We visited the Church of San Domenico in Ancona whilst docked in the port for a sunny Sunday in June. We had opted to explore the town on foot and had prepared our own agenda with points of interest to visit.
The church of San Domenico is located in the picturesque Piazza del Plebiscita which we had originally wandered into looking for a coffee shop and a souvenir shop. The church is reached from the Piazza via a ramp flanking either side of the church. The church is quite attractive with its white stone façade and this theme is continued inside and in addition the white washed ceiling is illuminated by high windows making the interior very light and airy. The church has a very shiny marble floor, the overall impression being that the building is well maintained and cared for.
Side chapels containing altars, statues and shrines underline that this is a house of divine worship. It is our custom to light a candle when in a religious house in exchange for a small donation. This facility was available here but only via ‘electric’ candles which is not something we chose to use.

In the centre, a beautiful church with many surprises. Often forgotten by tourist routes. The surroundings are also worth a visit.

It is an elegant and beautiful church. The titian is really worth seeing. Take note that the church doesn't seem to be open unless there is a service

This is an attractive church overlooking and at the head of one of Ancona's main squares called the Piazza Plebiscito. The overall square is a good place to visit as it offers so much more than just the church and the Chiesa di San Domenico forms part of the larger attraction. So it is worth a visit to see the larger picture. We didn't go inside when we visited so cannot comment on the interior but it did fir very well within its locality given the statue of Pope Clement XII in front.
