Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.

- Ramikat351 contributionsunbelievably beautiful facadeThe facade is covered in green and white marble. Cathedral interior is somewhat plain. The crypt is very interesting. Baptistry was under renovation when we visited, but still beautiful. We especially enjoyed hearing the Duomo bells ring. We attended the Latin Mass on Sunday morning, which was very nice.Visited March 2023Written March 18, 2023
- Buzios_PWHayling Island, United Kingdom90 contributionsStunningEverybody who visits Florence will of course visit the iconic cathedral. We spent a long time walking around it just marvelling at the amazing level of detail of the exterior. It is huge (the dome itself is 37000 tons of brick) and the beautiful detail of the facade is just mind-blowing. You can queue to get inside for free, but I have to say that other than being huge the inside is a bit of a disappointment compared to the exterior.Visited March 2023Written March 22, 2023
- PetzenburgGermany3 contributionsDon‘t miss the Santa ReparataVisiting the Duomo is free. Usually a long queue outside. We bought the Ghiberty Pass which gives you access to Duomo museum, the baptistry and the Santa Reparata which are the remains of the former church there and the crypt. Were absolutely impressed with the excavations of the former church and mosaic floors, great experience,Visited March 2023Written March 24, 2023
- perrypickerign108 contributionsThe Duomo Cathedral in Florence is a Must SeeFlorence is my Mother's favorite city and I understand why with all the art and architecture and its rich history. It is also smaller and cleaner than Milan. The Florence Duomo Cathedral is magnificent. Its immense size and all the artwork and carvings that went into the construction can not be adequately explained or captured on film. It is also conveniently located close to the museums. fine food and shopping.Visited March 2023Written April 4, 2023
- NoraatcSudbury, Massachusetts35,558 contributionsThe Duomo and Santa RiparataThe weather was bad: cold, drizzle and fog, but it worked to my advantage: beautiful Santa Maria del Fiore belonged to me. It was so good to return after two years…even bare walls didn’t spoil the atmosphere. Now, after reading Ross King’s “Brunelleschi’s Dome”, I can understand the magnitude of Brunelleschi’s bold solution of the dome construction problems. He was a genius of an architect, an inventor, an engineer… and what not. I bought the Ghiberti’d pass, which includes three sights: Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, Santa Riparata and Battistero (the latter is currently closed till December 18th). The pass is usable over the course of three consecutive days. Santa Riparata is an excavation site, which tells the story of the Duomo’s distant past. Some remarkable mosaics survived the ages and you can see them now.Visited December 2022Traveled soloWritten April 5, 2023
- Kate S64 contributionsFlorence MustThe cathedral is a beautiful green and white marble from the outside, and you can only see inside by doing the duomo climb. It is about 500 stairs and a lot of people were out of breath or needed breaks to make it to the top. But once there, the view was incredible. Definitely worth the hike up. Tickets usually get you into the bell tower, baptistry, and museum as well. But the Duomo itself takes about an hour. 2-3 hours for them all.Visited April 2023Written April 11, 2023

The pea green and soft pink colour scheme are soo unusual, yet work together so well. Worth a visit for the architecture alone. - ShanelleSanta Monica, California2,805 contributionsBest view of the city at the cupolaOne of the best views in the city. You can buy the Bruneschellini Pass online in advance for 30 euros and need to book the stair climb for a specific time, while for the other attractions, you can visit whenever. There’s no lift option. The staircase goes one way and spirals up - it’s not good if you’re afraid of heights or are claustrophobic. There’s a section where you stop inside the Basilica and an outdoor area. There’s no protective railing at the top aside from the fence. There are a few benches on top. They’ll check your pass/ticket and then will go through security.Visited April 2023Traveled with friendsWritten April 29, 2023
- Kenneth EErwin, Tennessee519 contributionsThe outside is amazingThe outside is unbelievable, the inside, a little underwhelming. We waited in line 45 minutes to get into the Duomo, and the views from the line were amazing. Once we got in, it's a gigantic church, but others are more ornate. But it's a must visit. It opens at 1015 and closes at 345. Be prepared to wait in line. We were only inside maybe 20 minutes.Visited May 2023Traveled with familyWritten May 11, 2023

The exterior is better than the interior. I had visited before and never got to stand under the dome yet. Long queues get shorter in the afternoon but you can sit at a pavement cafe and admire the facade with a drink in the shade. Entry to the cathedral is free but there are tickets to the museum, to climb the dome, climb the tower and to visit the terraces, and visit the baptistery all of which add up if you wanted to do them all

When we arrived in Florence we walked past the Duomo on the way to the hotel, it’s fair to say we were amazed, even in the dark.
I think it’s also fair to say it’s more impressive from the outside than than the inside, although the painting on the interior of the dome is stunning.
Entry to the Duomo is free , but be prepared to wait in a long queue, from what I could see the line was shorter after lunch

If you’re a culture vulture/history buff and find yourself in Florence the Duomo is an absolute must. That’s how I felt, I just wish I hadn’t felt that was in August!! I imagine that the queue for the Duomo is pretty long most of the time but In August it was massive! The queue actually snaked around the entire building and tailed off a good 100 feet away. The Duomo was the main reason we went to Florence so I was determined to see it. We waited for two hours. Standing around you had plenty of time to appreciate the beauty and grandeur of the outside of the building. The queue was pretty disorganised though, with restaurant managers having to move the people themselves so people could get to their entrances. No one from the Duomo came out to manage the line of people which I thought they should have to maintain some sort of order.
Now this part is my own fault for not doing my research, the line foot you in the the Duomo but not the Dome. You could go in to the Duomo for free, light a candle and say a prayer. Inside was very serene after the hot wait outside, but there’s not a lot in there. I had thought you could walk freely and then take your turn to climb the steps to the Dome. This is not the case at all! You have to pay extra to climb the Dome and even then you have to book (this was August so you may not have to book to get inside in the other months)
We paid to get in to the museum, at this point I’d waited two hours and I felt like I needed to see something more. The museum was more of a large basement room with a glass walkway built so you could appreciate the different levels of building found underneath the Duomo.
I would go again but next time I wouldn’t go in August and I would book in advance to Climb the dome because that’s what I really wanted to do!

Stunning building, astonishing to walk around and appreciate the sheer scope. However if you want to see anything other than the main entrance area you have to pay for at least if not two tours which seems excessive. If you are not paying don't bother queuing more than 5 minutes as what you can see inside is so limited.

The Cathedral is absolutely beautiful. The que line was very short. We walked through the Cathedral in the morning on our way to Old Bridge and then came back in the afternoon for the museum, tower, dome, and baptistery views. The cost for the museum which includes the tower climb, dome, and baptistery was 18 EUR. They do not have an option to purchase just a segment of those. The crowds inside were small and you could stay as long as you desired.

I definitely really badly wanted to see the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore and was going to make sure we were not going to miss it while in Florence! Very, very glad we didn't. Unlike the other attractions such as the Dome, Duomo Museum and the Baptistry, you can go into the Cathedral free of charge. There is always a huge line, so I recommend getting there early before it opens at 10 AM. However, just seeing the outside is unbelievable- it is so grand and huge you really cannot believe it. All along the exterior there are many lavish decorations and frescos that blow your mind, and it continues inside. Although it is quite empty, the marble floors and paintings up to the inside dome is truly extraordinary to see, even if it means only popping in. In addition, you can get tickets to climb up to the top of the Dome; we didn't do this, however I hear it is very impressive with amazing views of Florence, Cannot get much better.

The main architectural attraction in the amazing city of Florence.Worth buying an 18 euro ticket that gives you access to all the related sites,ie the belfry, the cupola, the battistero and the museum.Entrance to the Duomo itself is free.
The edifice in itself is an architectural marvel. The dome that dominates the city of Florence skyline, by Brunelleschi , is the largest masonry dome in the world. The decoration of all the facades of the duomo , belfry and battistero in colourful Italian marble is exceptional and unique in more ways than one. This must rate as one of the most amazing ecclestiastical edifices areound the world.... a truly not to be missed historical monument.

This cathedral and its square is always crowded with tourists and locals alike. This is home for numerous shopping stores which includes everything and anything right from clothes to jewelry. Watches ranging from few euros too few thousand euros are available here. I suggest if you have time to climb to the top you can enjoy a fantastic view of the whole city of Florence. Highly recommended.

The best view is from the outside of the architecture of the Duomo. The exterior is worth viewing from all sides. You can also visit inside and climb steps to view from inside and get city views.
Suggest get a ticket to skip the lines - entry to the cathedral is free and need a ticket to climb the dome, climb the tower and to visit the terraces, and visit the baptistery all of which add up if you wanted to do them all

I had an amazing day, but the ticket office was lacking a lot of useful information.
The ticket lasts 3 days and covers the church, cathedral, dome roof, crypt, museum and tower.
You need to book a time with a machine in the ticket office to visit the dome roof.
You don't have to book a time for everything else and can go when you like.
The best time for the dome roof is just before sunset.
It is worth it for the views of the city.
There are a lot of steps to climb, maybe don't do the tower and the dome roof conservatively unless your in really good shape.
Information boards are in English and Italian

Could I leave my luggage at the luggage storage a few hours before my ticket time?
I have a booking at the Accademia Gallery at 11am on the day of my visit, and I was planning on buying tickets to the cathedral for 2-3pm. I was hoping I could leave my luggage here as my AirBnB won't let me drop off my bags until 11:30am and luggage storage nearby looks like it'd cost us at least 12 euros.

The cathedral is free! You only need to buy tickets for the Dome. There are 436!!!! steps to the top. There are other places in Florence that can give you the same views. Toward the top of the Dome, the steps are VERY Narrow. Then you have to walk down all of the them. Hope you have good quads.
The statue of David is amazing and was one of my favorite things while in Florence. I used tiqets for all our sites and timed entries. The ticket for the Ufuzzi also included the Prizzi Palace, the Boboli Gardens, and Galileo museum.
I need to drop off luggage before the tour starts. If I arrive five minutes beforehand, is that going to be okay?

If you go into the Cathedral (free) do you look up and see the dome? Or is the only way to see the dome fesco painting to buy the climb ticket? If you have to buy the ticket, can I just not climb and look up? I just can't tell if from inside the free cathedral entrance you can see the inside of the dome, or if they have that blocked off so they can separately sell tickets for that.

You can see the dome and frescos from the floor of the Duomo. You don't have to climb the dome.

Hi All
I am planning a visit to this historic spot in Sept and I have purchased a ticket to climb up to the top of the dome and I was curious if you're allowed to wear shorts? I watched some YT videos and while the folks were climbing I saw a bunch of people in shorts and the reason I am asking is because the website said something along the lines of "Men must have their knees covered and women must have their shoulders covered" I really do not want to have to climb 463 steps in jeans... Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I visited the beginning of may and im sure there were people in shorts. All I can suggest is maybe take a thin sarong with you just in case. Sorry I couldn’t give you a more definitive answer but I hope it helps

Is it possible to climb up as far as the viewing platform for the fresco, then go down? I get claustrophobic so don’t think I would be able to climb right to the top, much as I’d love to!

I’ll answer this myself now I’ve done it! Yes, you can return down at any point but the climb wasn’t too hard and the current one way system means it wasn’t as claustrophobic at the top as I was worried it might be.

I am visiting on Thursday 21st April and I am purchasing the Brunelleschi Pass. I note that the Cathedral is only open 10:15-12:00 (sadly we cannot make it at this time) and my ticket is from 2:15pm.
When visiting Brunelleschi's Dome and/or Giotto's Bell Tower are you still able to see inside the Cathedral?
Also, are the Duomo Terraces accessed when going to the Dome?

Is there a place to rest at all when climbing to the top of the dome or do you have to do all 463 steps at once? I read the stairs are narrow, basically shoulder width wide.

No. In some areas you may stand off to the side and let others pass but the corridors are narrow and there’s two way traffic going up.
