We visited this church and were amazed at its simple beauty and the story behind it. Photos are not allowed inside but you can sit and enjoy the atmosphere and tour the small building. The art work there is really something special. I would be sure to visit when you are in the area.

This Romanesque basilica (Basilica di San Giuio) was constructed and reconstructed over centuries on San Giulio Island ( Isola di San Giulio), located in Lake Orta in northwestern Italy. This small island is a jewel not often seen by tourists. The basilica is the most famous building on the island, but don't miss the nearby Benedictine monastery. Your trip should include a walk around this picturesque island, Boats to the island leave regularly from Orta, the lake's namesake village. While in Orta, be sure to visit the Sacro Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its 21 chapels dedicated to St. Francis.

The interior of the basilica has magnificent decor. Unfortunately, taking photos is not permitted. The walk around the island is picturesque and takes less than half an hour.

This was a five-minute ferry ride from Orta San Giulio and the experience was nice overall. I enjoyed seeing inside the Basilica and looking around. One disappointing thing, however, is that the walk around the Basilica is supposed to be silent but there were a lot of people completely disregarding this directive and our experience suffered because of it. I was surprised, because they were older people that normally you'd think would respect this but they were loud and ignored this entirely. It's like they thought they were at Disneyland.

Basilica di San Giulio (13th century) on the island many, many frescoes.
Escape the crowds in Orta by a 3 minute water shuttle (4.50 Euros) to the island and take the short stroll on the trail of silence and meditation.
According to tradition, it was the hundredth, and last, church founded by Julius of Novara and his brother Julian, both natives of Aegina in Greece, who dedicated their later years to the evangelization of the area around Lake Orta.
Legend has it that around year 390 the saint reached the island sailing on his cloak, and then freed it from dragons (symbols of paganism); after the defeat of the monsters he built a small church devoted to the Twelve Apostles.
Regardless of the veracity of the legend, the early and rapid spread of the Christian faith is represented here.

Basilica built on an island, no photos allowed inside. The important piece of artwork is the pulpit carved in stone with cravings representing the 4 testaments. There is a crypt below ground holding the relics of St. Gulius. There are some wall murals painted over a period of time. Overall, the church is not the most decorative but a stop by when visiting the island. There is also a cloister on the island with 80 nuns living and working for the church. Besides the nuns, there are 2 inhabitants. The rest of the locals commute to the island to support the tourism trade.

The Isola San Giulio is worth a visit. It’s a 5-10minute boat ride from Orta San Giulio.
A ticket for a ride is 4,50€. Boats are riding every 15 minutes. On the island you will see the beautiful Basilika of San Giulio. His buried Body is still inside. There is a small path of silence around the island where you can see how the people are living there.

This was a lovely experience, the boat ride back and forth to the island gives you a great view of the cathedral and once arrived on the island it is a stone throw to the basilica. It was an interesting visit and although I am not religious, I can appreciate the art and the architecture.
