If you like historic places, and are looking for an out of the way place, that is less crowded, less touristy, and the with real Southern Italy charm, then Gaeta is the place for you. There are Roman ruins, small museums, and historic old Gaeta. Sperlonga close by also has a museum and Roman ruins and grotto. There are several very affordable, clean and renovate bed and breakfasts, and vacation rentals close to the beach, or with ocean views. Gaeta is a delight discovery. I was there during the Christmas festival of lights, which was a special treat. Wednesday is market day, if you like local open markets. Stenta is the best pastry shop in Gaeta with two locations.

The visit of Gaeta was a wonderful surprise, a beautiful town full of history and with a truly crystal clear sea. It is beautiful to get lost in the medieval area and walk along the marina
The only sore point are the numerous cars and mopeds that run around the center

It is a nice little medieval fort and sea-side town.

When I visited (mid April) almost every restaurant, shop or hotel was closed. So I enjoyed my time (2 days) walking and reading in the shade... I am so happy I had a book with me, otherwise I would definitely feel bored

Gaeta is my hometown so I'm biased, but the more I travel and live abroad, the more I come to appreciate it. Seven different beaches (rocks, pebbles, and fine sand), a touristic port, and a selection of artistic and natural attractions make it definitely worth a visit. Avoid August if at all possible -- May/June and September are warm enough to go to the beach and not as crowded.

OK. It is not drop dead gorgeous in places and the Nato base does dominate parts of it, but it is authentically Italian. We heard almost no Brits around, the shopping is interesting, they have plenty of really good restaurants and the people just seem eager to please. The walk along the port is being rebuilt after storms last year, but the place is alive. We had a great 5 days here.

On our way back to Rome after spending a week in Positano we stopped in Gaeta and were blown away by the beauty of this seaside town. What a little gem! Our driver told us many people from Rome make the hour and a half trek to the beach as it is the nicest one closest to the city. Easy to see why. The beach was sandy and expansive, from our vantage point high above. The town itself was charming and did not have the hustle and bustle of Rome - it was laid-back and lazy. I would love to have had the time to explore it more and have put it on my hit list for a return trip. Check it out!

Best vacay ever!
We stayed a week in Gaeta in the medieval part of town
Eventually you find the stairways that take u down to the city center where there seems to be a permanent carnival. Such s hspoy Place . People are enjoying their lives in Gaeta. Check out the split mountain, rent a boat, scuba, snorkel, have breakfast in one of the hundreds of cafes, walk through the ancient neighborhoods in both sides of town, check out the Weds flea market down by the beach, visit hotel le rocce for a drink or some coffee on their spectacular grounds... u will be welcome as a prince! Hit the beach in Sperlinga or Gaeta Serrapo and have lunch there too. Visit Cicero's villa in Formia and Tiberius' villa in Gaeta. Check out the church of San Francisco for the wonder and views! See the Archdiocese museum in Gaeta (free!), walk around, shop, eat the olives and pizza!!!!! And there's a tiella stAnd too !!!!! And fresh crepe stand ..... it's all fun, extremely fair priced, religious if u want, and active if u want. This is truly Italy ..., we did a day trip to Pompeii that took two hours to get to .... itsvreslly fun to drive there and the exhibit travel guide, free with entrance fee, is in English so u learn a lot. There are tons of guides there too if u want a tour. I downloaded a free tour and did it that way.
Visit Gaeta, Sperlinga, and Formia ... from Formia u can do the two hour ferry to Ponza..... u will have s great vacay I promise ... especially if u have teenagers... there are so many unusual things to see everywhere and the people watching is fantastic. They will love it!

loved the walk from 1 end to the other, its flat, plenty Italian traditions to experience one being fish sold every day fresh from the fishing boats, the back alleys are full of traditional shops and each day offers something different. the town has plenty of shops and there is a local market 1 day per week which again was a great experience.

I fell in love with Gaeta back in October 2010. It is the most gorgeous little town, with the worlds nicest ppl. If you are in Italy, spend a few days in Gaeta, walk around Gaeta Vecchia, go to Il Molo for gelato, Rendezvous for beers and dinner, and Christian Bar for some fun.
When Im there I grab breakfast and I go sit on the waters edge near the Naval base and just let my mind shut off and enjoy the view.
