Before we left Rouen, I wanted to check out this small museum of ceramics, and I was glad I walked up the steps to the pretty courtyard and spent the 15 minutes or so wandering through the two floors of rooms viewing the gorgeous examples of pottery on display, from dishes to artwork to fireplace mantels to tiles. Admission is free, but there is a small gift shop that you can buy something from to support their mission. Recommended!

Lovely collection of porcelain, fayence, etc. i learned enough about the different types of local ceramics not to confuse them again. The collection focuses on the 15-18th centuries and production in Rouen and other important ceramic manufacturing towns.

This museum may inspire you to keep grandma’s china instead of just donating it to Goodwill!

I never expected to find such fine maijolica in Rouen - but they had a thriving industry and the museum has some lovely examples. The building itself is very fine and worth visiting in its own right.

This is a free entrance museum. I have to say its an amazing place. A lot of the ceramics were made in Rouen. Take time to visit here it is next to a little park down the road from the Station. The wooden stairs and floorboards are just awesome and all the exhibits are displayed very well.
There ate seats throughout so yo can sit to enjoy the ceramics. I fully recommend this museum.

The museum occupies the hotel Hocqueville since 1984 (said Bellegarde hotel). Dating from the seventeenth, it is built on the ruins of ''château de Rouen'', it was built on the ruins of the Roman theater of Rotomagus.

Around the corner from the art gallery and behind that beautiful little water park, up the very steep stairs - and there it is. Yes I am a collector, and I wondered through this very old, infrequently visited museum. The 2 attendants were really surprised to see an actual visitor.
The display contains several magnificent pieces, none better than the violin. However, though a marvel in its time, compared to the latest modern day products they looks flat and heavy.
But, I am really glad I visited this very historic record of French ceramics.

As a ceramic lover and collector I just loved this place.
Be careful not to point over the rope upstairs you will set off the alarm!

If you love ceramics, don't miss this gem. The collection of ceramics was extraordinary. One of my best moments was a woman pointing to some platters saying that her grandmother had a set of plates exactly like those displayed.

The Ceramics Museum is another part of the "Rouen Museum" - small thematic museums with free admission around the city. And while I say "small," in this case that still means three floors of galleries full of wonderful ceramics. Faience and lots of other styles (which ones, my wife could tell you better than I could). What I enjoyed most was seeing real Deruta plates - I used to work at a kitchenware store that sells modern mass-produced imitations, which are fine, but wow! seeing the real thing (16th century plates) was a revelation.

If you are in Rouen anyway and have nothing better to do, this is an interesting museum. There is a fairly good pictorial of the "faience" process. Their collection of Rouen faience is very limited. If as I did, you travel 7000 miles to see this museum you will be disappointed. There is, however, a spectacular collection at several stores in Le Mont St. Michael and at the "Manoir" in Saussey.
