The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

Theater is smaller than you would think so is intimate. Acoustics are excellent and the staff is friendly and accommodating. Getting tickets take some planning, but well worth it if you are a fan of opera and want to see it at its absolute finest.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 19, 2023
- FTLCruisersWeston, Florida363 contributionsWonderful tour of this historic theaterWe took the official tour of La Scala and it was well worth the cost. We were able to visit the museum - not of great interest to us since we didn't know many of the performers featured there but still interesting. Our guide took us to the royal box (we all got to sit in it), several other smaller boxes, and the stage area where we learned how the mechanics of the stage work. They were setting up for a performance that evening so we could not go into the orchestra pit but were able to see it and also sit in some of the seats in the main part of the theater. Our guide gave us so much information during the tour about the history of the theater and previous owners of the boxes, how they move sets around, recommendations on how to pick the best seat locations if attending a performance. We definitely learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to anyone wanting to visit this beautiful, historic theater.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 9, 2023
- AnthonyNew York City, New York897 contributionsBeautiful TheaterAfter reading about its significance, we decided to drop by to take a look at the theater and its museum even though we did not have time to attend a performance. Before visiting, check their website on whether the theater can be accessed. If there are no events or rehearsals going on, you can walk into several of the boxes giving you a view of the theater. Otherwise, only the museum can be viewed. The museum was alright with artifacts and exhibits. The place did get a bit crowded with what appeared to be numerous school groups.Visited April 2023Traveled with friendsWritten May 27, 2023

On the tour in the theatre, we visited the Toscanini Foyer then we went into one of the third level box for a view of the interior of the theatre. From the theatre, we visited the museum which provided a good history of the theatre and its performers.Visited March 2023Written May 30, 2023

- BnMadvenNew York City, New York583 contributionsSpectacular La ScalaDuring our visit to Milan, as an opera-lover, it was important for me to attend a performance at Teatro La Scala, even as a piece as obscure as 'Andre Chenier' (though we were lucky to have famed tenor Jonas Kaufmann sing the title role). The auditorium is a jewel box of a theatre with a spectacular laced ceiling and gorgeous chandelier. It was also a treat to see the ushers in uniform all in black with a gold chain. The acoustics are fantastic in the auditorium. However, if you are NOT an opera fan, you may not wish to attend a performance. Our seats were the rear seats on the Box level. The front seats of the box are actual chairs and have screens with translations. The rear seats are backless stools, which could be hard seating for a long performance. The views from the back of the box are cut off, so your chances of seeing the complete stage are low. The box can also trap heat with the velvet upholstery with any air conditioning at a minimum. I had wanted to be more dressed up than I was, but the heat in Milan made that difficult. If you want a program, make sure you obtain/purchase before the performance as they can be sold out by intermission. Also the bar line can be quite long at intermission. Getting to attend La Scala was a highlight for me, and I thanked my partner and my sister who attended with me, for their patience in sitting through the performance.Visited May 2023Traveled with familyWritten June 15, 2023
- Austin_parsons3 contributionsAmazing opera experienceVisited for opera Rusulka , this opera house was beautiful. Very basic from the outside but stunning from the inside. I sat in a box on the second floor near the back and had an amazing view / acoustics. I definitely recommend buying the front seats as the back seats are stools . For a 4 hour opera, that could be a long time.Visited June 2023Traveled soloWritten June 22, 2023

If you want to hear opera as it was meant to be this is THE place. Expensive for good seats but worth it. Splurge on yourself, it will be a treat if you are an opera lover.Visited July 2023Written July 12, 2023
- WilliamWillieWilsonNashville, Tennessee1,383 contributionsOne of the greatest music venues in the world!!This is one of the quintessential opera houses of Europe, a place where the world’s best singers have dreamt of singing since 1778! The museum houses all sorts of memorabilia related to the rich history of this beautiful venue. But the best moment of the tour, at least for us, is stepping into one of the boxes overlooking this majestic interior and imagining watching the debut of legends like Paganini or Verdi or Mozart with a packed house of thousands. The only thing better than the tour is actually attending a concert live!Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 24, 2023
- Dan1 contributionBeautiful - worth getting tickets for a show!Originally just planned to take the tour, as the tickets apparently sell out pretty much as soon as they go on sale. But amazingly we were able to get last minute (and decent) tickets to see Macbeth on ticketswap. The place was so beautiful and the singing was wonderful! The only issue was that it did get a little warm inside by the end.Visited June 2023Written August 8, 2023

Teatro alla Scala is an opera house which has an interior and acoustics that is one of the best.
Unfortunately all other aspects of Teatro alla Scala are disappointing and negative.
You do not get a 5 star experience upon arrival just like when you visit a 5 star hotel. Especially since ticket prices for Teatro alla Scala are about 100-200 Euro per person!
It is difficult to identify the building since Teatro alla Scala has a poor exterior. There are no doormen who await you at the entrance. Once inside there are just a few employees who check your tickets and then tell you on which floor your seats are.
From that moment on you are on your own and easily lost. We booked tickets for the balcony or boxes. Once we found the correct floor, there was nobody there to assist us. It took 15 minutes for us to find the correct balcony. Each floor is divided in a East and West side and the balconies on both sides have the same numbers. Obviously this is confusing for visitors. Even worse, the door of our balcony was locked and the door of the cloakroom too. It took another 10 minutes to find an employee to unlock the doors.
If done correctly, visitors should be escorted from each floor to their seats. But it is clearly visible that Teatro all Scala has decided to save on their employee costs.
During the intervals you can visit the foyer if you want to buy something to drink or eat. Don’t spend your money since this is a disappointment. Only food and drinks you will find here are straight from the trollies they use on airlines like for example pre packed sandwiches.
It became obvious that Teatro alla Scala is all about earning money and saving on costs. Even one simple piece of paper that displays the programme costs 10 Euro!
Our advice is to take your time before purchasing tickets and to decide if it is worthwhile spending a lot if money here?

With a great disappointment I have to share the experience with the La Scala customer approach.
I booked premium tickets for the box for March 2020. Due to the COVID-19 situation the performance was cancelled. Understandable.
We have asked for monetary refund as we did not plan visit any sooner. Since that request, a lengthy, extremely unprofessional process (if any) started.
Until this very day (December 2020) I have not received the refund.
I had to send over 40 follow up emails and received exactly 3 responses to resend my request. When I called the customer line, a lady said she is not able to help and simply hung up the phone on me.
As much as I understand the whole situation is difficult, the behavior of such a landmark cultural estate is unprecedented and great shame.
Whoever is responsible for customer care, shall question his position.
Due to this, we do not recommend to purchase any tickets in advance unless you are 100% sure the performance will take place. Otherwise be ready to lose your money.
In our case, to this day, the La Scala holds 500 EUR for performance which never happened and does not respond to our emails to process the refund.

Yes, La Scala is beautiful, and we're glad we got to see an opera there (well, part of an opera). We went in mid September 2021, and the day had been warm, but not hot. We were excited to see what some say is the most beautiful opera house in the world, and we paid top dollar for prime box seats.
However, we immediately noticed that our box was warm, not just a little, but a lot. This was in spite of the fact that they only sold 2 of the normal 4 seats in the box due to Covid (though I wouldn't pay good money for the back 2 seats since visibility is very poor from their perspective). My husband removed his jacket and I wished I had worn a sleeveless dress. We tried to make the best of it, but it was so hot that we were literally starting to drip with sweat (and the required covid mask made it even worse). It was extremely stuffy and unpleasant, especially in such a confined area and while dressed for an opera. At one point, I thought my husband was going to pass out. Therefore, we left after the first act. Before leaving the theater, we stepped onto the orchestra level and noticed that it was also warm, but not as hot as the boxes. This was very disappointing for our long awaited and quite expensive visit to a "world class" opera house.
The facility is beautiful, but if you go during the warmer months, dress for summer, get orchestra seats, bring a fan, and be prepared to perspire.

I booked a ticket in the last minute so it was my own fault, but I was disappointed to find the view was half-restricted when I was taken to my seat, paying over 200 Euro. I was feeling quite uncomfortable in the hard wooden chair in the box of 4 people, on the 2nd floor, for over 3 hours. I was not expecting that kind of seating. However, still, it was worth visiting. Next time, I will book earlier and try to get a better seat.

I had terrible experience last night visiting performance. I have visited opera theaters in Vienna, NY, Saint Petersburg and this was by far worst. I didn’t only felt safe but extremely devalued as customer. Because I had to buy tickets short time in advance (I had tickets for earlier dates but it was forfeited due to change of travel dates) I was only able to purchase galleria seating. We were cramped into tiny seats with no space between groups with people standing over us in poorly vented space. We had to come in through some sort of emergency exit and taken to our seats by elevator so we didn’t even see the theater which is part of the whole experience. We left in intermission and wouldn’t able even to leave through main entrance. Very disappointed

The history of the opera building is spectacular and legendary . The view from inside was amazing and awe inspiring. It is fairly pricey to do so however and while we were there they were testing the lights so there were times you could not see a whole lot. Also the orchestra was practicing and we were told not to record which is understandable. After awhile we were ushered into the museum. All in all for what were able to see and do, personally I don’t think it was worth the cost and time. Enjoy.

One of the most famous Milan' s attractions. Try not to miss it. If you can book your ticket for an opera in advance (a couple of months before you visit Milan, when tickets are affordable). Worth to visit the museum and any of the events organized there.

Spent 300 Euros each for a seat in a box to see The Marriage of Figaro tonight. 600 euros to not be able to see the stage!. Sat on stools in a box and could only see a small fraction of the right hand part stage if I craned my neck. The people behind could not see a thing. It is a disgrace that these seats are sold at all. We regularly visit theatres and. for example in the RSC in Stratford it is clearly stated when the view is restricted and the price is reduced. Furthermore the orchestra was louder than some of the singers and we could hardly hear them. The performance was also lack lustre and tedious. Some of the singers were just awful- sorry. We have visited the ROH many times, The Vienna Opera House, Prague Theatres, and we expected La Scala to be world class - but no. The ROH Covent Garden is a million times better in all ways and would never stage such a weak performance.. Never again to La Scala.

Smart casual is fine. You will see people in business suits and cocktail dresses but we also saw a few hipsters who were more casual. If you are going to a premiere it's a different story, people could be wearing tuxedoes and gowns.
I wore a long dress and my friend wore a dress shirt and dress pants but no tie.
