At first I was not very hopeful about this whole thing as an email of enquiry went unanswered. Furthermore, I had not realised that it was a public holiday in Germany. However, the lady at the tourist office near Porta Nigra was very helpful. She called them to ensure that they were open on the day and then sold us the tickets for €18. This included a ride on a vintage bus driven by the owner from the bus stop next to the tourist office to the winery with a brief introduction on the area, tour of the winery, wine ‘tasting’ with copious amounts and a ride back to the main square (but he obliged to drive us to the train station. He was very friendly and very funny. Before we left, we had dinner at the restaurant. We felt no pressure at all to do this but thought it would make for a nice evening out. The menu is limited but the food is good and affordable with generous portions. My only qualm was that service was a little slow and waiting staff thin on the ground but what's the hurry while on holiday?

We went mainly to see the fabulous and wel-preserved, four-story high Roman gateway. This town was once the Roman capital of northern Europe. There are also many other Roman sites here, wonderful local Riesling wines and reasonably priced restaruants, although teh tonw has clearly suffered a lot of bomb damage during the war - so the old historic centre has some pretty boring, 'could be anywhere' modern streets and buildings scattered throughout . We went on a very enjoyable evening wine tour and tasting

We used the motorhome stellplatz for a two night stay. Previously we had used the large motorhome parking near the park and ride but this was so much nicer and very peaceful. An easy walk into town with regular buses too. We partook of the wine tasting and a meal on the second night but missed out on the tour due to a bit of a communication breakdown.
The wine was fabulous and the guide very informative and friendly - accomodating our lack of German well. The meal was wonderful - we had potato soup with home smoked fish and it was faboulous, followed by the speciallty pork. The cost of the wine tasting is around 10E per head, the meal around 20E for two course plus coffee and the motorhome camp 10E a night. All in all we spent 130E for two night stay, lovely meal for three and 2 bottles of Sek and 3 bottles of wine, pretty good when compared to an avverage campsite in UK!
The hosts were so friendly too

We experienced the same as other English speaking tourists. Even though the host (owner) knew we couldn't speak German, he rattled fast and was hard to follow. My boyfriend can speak some German but even he had a hard time understanding the host.
When the tour ended we were guided to the restaurant and asked again if we would like to have dinner there. We already made an reservation in the city center so this was no option for us. At our table three people did and you could see that they were trying to eat as fast as possible not to delay al others which didn't had dinner there (the total tour would be 1,5hrs and then we should be taking back to the city center).

Then we find out that already some people left and were transported back to the city. We asked the owner what happened since nobody else was told that the transport to the city center was leaving. He just lifted his shoulders, didn't care and neglected us. He went on drinking with his "important friends". For us it was clear. This has nothing to do with passion but only making money out of unknowing tourists.

We decided to take the public transportation (busstop nearby vineyard). Later on we spoke with our bed and breakfast host and he agreed and told us the owner is quite arrogant and rude.

What a beautiful place!!! Two km from Keizertermen, easy to walk or to bike, a forest, wineyards... also a very new piece of the wineyard which is just strated with a special subsidy. And what an unfriendly hostess.
We chose this place ‘cos we are interested in grapes and winemaking. We hoped for an easy evening by the restarant, and wanted to try the wines, we hoped to buy wines as well. Three times trying to book a winetasting, to book a table at a restaurant, but No!!!! The only one hostess was all the time too busy with a big group. How would you feel when you come to ask where you can take some water (really not available anywhere in the neibourhood of the pitches) and to pay for the camping) and the only one person available is saying in German to the group “let us quickly leave so we are not disturbed any more”! Incredible! We have never experinced that in Germany. Other people, staying in the “camping”, had a very similar experience. What a shame! Such a right place, such wrong attitude of the owners...

The tour started well as we were picked up in a beautiful vintage coach but arriving at the winery things turned a little on the downside for us. The wine we sampled was excellent, generous sizes (always +1dl) and there was absolutely no pressure to buy. The owner led the tour but sadly he didn't check on the nationalities and spoke only German which hindered my enjoyment somewhat as I struggled with his rapid and excitable delivery, his impersonations and sudden decrease/increase in volume. If you're more fluent in German than me you'd be fine. Another disappointment was that we expected the tour to last about an hour and half and to be returned to the town centre at that time. Sadly not. We were told that some of the group had elected to eat there. At the end of the tour we ushered into the dining area and seated at the end of a large table (diners one end...empty space...then us and another couple). We were abruptly "shushed" when we spoke as the group were told another story of the owners family! Whilst we were 'captive' and waited, we asked if we could have a little cheese .....the diners food arrived within +15mins of seating....our cheese 50mins and 4 requests. We returned much later than we had been told and much later than we had wanted.
Advice....make sure the owner knows the languages of group members and establish at the beginning what time your return will be.

We stopped here on the way back from a tour for a lunch and wine tasting. This is in fact a family run vineyard of some size and age but is still run by the family in a very "hands on" way.
The meal ,cooked by the owner wife and her staff, was first rate and consisted of local dishes and each course was accompanied by at least one on the vineyards excellent wines with a commentary from the owner on each wine. ,and they were not stingy with the amounts. By the end of the meal everyone had had around six good glasses of wine if not more as bottles were often left on the tables .No wonder he runs his own restored vintage motor coach bringing tours in from (very) nearby Trier. To be honest I dont remember much about the return trip to our river cruise ship, only that a good time was had by all.I vaguely remember the owner and his wife walking down to wave us off in a very friendly manner...after that its a sleepy blur
As I say not far from Trier yet a very pleasant rural area.Would I go again? well what do you think !!

Winery hosted our large group from a riverboat. The owner did the hosting and his crew did an excellent job serving and pairing with all the courses. Everything was the best. Only downside - their wines (Riesling) are not exported to USA! :(
Beautiful area.

We came here worth our camper with 2 little children. While the setting is very nice, between the vineyards, the restaurant lacked some basics. The child meal were 3 mini mini pizzas, we had to order another set for our 5 year old. My meal came half an hour after the 3 other meals. I was offered a glass of wine to make up for the delay. The hospitality is excellent on the other hand. It's just the shivery that lacks a little bit. For campers it's a must, due to the lack of better alternatives.

A tour around wine yard lead by the owner, with some history of the family, wine yard and the region, a bit wine making explanations, a few glimpses into future, all of this spiced with a joke or two - makes an interesting story to listen. Tasting of 5 excellent white wines on the way makes it more engaging too. All of that costing only 10 euro per person sounds rather symbolic fee.
