We came across this cafe today whilst in the area. Outside garden wasn’t to busy so we did all the Covid checks then found a table. Lovely you f waitress took our order. Both had wraps with salad and a latte and both were simply delicious 😋.. the view from what you can see is stunning. Really enjoyed here and highly recommend 😊

My husband and I popped into Torrington yesterday on our way home from a couple of days in North Devon. As we'd parked in the car park next door to the cafe, we earmarked it for a cup of tea before we left, after exploring the town. We ended up walking down Mill Street to the river, and then back up the winding path to the car park. Spectacular! On arrival at the cafe, we were greeted by a lovely lady dressed in traditional garb who brought our tea to us in the garden. We were intrigued by her dress, and she explained that the next day they were hosting an annual event to commemorate the Battle of Torrington. Hopefully we'll be able to attend next year's celebration.

We would have loved to have had more than just a cup of tea, but were still stuffed full from our earlier breakfast - however the tea was excellent value, lovely and strong (like Kenya tea?) and plentiful. The lady recommended we pop in and see the physic garden which is being restored - and a very nice gentleman showed us around that too. I did lose an earring in the vicinity, just in case anyone finds it - I've let the cafe know so they will have my contact details.

I only stopped in for what I was planning to be a takeaway hot drink, however the cafe and staff were so friendly and relaxed I decided to stay and read my book with a hot chocolate. Staff are super friendly and polite. I didn’t order anything to eat but the homemade cakes looked lovely. I will definitely be back.

We went to 1646 on a miserable wet day last week. The staff were welcoming, warm and friendly. Hot drinks were on the table very quickly, and the food soon followed. I had lentil, apricot chilli soup, and it was delicious, packed full of flavour. My partner had a bacon sandwich, piping hot with piles of crispy bacon in a locally made bap..our dog also loves going to 1646 as she is always given special treats of her own.
For dog lovers there is a large area to sit outside the restaurant. It has good seating and service is excellent. We go as often as we can when in Torrington.

Went there with family and friends for a drink on Torringtons Mayfair day. The place was quite busy and after waiting for 40 minutes we had to leave as my grandson was performing at the maypole. We were allowed to go back later to get our drinks by which time we also ordered some cakes. The cafe was a lot quieter, but again we had to wait quite some time, during which some of the group had to leave. Eventually two of us got our coffee (minus the milk) and food. My son went to see if he could cancel his order as he had to leave (he did get a refund) and ask for the milk. One member of the staff was a little rude after he asked for the milk. I doubt that we will be going there again.

If you are planning a day trip to RHS Rosemoor, an hour or so wandering around Great Torrington would be a really relaxing experience too. The main car park is so handy for the
Town Centre - come on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday and you could browse the stalls in the Pannier Market or the little shops that line the arcade. Don't ignore the local shops either, the staff are really friendly and appreciate your interest if you only …… even if you are "only looking".
And if at the end of your day and are heading for the M5 - take the B3277 all the way to Taunton, a lovely peaceful quiet drive [one or two very interesting hills] with a chance to enjoy some beautiful countryside.

A big thanks to all the staff at this attraction. Great value fo rmoney and certainly NOT tacky. The enthusiasm of the 2 main "characters" made the day. Funny, informative and very hands on. A great day out for any age group. Recommended highly. The 3 hour tour for around £7 was unbeatable. Carpark is cheap too, make sure you put a ticket on the car as it was patrolled.

Well run place. Add this to your list after Rosemoor and Dartington. You don't need long to look around, but worth it.
