Dating from around the mid 1200s there is a fine sense of history walking around it and through the archway.
Wonderfully ornate with light and dark stone and a grand array of windows it is a treasured landmark.
Frescos adorn the sides and a colourful sculptural relief is another flourish. At the tower apex is a fine clock with golden hands and hours.

This is one of two city gates remaining of the original five. The other is called Martinstor which is not to be missed! This is a great photo op as is the other gate. This was built around 1250 originally open towards the inside of the city and was only enclosed with a stone wall in 1547. In 1572, a stone turret was added and in 1900 the height was doubled. It is worth your time to view!

This tower is the better of the two, and is a great landmark for finding your way to a lovely walk up the Schlossberg (there's a couple of veiwpoints nearby), and if you go to the left of the inside of the gate there's a lovely antique shop...follow along from there and you find the prettiest shopping laneway in Frieburg!

At this gate the pedestrian zone of the old city of Freiburg begins. The tower is very photogenic and the story of the name is worth knowing. It is indicative of the old enmity between the locals and the "Schwaben". Nice story ...

Went close to the gate. Didn't knew the history behind it at the time I was visiting. Learnt about it later. However, very interesting architecture. Wish I had a local guide to explain and tell me about it. Not to be missed.

One of the gates of the old town. Very beautiful and very nicely restored. An interesting old-new contrast is given by the tram line that passes through the arch of the gate, on which modern trams pass.

The Schwabentor was the entrance to the old town for everybody coming from east, meaning the black forest. The Street leading from there into the center ist called Salt Street, Salzstrasse, and marks an old celtic trading route. Why it is called the "Swabian" Gate is a long story that you better find out attending one of the fabulous guided tours, many of them provided in English.

Just 5 min walk from Freiburg main train station... It's nice place to visit at daytime and also later evening when streets are more quiet. Recommed strongly!

This tower is one of the main landmarks of Freiburg, don't confuse it with Martinstor, the Schwabentor is larger and with a beautiful painting of St George patron of this city, definitely go and see it.
