caught the bus up to the top for wonderful views and a very nice cooling breeze - a change form the oppressive city heat. nice place to sit down for a while and relax. Shame its not looked after a bit better, so much litter, and a lovely statue of santa rosalia sprayed with graffiti - so sad. hard to find any reliable info on the bus, but caught the 812 bus from just off Piazza Don Luigi Sturzo. Info states that they go every 1hr 15mins, but in reality seem to be every 15mins, passed 2 on the way up and saw three leave during our 1 hour visit. 15min stroll back down the road gets you to the church of S. Rosalia and a couple of nice cafes and a few tat stalls. All things considered, a very nice morning out.

Despite that there is a bus nr 812 to the top ( ticket price from bus 1.80, leaves from Politeama once in an hour, and it is about a 30 minute ride ), I strongly recommend you to walk there.
We absolutely loved it !
The views are great, air is fresh, nature is nice and the road is also good ( though bit slippery so watch your shoes )
You don't need any special equipment , just wear comfortable clothes/shoes, take a bottle of water with you and you are ready to go (on the road you will also find some picnic places if you are interested )
To get to Monte Pellegrino, walkers should proceed to the Fiera del Mediterraneo grounds and look for the stepped path that runs all the way to the top of the mountain.

From Palermo centre, we took bus 107 and stopped at the foot of Monte Pellegrino, at the start of Itinerarium Rosaliae: this is a path paved with stones in a regular pattern, or some patches of concrete in places - it is well maintained. Quite a steep path, and a lot of it is in the sunshine. The path goes all the way up. Lots of plants of interest - grasses, fennel, thyme, cacti and their fruits with butterflies on them. Wonderful views of Palermo and its bay. It was a Sunday morning, some people were walking up but not crowded. Strong cyclists were climbing without putting foot to floor! At the end of the path at the top (it took more than 2 hours from the start), the road splits into one that goes down to the Sanctuary of Saint Rosalia, and one road that continues to the top of the mount. Toilets are available near the Sanctuary. From Palermo, the Sanctuary can also be reached by car and by a different bus.

We started this walk about 9:00am on a Sunday morning in July. Friends of ours with teenagers joined in, so we ranged in age from 16-60 all with various fitness levels as well. This walk does require a basic level of fitness, but I think that was more to do with the heat / walk combo. Recommend proper shoes, but even converse etc would be fine, I'd guess (not flipflops!). I think it took us about 1h45 minutes to get up the approximately 4km, but we took lots of breaks for shade, water, snacks and pictures etc. I think we could probably have been done in an hour without the stops! The view before you go up and across to the sancturia /grottos is far superior to the view at the actual sites themselves. You'd miss this if took the bus up! Be aware that the path, like most of Palermo is littered with garbage of all sorts but if you are interested in the view, you might not mind too much. We noticed that many locals were on their way back down the path as we went up and I'd also go earlier if I could do it again (heat wise).

If you have the time (and it is a nice sunny, clear day) then I would recommend you catch the bus 812 to the top of Mount Pellegrino. From our experience though the buses don't run regularly to this location and it was recommended to us that we get off the bus at the top, wander over to the St Rosalia shrine and take pics and then catch the same bus back down the mountain. (It leaves around 10-15 minutes later for the return journey after it has turned round). There is little else on top of the mountain other than souvenir stalls etc you would be hard pressed to kill an hour or two so we were glad we had taken in the views and seen the shrine (which is beautiful) without using up too much of the day. The return tickets are only a couple of pounds each anyway. Enjoy!!!

I took a city bus for 1.3€. It's a nice scenic ride and once you arrive at the top and visit the shrine you can easily take the bus back to town.

Well worth the visit and the best way to do it is to climb the track right up the top. Takes about 1.5 hours and it’s not too difficult. The views of Palermo as you climb up are fantastic and once at the top there is of course Sactuario Rosario- the little cave church which is beautiful. The way down of course takes less time. Allow around 4 to 5 hours - for the climb, coffee at the top, visiting the sanctuary and then the way down. Or you can take bus 812 from Palermo central or Roma Stabile but then you miss the best views. A must do when in Palermo.

We are reasonably experienced walkers, but not expert hikers - we undertook this walk in trainers and with a few bottles of water. It was perfectly manageable, not especially steep, not at all treacherous, and very green and pretty. There are lots of places to pause and it was not a hectic route. We walked from the centre of town into the hillside, which took about an hour - this is not a lovely walk in itself , the usual Sicilian dog mess on the streets and not a scenic neighbourhood particularly- but you could probably get a bus there instead. The walk up to the peak took about an hour also. The chapel at the top dedicated to Rosalie is of obvious interest to the religious. The chapel is cut into the rock with a fascinating roof, but it is decorated quite gaudily and the statues and artworks are not as impressive. The walk up though is bracing and pretty and nice respite from the city.

An interesting trip by public bus to the top of Monte Pellegrino for the scenery on the way up and back - over-looking the city - and visit the Shrine to Saint Rosalia in the cave where she is reputed to have lived and died - she is the patron saint of Palermo ... bus #812 from Via E. Amari - beside the Teatro Politeama Garibaldi - fare is just 1.40 Euro - be aware that the buses run to and fro every 90 minutes.
Definitely an interesting morning's activity.

There is a well marked route from the junction of Via Isaac Rabin and Via Martin Luther King on a paved trail to the Sanitoria di Santa Rosalia. This took us about 1.5 hours and is fairly easy uphill trek with good views over Palermo. At the Sanitoria there are some bars for refreshments etc.
It is possible to walk to near the top of the hill (the very top is fenced off) either by road or by track just beyond the Sanitoria. The app maps.me shows the track, so it is not too difficult to find.
To return we followed a track signposted as Gorgo di Santa Rosalia which leads to Valle del Porco and brings you back to Porco della Favorita. It is not really possible to get lost on this, but it is quite steep and probably not recommended if you suffer from vertigo.

Hello.
I’m visiting Palermo for a week at the end of July. We are 4 adults and we would like to tour Sicily as well and we know the best way to do it is by renting a car for a week. Any suggestions about best companies and car rental prices? Thank you.
Поднимается ли автобус #812 на саму гору Monte Pellegrino. Спасибо

I disabili in sedia a rotelle possono accedere al santuario, arrivando in auto o la strada è preclusa così come l’accesso al santuario? Grazie

Hello, I am visiting Palermo in October and would like to trek up to the Sanctuary of Saint Rosalia, where is the best place to start the trek? I would be starting from Palermo Side of the mountain.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Cris, the best place is from via Martin Luther King (see the map). From there an old road (XVII century) until the Sanctuary of Saint Rosalia. Good trek.

Rispondo con ritardo e me ne scuso: consiglio di percorrere a piedi la vecchia strada seicentesca con belle vedute su Palermo. La via Ercta non è percorribile.
Buna escursione.

It's pretty far, there is a bus driving to the church on top which is a scenic view, too. Use the website Rom2Rio dot c o m to get bus times and stops.
