About
Formerly a private mansion and studio built in the 19th century, the Museum is dedicated to the work of Jean-Jacques Henner considered at the beginning of the 20th century to be one of the most important painters of his time. Its display follows the chronological itinerary of this artist from his native Alsace to Paris, where he settled, and Italy after receiving the Prix de Rome. The numerous works from the artist's studio reveal the working methods of an "official" painter of the Impressionist period.

If like me you are visiting Paris and you would like something that is a little bit less crowded and a little bit more authentic than the main places packed with tourists, this is definitely the place to go. It makes for an excellent visit, the neighborhood is lovely and the museum is really well organised. It's a good place to go with kids too. We stumbled upon this place by chance and we kept thinking "why on earth isn't this place more well known". So there you are, we are sharing our secret. Enjoy Paris, it's such a lovely city!!!

I stumbled upon this hotel in one of the nicest parts of Paris, the beautiful and relatively quiet 17th arrondissement, essentially by chance. The building is a remarkable turn of the century mansion, with an original interior combining all sorts of influences, from neo-classical to Arabic. The museum is named after Henner, a French painter who was one of the most famous of his time, around the end of the 19th century / beginning of the 20th. His style is neo-classical and often patriotic - his native region, Alsace, was occupied by Germany at the time -, not necessarily the most original but a great representation of the reigning style of the era. The visit is not long, basically a great way to have a peak at what the French art world was looking like a century ago.

Located on Avenue de Villiers, Musée National Jean-Jacques Henner is a little museum dedicated to the works of Fresh painter Jean-Jacques Henner. Jean-Jacques It contains a lot of paintings depicting nudes and portraits and dreamscapes in the symbolism style. Jean-Jacques was noted for the use of sfumato and chiaroscuro in painting nudes, religious subjects, and portraits.

The museum is housed in a beautiful Hotel Particulier once owned by the painter Guillaume Dubufe. It is a really nice quaint house. It has a beautiful courtyard with greek columns and a glass ceiling, where they now hold sessions on his art. The upper storeys contain most of his art, and also his studio with his easel and paints. There are also some works that he had collected during his life.

The museum is well done, and easy to follow from room to room. There is an audio guide. The staff is really nice and friendly. It isn't usually very busy and you can enjoy your time there. The visit should take you about 1.5 to 2 hours.

The museum has an arrangement with Musée Gustave Moreau, Musée d'Orsay and the Opéra Garnier where you visit either place once, and you get a reduction on the ticket price of the other 3 for the 8 days following the visit.

The closest metro is Malesherbes on Line 3, although Monceau on Line 2 isn't far.

Tired of museums congested like subway platforms ? Would like to have the time to get closer, enjoy the silence, be alone in a room the artist's legacy ? See works that do 'speak' to you regardless of your own preferences ? Toss in a grand old house looking like a haunted place that has been freshly refurbished and you have an alternative to behemoth museums closer down to the river ( no names...). Hundred and some works of the same painter, just the quantity one can handle, great dispaly, and more works in the pipe so I understant that in a couple of years we'll have a café inside the off limits winter garden. Now that would be a treat of a scale as grand the café inside musée de la vie romantique. One hour to spare in Paris, want to feel cleaned inside but not use fish feet massage ? Go for Jean Jacques Henner ! Closer than Monet in Giverny and surely less crowded.

Museum did a good job of putting the work of Henner, a very important artist in his time but overlooked today, in some historical context. Even if you don't share his fondness of women with long red hair you will probably find the house interesting. I am attaching some pictures which I hope will help you determine if either his paintings or his home are interesting enough for you to make a trip too the 17th. I should also note that the nearby parc Monceau is nice and as the map, also pictured, indicates the neighborhood was home to many famous performers, painters, writers and composers.

This museum is strange: the location is in a north-west residential part of Paris, far away from most tourist attractions. We went on a Saturday afternoon and were the only (!) visitors when we arrived. I soon understood why: there is not much to see here. The rooms are full portraits (most unknown people) and reposing corpses (or "crucifixion nudes"). It took us 15 minutes to walk through. The good news is that the museum will be closed for renovation and extension until April 2015. In the meantime, very few people will miss it. Hopefully there will be some improvement, because until now this museum is a pathetic use of French tax payers money.

This is one of the lesser-known museums in Paris. The art of Jean-Jacques Henner is unique. Amazingly, we had the whole museum to ourselves and very much enjoyed our time discovering this exceptional artist.

I first saw an ad for this museum in the metro. Came home and googled Jean-Jacques Henner as I'd never heard of him before. Really interesting story about the artist - really worth doing your homework on his fascinating person. The museum has only been open for 2 years since complete renovation. It is in a fabulous house with lots of original furniture, etc. I can't believe that until the end of my visit, I was the only one there. I spent more time there than usual because a very talented violinist and her pianist were practising in the winter garden.

This is a great museum full of beautiful paintings of red heads (and others). Exceptional work and worth going to. As said by others, you can actually study the art and enjoy it without hoards of people running into you or climbing up your leg to take a picture. There are several creaky floors in this old house, with maybe 8-12 paintings on each floor. The paintings have a dreamy quality to them.

We happened upon the museum because it was included in the Paris Museum Pass. It was a great find. To us it was hidden treasure. Beautiful work. There was almost no one there, and it was a peaceful, inspiring experience. Henner deserves more attention, and we hope he’ll get it. Being artists ourselves, we were awed by his work ethic, skill and tenacity. If you want to a get away from the long lines and congestion of the major museums, and want to absorb some amazingly good art, please give this one a try.
