About
Embedded in a magical mountain landscape on the rock, the mighty ruins of the castle, which was built by Emperor Charles IV to his retirement home and a monastery of Cölestiner drone. The rock mass was not only a popular motive for the painters of the romance like C.D. Friedrich, also the Brothers Grimm wrote here the legend of the Jungfernsprung. Around the Oybin are many stories and legends about knights, witches, buried treasures, underground passages, real virgins and evil robbers - and who knows what treasures are still hidden and buried here today. Enjoy the medieval flair of the castle, the romantic walls and the beautiful view. The weather almost does not matter. In the rain and fog, the ruins look mystical, in winter romantic dreamy and in good weather, fantastic views.

The famous painter Caspar David Friedrich who lived during the Romantic period in the 19th century loved this place. And when you like his paintings, you will like it here too. It's a must for Friedrich adepts. The walks through the woods are superb, especially in autumn, and then you reach the ruins of the gothic cathedral and castle, amidst a rough landscape of trees and rocks. Nice views on the village. When here, do not forget to visit Kelchstein to, a collection of strange rocks in red colour on the other side of the valley. And the wonderful village church. It's very special. This place, Oybin, has a kind of unique atmosphere you will not easily find elsewhere.

Great place. The castle itself has a very unique atmosphere. It is worth to make a trip to the surrounding area, ie the red rocks, etc.

Oybin is based in Saxony Germany and isn't far from the Polish and Czech border.
As the weather was miserable, we decided on a day out to this town. Stunning scenery on the drive over from Cz Rep. A very quiet town with a few eateries and then this amazing mountain with a castle and monastery ruins on top. You can get to it either by using your legs and walking up steps or by the land train which makes it way up to the top. Once on top, the scenery can be amazing (if it isn't raining as it was the day we went). A lot of history and a lot of walking. The town has a steam railway which will take you to Zittau City.

I have visited the castle with my little daughter. She loved it eventhough she was a bit tired climbing up the hill from the steam train station. We came to Oybin by steam train from Zittau and this made it really a nice family trip with so much to experience and see.

It doesn't immediately give up it's secrets this place but just wander off and you will find a magical place.
There is the usual stuff... Follow the tourist sheep. But...
For some reason not many people follow the 'circle path'. Please do it. It goes around the whole top of the site. Squeezing through rocks and walking along mountain paths. Absolutely great.
Also, the climb up the tower in the ruins of the abbey are not marked but the views from the top are literally 'on top of the world'. (When you enter go immediately right through the little door and up - the last bit is not for the faint hearted).
No information in English unfortunately so look up any history you need before you go.
There are some great walking trails from the top to meet the steam train later down the mountain. I wish I had researched this better before I went. Looked worth doing.
They also have themed days of dressing up and getting involved but look up when this happens.

A mystical ruin of gothic castle and monastery perched on a steep rock face in a small forested valley with many rocky peaks offering amazing views and great hiking.

I've been to Oybin ten times and I will come many times more.

Spectacular place, yet romantic and magical. There are many tracks and paths you can take to explore the ruins of the castle and enjoy the views. In the cathedral, blue skye has taken over the role of the collapsed ceiling. The place is very well maintained but make sure you keep an eye on your children - it would be more than easy to fall off one of the many cliffs and walls. The admission fee is reasonable and you can make this a whole-day trip, including the local village with a very old church or the special train.

Views from the castle are magnificent –on one side we can see a viewing tower on border hill Hvozdec and on the opposite side if the range of vision is good, also town Zittau.
While walking on the castle from each place there breathes history and also Czech history thanks to king Charles IV. who had here the imperial house established in 1364 and in 1369 founded Celestin monastic order. The monks served there until the mid-sixteenth century. Then the castle was destroyed by lighting and gradually decayed. Work of destruction added also the nature as in the 17th century there was a landslide of rocks and therefore until the 18th century the castle was abandoned and forgotten. The point of turn became then castle was discovered by the romantic poets and painters. In 1829 the modern history of castle begins with the removal of debris from the castle church. It is interesting that in such a large campus there served maximally 12 monks and during period of gradual abandonment only 6 monks. We can probably mention that the castle resisted the Hussites attacks in 1429.

One summer day in 2018 we decided to visit this castleruin in Oybin. We did not expect much from it, but what we saw was very surprising for us in a positive way. What a views and photo places! Definitely have to recomand to everybody. On top is a restaurant with classic food and also some fried stuff. No problem to spend there few hours and still find something new. We will come back for sure.
