About
The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum offers visitors an overview of art from the 13th century to the late 20th century. In the nearly one thousand works on display, visitors can contemplate the major periods and pictorial schools of western art such as the Renaissance, Mannerism, the Baroque, Rococo, Romanticism and the art of the 19th and 20th centuries up to Pop Art. The museum also features works from some movements not represented in state-owned collections, such as Impressionism, Fauvism, German Expressionism and the experimental avant-garde movements of the early 20th century. In addition, it boasts an important collection of 19th-century American painting not found in any other European museum institutions. Permanent collection hours: Tuesday to Sunday: 10.00 to 19.00 Monday: 12.00 - 16.00* *Free entry with the sponsorship of Mastercard.

- lozbadBristol, United Kingdom47 contributionsExcellent collection of artworkThis was my favourite gallery in Madrid, even over the Prado. The collection is very well laid out over several floors with plenty of room to view the pieces. I spent at least 4 hours here and could easily come back again. The staff in the shop were also very helpful. One thing to note - if you have the 3 gallery 'ticket' you still need to get another ticket when you arrive here, you just don't need to pay for it which was a bit confusing.Visited March 2023Written March 28, 2023
- Paul and Tracey B37 contributionsBright airy interesting Art GalleryThis place is a little confusing to find your way around if you don't want to go to the main temporary exhibition, but once you know what you're doing is great. Cloakrooms for rucksacks make the trip nice and free. Plenty of seats in the centre of rooms for viewing/ resting/ waiting. We viewed the permanent collections and they were a fantastic journey through the timeline of the art world. So interesting to view some North American painters we hadn't come across before and to see unfamiliar works by familiar artists. The restaurant was lovely and there are toilets available when you need them.Thank you for your feedback, we are glad you enjoyed! - DesmondJH86 contributionsAn Unexpectedly Great MuseumI have been to many many museums throughout the world. Today's visit to the Thyssen was the most unexpectedly satisfying visit to a museum I have ever experienced. The collection is unbelievably extensive and is of the highest possible quality. That the family was able to acquire so many sought-after pieces is evidence that they were a very wealthy family indeed. Unlike the Prado, the collection extends well into the twentieth century, yet there are supreme pieces from the 14th Century as well. Duccio and Rothko only a floor apart. Observations: 1) This has a collection of fauvist paintings as good as any museum I have seen. The Thyssens obviously loved color and there are many paintings from the first decade of the Twentieth Century that are bursting with color. 2) They were prodigious but selective in their acquisition of German Expressionist painters. Some of these tend to be off-putting but not here. Some first rate Schieles. There is a Franz Marc at the center of these paintings that is one of the best paintings in the museum. 3) The collection seems endless. I spent three hours but could have spent two days. You need to just accept the fact that it's OK to walk past a Cranach to see a better Memling. Or recognize that while you could spend an hour in the room with Dutch Golden Age still lives, it's OK to just let the lemon peels and tulips hit you sensuously as you walk by. An extremely extensive collection of Dutch and Netherlandish gems. Fantastic 1960's era photorealism. A big-time Hopper. One of the best Sweerts paintings anywhere. Georgia O'Keefe and Rubens. Clyfford Still and Fra Angelico. Carpaccio and Caravaggio. Amazing variety and volume. This museum is right across the street from the Prado but is much less crowded. The Prado is truly unique and a great museum, but if the Thyssen was in America, it would rank behind The Met, Philadelphia, and maybe Chicago, but well ahead of every other museum, including MFA Boston, MOMA, the Guggenheim and miles ahead of the Getty, which, as a private museum, is the only other comparable collection. I was amazed. We are glad you enjoyed so much! Lots of recognizable artists and paintings to wow the visitor. If you take the Hop on Hop Off bus one of the stops is the Prado and the Thyssen is steps away. - MPC2of3Atlanta, Georgia187 contributionsIncredible collection of artWe did a guided tour of the Thyssen museum with Fun and Tickets Tour Operator. Highly recommend a guided tour for a more in-depth view and interesting stories about some of the works of art. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. This museum is a gem: the Baron "loaned" part of his personal collection to Spain for 10 years mostly due to his Spanish wife. To be able to see these private works is quite unusual and important. His collection spans from religious art, to European Masters to pop and modern art. There is currently a Lucian Freud exhibit for the brave. Lots of art from so many different artists. Ranging from the very modern 2000 to the very old 1300, so there’s something for everyone. I’m glad we went on the free day!We are glad you enjoyed. Thank you. The free access hours are Monday from 12 to 16h. It can only be visited permanent collection and if there is the exhibition of plant -1, of TBA21, also that exhibition. - FlossyfrillsDidmarton, United Kingdom66 contributionsA lot of bang for your buck! For 13 euros per adult and free for under 18s we thought this was an incredible museum. Van Gogh, Munch, Kandinsky, Mondrian...and many more, plus the temporary exhibition. We were here about 2 hours and bits of that we whizzed through. There's a nice shop and the place felt airy and well curated. We ate in the restaurant and had coffee and sandwiches which were reasonably priced. Well worth the money. We are glad you enjoyed. Get an audioguide, it will upgrade the whole experience, and don't miss any collections, there are big surprises in every room. I used the Paseo del Arte, which did not give any advantage like skip-the-line but it was not so crowded as Prado. I also had lunch in the restaurant where the menu del dia costed 21€, while in the city it ranges at 12-16€. Was it worth? Well, I was hungry.. after 4 and a half hours wandering in the museum. Even if you are not that much in art, it is just an experience to see the quality of this art selection. Very well presented. We spent half a day were totally overwhelmed, so we had to stop. This museum is not as famous at the Prado, but it also houses a formidable collection of well-known artworks, mostly of modern painters such as Picasso, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Max Ernst, Tanguy, Dalí, Mondriaan, and many others. Picture taking is allowed here. There is a ticket for the three art museums in this area, with this museum plus the Prado, and the Reina Sofia museum.

Dont miss the current exhibition of impressionism, really worth it! The temporary exhibition is included in the ticket price. The permanent collection is also very nice- some mix between el Prado and Reina Sofia but as it is less rooms, it is more manageable if you would like to see it all. Just keep in mind they close at 19:00 apparently and they kicked us out of the museum in a not very pleasant manner (-1 star for that!)

What I liked about this museum was that it was not overwhelming in either the size of the collection or the crowds. While the Prado is a magnificent collection it is just overwhelming for the average tourist with limited time to enjoy and one feels they need a college football offensive line to block interference to get close enough to the art works. This museum is till relatively uncrowded, if you go on the right day it is free and has a broad range of significant works representative of the full spectrum of fine art history.

This is magnificent museum, is the only one we were able to visit twice during our one week in Madrid.
Along with the Prado and the Reina Sofia national galleries, the Thyssen completes Madrid’s “Golden Triangle” of art. It is founded on one of the largest collections in the world, which was donated to Spain, adding 1,600 important examples of Italian primitives and English, Dutch and German schools, as well as Impressionists, Expressionists, and European and American paintings from the 20th century.
During our early-march visit, we saw an excellent exhibit, “Rembrandt and Amsterdam portraiture, 1590-1670,” that set the master in the context of his peers. Another exhibit from the collection, “Pioneers. Women Artists of the Russian Avant-Garde,” is like nothing I have ever seen outside of Russia. The Joan Jonas exhibit was ok.
The facilities are modern, full of light, spacious and comfortable. The museum has a fantastic gift/book shop. Recommend you visit the museum’s website for its excellent virtual and thematic tours.

Thankfully there are extraordinarily wealthy individuals who believe that art should be appreciated by the masses. This museum is the result of one family who turned a lifelong passion for collecting art into one of Spain’s best museums. The works flow in chronological order from 13th century Italian, German and Spanish religious works to the late 20th century (abstract/pop art). The collection is a who’s who in the art world - Degas, Renoir, Corot, Rembrandt, Monet, Rubens, Rodin, Dali, Picasso, Lichtenstein, Kandinsky and so many more. I spent almost four hours taking in these incredible works. Although the adjacent Prado and Reina de Sofia museums seem to be on the top of most visitors lists, I think this museum is better in that it is more intimate and is not overwhelming at just under 1,000 works of art.

Interesting collection of paintings in this lovely museum. It’s not so big that you get lost or that your back begins to ache from gazing for so long. Not too busy that you have to queue to see paintings or move over so people can take selfies in front of their favourite.
Relaxed atmosphere here and time to enjoy what there is.

At first we were not going to visit this museum, but one of the tourist information staff suggested it was a must see. We did some research and was impressed with the collection, so we signed up for admission as well as the fixed price lunch in the dining room. Needless to say, we were extremely impressed with the collection (especially the Impressionists), and the atmosphere. The lighting on the paintings with the wall color is probably the best we have seen. We also enjoyed the Rembrandt Collection from all over the world.
The lunch in the cafe was delicious and a very good value. The ice cream cake for dessert was exquisite.

I only had time to view the temporary exhibition on impressionism and photography but found everything well organised with English descriptions. The audio information was excellent. I'll definitely return and allow plenty of time for a visit.

The temporary exhibition on “Woman Masters” is open at the time of this writing, and is worth the price of admission, even if you see nothing else of the permanent collection. Reservations are required for the special exhibit (and they do fill up). Recommend getting the 5€ audioguide to deepen the experience.
Note that I do not speak Spanish, so perhaps some of the nuance is cultural or lost in translation. However, worth noting that not all of the language used in the English written and spoken descriptions aligns with what I would consider affirming. However, the collection itself is really excellent.

The Impressionist and Photography gallery (together) was a unique experience. Photographs from the 18th century sat along side of impressionists works. The pictures showed accurate renditions of conditions at that time. Those pictures lacked what the artists brought forth - color and interpretation. Great gallery.
The museum is a must see and across the street from the Prado.
