A great museum with a vast variety of exhibits and stories . From Vikings - which we particularly enjoyed up to modern day.
The museum makes a great change from visiting Cathedrals, ruins and beautiful art galleries.
Would love to see more English translations and information on the amazing Gustavo-Flaubert Bridge.
Add this quaint museum to your must do list in Rouen.

An unexpected pleasure, from the friendly grettings to the scope of the museum itself. Having an abiding fascination with the Viking era, the displays relating to that were particularly interesting for me, but so were the more general historical discovery voyages associated with Rouen. Thoroughly recommended
If I could, I would issue a plea to the City authorities to support this museum, if only by getting it a bus link to the location. Well worth a visit and there is some retail/cafe therapy on route from the bus stops. There is plenty of parking if you have a car.

Very good maritime museum on the quai where the small Fred Olsen cruise ships dock. Doesn't look much from the roadside but is more obvious on the water side. Lots of models and I particularly liked the explanations of the rermoval of silt by dredging. Don't go on a hot day as it was sweltering . Cost, 4.20 euros. You can go aboard the peniche Pompom Rouge in the yard to see how they lived on board.

I finally managed to reach the museum during their limited opening hours. The exhibits range from huge marine engines to small recreational rowing boats to a retired barge. There is a good selection of ship models from previous times and other artefacts.to my mind the best feature is the restoration workshop where a selection of boats are being rebuilt and brought back to life. This aspect takes the museum into a new dimension as it is keeping the past alive, rather than merely documenting it.

Visited with friends almost by mistake. Ignore the outside of the building; inside it is a treasure trove of local maritime history, from the development of Rouen as a port, an explanation of how the Seine is kept free for traffic, superb models of the bridges and of (mainly) french naval vessels. There is an excellent exhibit on the building of a wooden vessel with the opportunity for children to interact.
For me this was one of the highlights of a cruise on the Seine

The museum is a gem of information about maritime history of the Rouen area. The exhibits of the bridge near by, shows the skill, ingenuity and construction used through history to cross the river.
The new bridge is just a short walk away.
There are lots of exhibits showing construction of boats and models of all sorts of crafts. Out side is an original barge that shows how a family lived and worked.
The whole museum is fascinating and well worth a visit.

The museum, housed in Building 13 on the Seine, has a restored barge that can be entered. There are several interesting exhibitions within the building. Interesting if you have any liking of ships, boats, ports and maritime history.

is this the museum that has the ex RNLI lifeboats on display?
I am looking for the ex lifeboat named
"Frederick Edward Crick " on which my father served as a member of Lowestoft lifeboat crew.
Thank you
Steve
