About
ilCartastorie, the museum at the Banco di Napoli Historical Archives, was created as a way to allow the public access to the enormous patrimony of documents from the ancient Neapolitan public banks. Within these documents are nearly 17 million names, hundreds of thousands of payments, along with detailed reasons for payment which paint a fascinating picture of Naples and all of Southern Italy during the past 450 years, from 1573 to today. ilCartastorie, in a myriad of ways, from multimedia exhibits to creative writing workshops, effectively brings back the voices, the stories and the historical events which have been immortalized in the pages of the large tomes found at the Archives.

I visited with my adult daughter. What an amazing place! So much history and such a thoughtful combination of authentic documents, along with modern technology. We felt privileged to be walked through the museum by 2 young history specialists whose enthusiasm for all things social and cultural is infectious! A real highlight of our stay in Naples. Very thought provoking and impressive. Definitely recommend.

I would never have found this wonderful museum if it hadn't been for the advice of someone who worked there, and when I heard about it, I thought how boring, bank archives, what could be interesting about that...but what a find. Truly unique, very advanced technology, fully surrounding, magical experience. I would recommend especially for folks interested in history. There is a lot of video which helps to bring the history alive. Fantastic experience. Exhibits are in English and Italian.

This was listed in our guidebook and the TripAdvisor reviews were great so we sought this out. We actually walked past it even though we were using gps so search carefully. We walked into an office area where a number of young women were sitting around chatting. In response t our enquiry, one said, “would you like a guide?” When we said yess she quickly jumped up and led us through the amazing interactive museum which tells you just as much about the history of Naples as the work of the bank. Our guide was excellent and the exhibition engaging. While it’s possible to go through this museum without a guide, I’m sure you’ll get more out of it by paying a few more euros for a guide. We were very glad we found this place.

Probably the most under-visited museum in Naples. Fascinating museum. Interactive and in English as well as Italian sheds light on all aspects of Neapolitan history dating from the 1500s. Highly recommended.

I had great time visiting this museum: I found real historical certificates of the bank activity in old times, documenting every and each expense private citizen and social institution faced during their history, was it in order to buy bread for the family or a piece of art like, say, a painting of Caravaggio! A virtual reconstruction with actors and voices of ancient times goes with the real pieces of paper, giving a fresh and vibrant impression to the visitor. I strongly recommend a guided visit of this place: you'll appreciate more deeply all the visit of Naples' monuments that will follow in your trip!

Even though most people ignore the existence of this museum, the Fondazione Banco di Napoli offers an invaluable view on the history of this city. A visit is kindly recommended, particularly because the interactive presentation is available in English.

It has been one of the many hidden gems discovered over this amazing holiday in Napoli. It is the largest collection of financial documents existing in the world and each single paper carries its own story letting you walk back in time, discovering unexpected and unbelievable stories.
The 4th Caravaggio is one of the many.
The museum is brand new and leverages new technologies to carry out a cohesive storytelling along with the documents (80KM of archives!!!).
Not to be missed and make sure to reserve the guided tour, Elisabetta was knowledgeable and kind in explaining not only all the details but also insightful "hidden" stories behind them.

This is a different kind of museum, and we loved it because it used the most modern technology to tell the stories with info that was first discovered in this bank archives. I didn't know that the Neapolitans invented modern banking - but it was amazing to walk through the rooms full of giant accounting books that were more than 500 years old. Great atmosphere, great way to spend an hour learning about the local history. Definitely worth a visit.

Really enjoyable place because of the interactive multimedia display. It achieves to transport you to the times and stories portrayed along the museum. It is small indeed but definitely worth dedicating about an hour or so if you want to break the routine from the usual museums and exhibitions
