Under the picturesque streets of the old imperial city of Trier lies a whopping 20,000 m2 surface of Episcopal cellars with, among others, 300 barrels (each containing 1000 litre Riesling). The oldest part of the damp and scarsely lit vaulted cellar located under the Episcopal wine houses was built in 1593 by the Jesuits: the most recent one crosses a well-preserved Roman aqueduct which culminated in the Imperial Baths. The Episcopal wineries managed the vineyard property of the Episcopal Trier priest Seminary, the high Cathedral and Episcopal convict. Furthermore belongs the wine House of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-gymnasium to the possession of the Episcopal wine companies. In these wine cellars, which partly date back to Roman times, vinification is jointly done for all wine companies. The vineyards are located on the highest top position at Saar, Moselle and Ruwer (among other: Dhron Hofberger and Scharzhofberger), up to 87% are planted with the grape variety Riesling. According to them the Episcopal wineries of Trier are the largest Riesling vineyards in the Mosel region. In addition other grape varieties grown: Spätburgunder, Frühburgunder (Pinot noir précoce), Spätburgunder (Pinot noir), St. Laurent and Regent. All together the wine companies manage about 130 ha vineyards.

Lovely experience at the Saar Riesling Sommer event! Very friendly and engaging staff, some nice small dishes and fantastic wine, also from their 'Gastwinzer' (guest winemakers present during the event)

The wine making in this area of Mosel river has a tradition for centuries. The white burgunder wines are well known all around the world. I stopped by for some wine tasting, wine shopping and learning about the wine making in this area. I took some sparkling wines along with me and enjoyed them on the New Year´s celebrations. I must admit they are really great. Enjoy the visit but make sure, you get to taste the wines on-site.

The tour of the wine cellars was very informative in terms of both the wine and the history of the region. We received four generous tastings as part of the tour. A nice way to spend the afternoon.

We attended a 4:30 tour on a Friday. Our guide presented the entire tour in German, since we were the only two from the group of about 30 who did not understand German. However, one of the other participants kindly shared a brief summary with us during the four separate tasting stops, which we appreciated. It was a pleasant experience and we enjoyed the behind the scenes, underground tour of the facilities. Having been to the Roman Baths earlier that day, it was especially interesting to hear about the section of the wine cellar where a Roman aqueduct once ran to the imperial baths.
