Neighborhood: Chamberí
Multi-story residential buildings decorated with ornate balconies line the traditional, quiet, and pretty streets of Chamberí. Humble storefronts and neighborhood taverns are scattered across the lower levels down every block, and here and there, there's a cluster of tables on the sidewalk. It isn't ever crowded, but people are always out, poking into the tiny bakeries, hardware stores, and tobacco shops, or ducking into a bright, unadorned cerveceria to have a coffee or beer by the bar, flip through the paper, and check the sports score. The round Plaza Olavide, where the fairly regular network of streets breaks form, is among the most green and lively spots. Restaurants line its circumference and sought-after outdoor tables fill the center of the plaza, where people relax to the sounds of kids playing and street musicians' tunes.

The Geominero Museum has a wide wealth and diversity of geological, paleontological and mineralogical heritage through the important collections of minerals, rocks and fossils from all Spanish regions and from former colonial territories of Spain, as well as significant world record deposits .
It is not one of the typical museums of a visit in Madrid, as it is more dedicated to specialists in mining or interested in it, but for the curious, the collection of precious stones of exceptional size that they have is worth a visit.
In addition, it currently has a room dedicated to the Spanish National Parks that is very informative and in which you can see and acquire guides for hiking in the parks while enjoying its morphology.
Currently access is limited, you cannot enjoy the collection of fossils that they have on the upper floors, only some in the main room and there are no guided tours that explain mining to the uninitiated

The Museo Geominero - rocks, fossils and minerals - is one of Spain's least well known museums, but it happens to be one of it's most spectacular ones. It is definitely worth a visit, especially if you feel let down, like me, by the much better known Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, which is only 700 metres away. And it's free.

Set in the new city of Madrid, it is easily accessible by bus and metro and, depending on your level of interest in the natural beauty of the subject matter, you could spend well over an hour here.

I have to say that it is the best of its kind that I have visited, including the Natural History Museum in London, with thousands of well presented specimens laid out in traditional display cabinets. It is a throroughly traditional museum whose contents speak for themselves and there are no "interactive" experiences to be enjoyed here; this didn't stop a young school group, who were also there, from having a very enjoyable time.

If rocks, fossils and minerals aren't quite your thing, the museum is worth a visit for its architectural value alone. Set in the centre of the Spanish Institute for Geology and Mining (IGEM), the exhibition space comprises a large rectangular main floor, above which rise three levels of balconied galleries, and which is topped by a spectacular, semi domed stained glass false ceiling, with a variety of ornamental crests. All of the materials are of the finest quality - wooden parquet flooring, ornamental plaster work and cast and wrought iron safety rails on the balconies - and typical of the time (1921-1925).

I took a couple of hundred photos and could have stayed for hours. As both a geologist and an architectural photographer, I am undoubtedly biased, but the Spanish are passionate about their geological and mining heritage and, at Museo Geominero, this clearly shows. Go and take a look for yourselves - I'll certainly be going back there again.

This is a rather large museum showing rocks, minerals, and fossils from around the world. The best part is that this museum is free and the worst part is no information provided in English. Only worth going if this is something you are interested in.

We went especially to see this museum. They wouldn’t let us in because the museum is part of the university and you need a spanish ID (we are not) to get in or your Passport (we didn’t have it) and they wouldn’t take any other document instead. Bottom line - we stayed outside. this information is not available on the internet and books. That was a sad morning for us ☹️

A fabulous museum in a beautiful building but don't forget your passport! We had to make 2 trips by metro as we didn't know you needed I'D. They have a great display of fossils, minerals, facts and gems in a beautiful old fashioned display but the building itself is spectacular. Don't expect a shop or a coffee or hands on exhibitions.

This museum is not one of the most famous ones in Madrid but if you want to spend a great morning among fossils, minerals and a great deal of knowledge I would aim to this one. The amount of material laid out in 4 floors, all covered with natural light from a huge glass roof. It is also very educative for children as it tells you the origins of minerals and the transformation into everyday uses. Free admision. Go!.

Easily reached by metro to Rios Rosa's, housed in splendid building with stain glass ceilings. And it's free! Seems to be a fave of school groups, there were many students of diff ages there. The displays are only in Spanish but includes country of origin & chemical names. There's many fossils too, with diagrams showing their evolution lines. Pretty neat to walk the tiny spiral staircases between floors too.

A fantastic and ideal place to go with children. An example of the vast Spanish experience in geology and mining, with plans from 1889 that differ little from the current ones. A wide and very well organized collection, by families and by locations.
And it's free.

This is a small gem if I am allowed to make the joke. The museum is a bit massive, plenty of fossils and minerals structered the best they can but not easy to digest by the general public.
Anyways, it is really cool and contained in a cossy building. Just enjoying the building, specially the main room, justifies the visit. It should have been the coolest thing a hundred years ago and you will expect to find someone with a frock coat behind any stand.
Entrance is free and the curator (at least when I went) was very proactive, kind, and helpful.
I learnet a lot, spent over three hours, and enjoyed.

Free entrance.
In the beggining it was looking very poorly, but after passing the doors there were hundreds of minerals on 3floors.
Some of them historical with parts of animals. Some simply beautiful.
Nothing in English but still very enjoyable.
Building from the inside is beautiful. Roof and some of the windows are astounding.
