In the late 18th century certain interests deemed this grand tower an obstacle to evolving transport routes and wanted to demolish it. Fortunately they were persuaded otherwise by a wise Mayor and it continues to be gloriously extant,

A busy tram line now runs through the central opening that was widened by the above mentioned Mayor, as part of his campaign for its preservation.

One of five defensive towers in the city wall, it played a key role in warding off attackers.

Gorgeous dark and light stonework is admirable. On one side a plaque with a double-headed eagle is enshrined. On the reverse an ornate rectangle has elaborate script.

Clocks with golden hands and hours are towards the top on two faces.

Older of the two remaining Freiburg city gates, dating back to 1202, but rebuilt several times over the years. The current Martinstor appearance is tarnished with a McDonald’s sign (although thankfully no golden arches). Surprising that local officials have allowed this.

We arrived with out a real plan for what to do. We usually try to find a walking tour so we can enjoy the views and receive a little history and folklore, but I had a lot of trouble finding one that I could contact or that would respond. (I think a lot of them are part time businesses) Unfortunately, it appears there are very few tours (especially in English) and they are only on Saturdays (we were there on a Tuesday). So, I searched online and found documentation for a self guided walking tour. Not having internet service, I took screen shots of the information and planned our route. We loved it. It was simple and perfect. The market near the cathedral was really fun and the bits of history we learned were just what we wanted. The cathedral is under construction but available through a side entrance.

However, when we hit the city gates/towers, we didn't realize what was just on the other side. Eventually we went to the Tourism center to see if we missed anything big and they told us to go to the river. This is a must. The local towns people go here to eat lunch, to socialize or to just cool off. We traveled during a heat wave in August and it was really hot. We went down to the water and enjoyed skipping rocks and walking across the larger rocks, etc... just like the locals.

Also, I read somewhere that some of the mosaics on the town streets were made from the river rocks, so my kids really enjoyed searching for smooth rocks like what were used in the mosaics (plus they are perfect for skipping). It is a beautiful area and a little hidden gem if you are like we were and took photos at the gates and then turned around. I'm really glad we went back.

There is also an inexpensive ice-cream parlor very close to the Tourism Center, the scoops are smaller too, but the perfect inexpensive treat for folks who don't want a large ice-cream.

Also, I wrote a review for Hausbrauerei Feierling beer garden... a great place to cool off in the evening with some dinner and local brew.

Wonderful atmospheric part of town with lots of interesting boutiques as well as High Street shops. Outstanding architecture, ruined only by sadly ubiquitous fastfood place.

While the tower is old, much of the houses around it had been destroyed and so you find many commercial buildings along the main street which while part of the pedestrian zone is crisscrossed by the street cars forcing pedestrians to the side walks. But at least the air is good!

There's a great, kind of hidden museum of miniatures of the town in the olden days. The sign outside will tell you the admission times. Make a point of going inside, but be prepared for a few steps because it's up the tower! Great fun, and great to see that this art form is being kept alive with modern artists.

The Gates has stood here in some form since 1202. It was an anchor for the Medieval fortifications, but when the French military engineer Vauban redesigned the city’s ramparts in the 1600s it became obsolete.
On the city side of the passageway there’s a grim reminder of justice in days gone by, as a plaque commemorates three women burned as witches in the city in 1599.
The Shame now, there is a McDonalds Restaurant just behind the Martinstor. It killed the charm honestly. Some students have referred to Martinstor as McDonald's-Tor.

A Casual Morning at the Martinstor in Freiburg, Germany!!!!

The Martinstor (English Martin's Gate), a former town fortification on Kaiser-Joseph-Straße, is the older of the two gates of Freiburg im Breisgau that have been preserved since medieval times.
An odd sight here is a McDonald"s without the famous logo displayed.

This is one of the two remaining ancient city gates now near the centre of the old town. Sadly the ubiquitous Macdonalds has a franchise right next door and it looks very much like they sponsored the medieval gate. Don't know why that was allowed.

One of the gatesBeautifully renovated, but less beautiful than Schwabentor, in my opinion. More centrally located. of the old town.
