About
Fortress of Bard complex is the protagonist of a wide project aimed at the creation of a cultural pole in the Western Alps of Italy. From impregnable defence for the valley the Fortress has been transformed into a gateway to the Alps’ culture and traditions, with a museum centre in the forefront of the international scenery dedicated to the mountain. Nowadays the Fortress offers only a part of the several activities planned by the project, whose purpose is to bring together innovative cultural spaces, services and accommodation in one single structure. To complete the project, in addition to the Museum of the Alps, The Children’s Alps, and the space for temporary exhibitions, Fortress of Bard will host two other museums (Frontiers Museum; Fortress Museum), an info-point to promote the cultural artistic heritage of Valle d’Aosta Region (already working); a school area provided with a lecture room for lessons, meetings and film projections; two conference rooms; a media centre; historical and thematic paths; a small refined hotel, a restaurant and a café (already working).

Almost intact from the moment of its construction, Fort Bard represents one of the best examples of early 1800 military strongholds.

a fantastic location in a narrow valley , go up to the fort on a glass encased lift which gives you fabulous views of the river ,mountains & town below . the old city very interesting small slate roofed houses & narrow cobbled streets . when I was there all the locals had put nativity scenes outside their houses . the exhibitions are always interesting ,I saw the golden age which was well worth the visit .Strolling down the streets on the way back stopped off at a nice little wine shop which served cold cuts ,local cheese ,bread & wine typical of valley aosta , very pleasant day indeed

This is not the medieval castle, tjis is the huge fortress built before WW1. The unbelievable thickness of walls seems to hold up today any type of weapon. The courtyard, bastions and deep caverns could be seen and visited. The exhibition theme is not correlate with fortress, but in any case it was very interesting visit to the end of 19 century fortress masterpiece.

We decided to visit Forte Di Bard as the weather was a little off and we thought it would be less busy than usual. We were wrong! Parking was a bit of an issue at first but eventually we succeeded. Short walk up rather rough terrain, so sturdy shoes recommended, and we arrived at the forte. The fort itself including the funicular/panoramic lifts are free entry. The exhibitions in the fort are chargeable per exhibition. We chose to visit the Alpine Museum, the Prison and Walter Bonnati photograph exhibition. Total cost for two adults was 34 euros. Would recommend the Alpine Museum. Excellent despite not being in English. Very good value for money as we spent around 5 hours there in total. Cafe very reasonably priced with attentive staff. Beautiful views. And added extra...the Age of Ultron was filmed there.

We were there to see a magic presentation and ee had the chance to visit an exposition from Sebastião Salgado. This amazing Brazilian photographer. The expo Genesis is very sensitive and somehow transmit feelings. Some of them look like paintings. Not to miss!!

Certainly worth a detour from the autostrada to visit this very impressive stronghold. We were on a right schedule so I wish we could have stayed longer but what we saw was impressive. Certainly visit the prisons if you are short on time. Much of the outside can even be visited without paying and parking is, at most, 3 Euro.

An amazing huge defensive fortress designed to protect the valley and now a cultural centre with various museums and exhibition spaces. 3 wonderful small glass funiculars take you to the top - these are free and you can wander the building for free - you only pay for exhibits and museums. Appeared to be fairly good facilities for those who are less physically able e.g lifts, golf buggies wheelchair ramps etc. Museums of the Alps was absolutely brilliant; very modern and sensory with lots of videos, pictures, moving exhibits and worked well even though we speak no Italian. Check what art is on display, at the time we visited they had a Picasso lithograph exhibition which was first class. We spent three hours and saw just over half the site.. Small nice cafe and plenty of toilets. Make sure to get off at the middle level on the way down and take the easy downhill walk through the pretty medieval village back to the car park. Multi storey car park was easy and virtually empty in Sept. Take a drive up towards Mont Avic National Park after for perfect photos of the fort and valley. One of our best days out in Aosta Valley.

Excellent view. Easy accessible owing to the lift. Nice info panels orund the forth with themes from history, geology, botany... Interesting Museum of the Alps. Problem = museum is lacking signs in english. Everything is written in Italina and French only. Be aware since the ticket is not cheap...

Ciao a tutti,
