery, by the then habit between square and the city walls. Building of the temple, therefore teamed up to cities and were conducted in several stages. Structure of similar objects in neodlišovala surrounding towns. Especially the polygonal chancel with some serious and simple cross vaults. Also the foundations of the two towers, one of the oldest parts of the temple. During the Hussite wars, the Church had suffered a lot, mainly internal. Year 1468 repaired. In 1507, however, when fire virtually destroyed belltower and major damage was done to the whole Church.

The bell tower of the St. James church in Prachatice is accessible, you just need to cope with 152 stairs (I haven't counted them, that's what the ticket said). After you complete about a third of the stairs there is a ticket office which will charge you CZK 30 (about 1.2 euro) per person. As is usually the case with bell towers, the staircase is steep, wooden and a little bit creaky. The views of the town are very nice. Unfortunately, the viewing platform is covered by a fairly dense net which somewhat hinders photographing. There are also some exhibits within the tower, among others also on a bat colony which supposedly inhabits the tower. Sadly, I haven't seen any of the bats during my visit.

We visited this lovely little church as part of a pilgrimage group because it is the site where Saint John Neumann was baptized. Worth the stop and we were able to celebrate Mass there.

Sadly though what I remember most about Prachatice is the woman who was the attendant at the nearby public restrooms near the bus parking. She charged us 5x the proper fee and while it was just few dollars we lost, she is leaving pilgrims with a poor feeling against her town. What a sad thing to do to make a few extra dollars.

A beautiful house of prayer for those of a religious persuasion; an art gallery and architectural spectacle for others... there is even a severed human hand and a legend to explain why!

As is the case with so many Czech churches, what you see from the exterior is mainly the result of 19th century changes that rebuilt it in the image of what they thought it aught to be, however enter the church and much is original and full of atmosphere. The altar is from 1653.
The roof space is a very lightweight construction from 1474 and is something else and is a must to see. Access is not easy but is well worth the effort. I was told it was used as a salt store and you can see the access door on the outside so I assume that was correct, God and Mammon as ever.
