So, we checked out the Grande Synagogue in Paris, and it's pretty awesome. The outside is like a mix of cool architectural styles, and inside is just grand with fancy windows and a big dome.

They do tours, and we learned about how the synagogue played a role during World War II, which was interesting. We even joined a prayer service and felt the community vibe.

Next to it, there's a memorial for Jews deported during the war. It's a bit somber but makes you think.

Overall, the Grande Synagogue is not just a religious place; it's a cool spot to chill and soak in some history in the middle of Paris. Worth checking out if you're around.

Yes- we will now join that distinguished group of many people who tried to visit on a normal weekday and were declined and denied admission.

There were barriers, barricades and a police gendarme presence.

Even if I had told them that I would write a true and accurate review for TripAdvisor, they would not have let me in.

See my few photos here- from the outside.

You can go on the sabbath, but call first to give your details. But then- you might have to deal with how to carry your passport.

You can read my detailed review of the Agoudas Hakehilos Synagogue and see my photos of the Tournelles Synagogue with my review of the Jewish Quarter of Paris.

Spectacular synagogue!!
The architecture is beautiful!
Go there on Friday evening for the Shabbat prayers - it's the best way to visit this beautiful synagogue.
In my opinion there are another two amazing synagogues in Paris:
- The Portuguese synagogue (Synagogue Buffault), near the Great synagogue situated on the rue Buffault, in the 9th arrondissement of Paris.
- The Synagogue Nazareth, situated on the Rue Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth, in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris.

I went there expecting a nice old synagogue, what I saw was just breathtaking! The architecture is beautiful. The wall honoring the Jews of Paris who died fighting for their country in WWI was ver moving. I went back to services Friday night and the Passover Seder. There were Parisians and many from all over the world. Everyone especially the Rabbi and Alain, the caretaker were extremely welcoming and kind. Worth a visit!

Beautiful ediface. People at door are very friendly but they would not have a minyin if not for tourists. Women sit apart as this is a traditional service. Prayer books are easy enough to follow which is a good thing as no page announcements are made. Enjoyed the visit but would not choose as regular place of worship if I lived there. I just prefer my friendly Rabbi and Cantor and the less formal service nature of the Conservative service.

We attended Shabbat services twice and felt very welcomed by the congregants. The Temple is quite beautiful with very nice stained glass. We attended Friday night Shabbat dinner hosted by the temple. The people were lovely and the food was very good. However, the Rabbi never came over to welcome us although he interacted with the other temple members. We felt this slight made our temple experience less that perfect and for that reason we only gave three stars.

The Grande Synagogue de Paris, also known as Synagogue de la Victoire, was inaugurated in 1874 and classed as a historical monument in 1987. The building, with its beautiful Romanesque façade, is located in the 9th arrondissement. Visitors can also step inside to admire the interior and the soaring nave. The Synagogue de la Victoire is the centre of the Jewish community of Paris’s spiritual life. Official ceremonies and communal activities are held here throughout the year.

After Friday night service (beautiful synagogue, but nothing to write home about... few people for this huge space, Rabbi could hardly be heard, was very silent and held a long sermon in French) we were led to an adjacent room, where young local adults welcomed us to a lovely and warm Kabbalat Shabbat. We were about 50 people, locals and tourists. Atmosphere was great, good conversations, togetherness with kiddush, semirot and birkat hamason. Food consisted of nice sephardic dishes, three salads, couscous with two different toppings, wine, fresh Challah and a choice of "petits fours" for desert. Modest but very tasty. Altogether highly recommended. It is mandatory to register and pay in advance (look for website of la Victoire synagogue), we saw people sent away because they did not. Thank you, our brothers and sisters in France, may God keep you safe in these days of uncertainty.

The biggest and most beautiful synagogue in Paris. Just incredibly decorated and bright. It's a must see in Paris Jewish life.
