Neighborhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

- blue047348 contributionsSuper relaxing Park/ZooSuch a lovely atmosphere here, it wasn't crazy busy and noisy so we strolled around looking at very chilled and contented animals in a really lovely setting. Easy to get lunch and plenty of tables to choose from. For a few hours away from the busy streets of Amsterdam I would highly recommend a visit.Visited April 2023Written May 6, 2023
- EggManchester, United Kingdom140 contributionsWorth a visitWe’ve been a couple times now to this zoo and it’s a really nice day out. It’s very green and there’s lots to see. My favourite animals were the giraffes and elephants. As you can expect, the drinks and food are really expensive but you can take your own in. Bottles of 500ml Pepsi were €4 and water bottles were €3 ish although you can get tap water for free!Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 13, 2023
- Breanna CMelbourne, Australia5 contributionsGreat for all ages !My fiancé and I went here on a Thursday and loved it! The open spaces and greenery of the zoo were beautiful to see. The staff were also very friendly in pointing out the animals and giving us directions. We loved as well that many of the animals are in large enclosures and are free to roam as much as possible. Would definitely return :)Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 14, 2023

- Kaz6644Maryport, United Kingdom63 contributionsLovely ZooWas looking forward to visiting this place, as we never had time to go last time we visited Amsterdam. I was pleased we got to go this time. We caught a tram because we were unsure how far it would be to walk from our hotel. Got there just as it was opening. Bought a map , which you didn’t really need because everything was signposted to which direction the animals were at. It was a nice sunny day the zoo was a lovely place to visit. All the animals seemed well looked after, had plenty food and water. My favourite was the Elephants I could have watched them all day. Also the butterfly house was amazing. All the staff were friendly. Both me and my husband really enjoyed the time we spent here.Visited July 2023Written July 17, 2023
- Dtappel43 contributionsFun experience! We were surprised the variety of creatures housed at this zoo, and how much we enjoyed it. We brought our children, age 4 and 6, with us. They enjoyed seeing all the animals and the numerous areas for play. We would definitely recommend visiting the zoo.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 31, 2023
- Tom JLondon, United Kingdom1,662 contributionsGood but small city zooWe came to Artis whilst on a trip in Amsterdam. The zoo is relatively small, can walk around it in about 2-3 hours. Some food and drink places were open where you can get cakes hot drinks and some hot food etc. The jaguars were out and about first thing. The elephants had a splash about in their pool which was cool and the viewing area is very good for seeing this. We found it to be a little over priced for what you get. It was €25 online or it’s €27.50 on the gate.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 2, 2023
- toriaevansCardiff, United Kingdom24 contributionsAmazing! This was definitely the highlight of the trip to Amsterdam. The zoo itself is beautiful and kept immaculately. We didn’t realise it was so big - could easily have spent the whole day here. The animals are clearly well looked after and the new lion enclosure will be excellent when finished. If I’m ever back in Amsterdam, will definitely revisit!Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 5, 2023
- SOPHIEEngland, United Kingdom40 contributionsHighlight of Amsterdam!ARTIS was definitely one of the highlights whilst visiting Amsterdam. The zoo, animal enclosures and gardens are beautiful and immaculate. Despite the map looking somewhat small (I recommend getting a map for 2 euros as there are no maps inside the zoo, only signposts), we underestimated how big the zoo was! We spent roughly 6 hours here (we spent an hour just watching the elephants alone!), only taking a half hour stop for lunch. Pricing is 25 euros (approx. £21.50) so considered a standard price in comparison to other zoos (remember, Amsterdam is one of the most expensive cities). Would definitely recommend this zoo.Visited June 2023Written August 6, 2023
- Ireg SdlonyerSpringfield, Massachusetts85 contributionsNice zoo, very well kept and presented, would visit again.Very well presented zoo and very well kept, everything tidy. Plenty of animals to see and place wasn't overly busy so could actually see the animals. Not many staff dotted round the place so could not ask for assistance if you needed it. Another place where you could not pay via cash. Would visit again if in the area as something to do to pass the time.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 11, 2023

Pro’s
Big zoo with a wide variety of animals which will keep you entertained for hours
Wheelchairs easily available free of charge
Pushchairs available too
Several cafes of good and clean standard
Some excellent and unusual animal displays such as insects.
Underwater viewing area for sea lions.
Aims to educate.
Quite interactive, you can enter many enclosures.
Cons
Signage isn’t great. They could have more information displayed.
Animals have mixed quality of enclosures. The butterfly enclosure is amazing, great insect house, the lion enclosure was a tiny rocky area with no space to run. Same for wolves.
I recommend to buy the map if you go or you will miss lots!

The ARTIS zoo is filled with beautiful animals from all over the world and it is so much fun to learn about and see the animals right in front of you. However the cages the animals were in are too small and they don’t have much room to move about. I know this upset my girlfriend who I was there with.

This zoo was nice and quaint, there was lots of animals to see but it was quite loud with outside traffic. We wasn’t given a map on arrival but were told you could buy one, which wasn’t an issue for us but some others may expect it in the price when booking. We got to see wolves which we’d never seen at a zoo before, and the zoo overall I believe should have had a bit more care to it, with the bushes, trees etc! But none the less it was a nice zoo and added to our trip to Amsterdam!

I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the Zoo in Amsterdam - for some reason I expected it to be a lot smaller with less variety. You get close to all the animals & there’s lots of various routes for an easy walk round. Would definitely recommend when visiting Amsterdam.

Everyone should be very aware you will not get a refund if you book tickets online. They say their are exceptions but there aren’t and you can contact them. I visited in July. They said you can contact them to change dates. They didn’t answer the phone and took 3 weeks to reply to any emails. Don’t be fooled get your tickets on the day! With kids your plans always change but there is no flexibility with the zoo if you book tickets online. Be aware and don’t get fooled like me and have to book your tickets twice.

This Zoo is in the City Centre of Amsterdam. Easy walking distance from other attractions. It was quiet on a cold, yet dry January weekend. The animals appear to be well looked after, yet the enclosures seem small compared to British Zoo’s I’ve visited. But you can get really very close to the animals and even walk inside the Wallabies enclosure.

This is a fairly small zoo, but it is well presented. The animals were active when we visited in March, and the exhibits are positioned so that you can get pretty close to the animals. We found the African dogs to be really interesting! There is a nice cafeteria on the property, with varied food items. There is also an aquarium, which has many aquatic exhibits and is worth a visit. You can buy a combo ticket for the zoo and Micropia, the science museum next door, if you'd like to visit both.

The ARTIS royal zoo is brilliant- such a variety of different animals that you could actually see whereas all the animals are inside/ not visible in other zoos. The animals seem very happy and well cared for with wide and interesting enclosures. There are a lot of highlights including the space you could walk through where you could get very close to the monkeys (look out for the Pygmy marmoset it is very cute and about the size of your hand. The sea lions were also nice and very lively. They had prairie dogs and beaver like animals called nutrias. And there was a range of big animals such as giraffes, elephants and loads of monkeys from around the world. They also had a great reptile house, look out for the crocodile!
The zoo had plenty of restaurants and facilities. Even a planetarium where you lie down on bean bags and look at the stars at the top of the domed cinema. Also there is plenty of animal talks too.
Would definitely recommend.

You can buy tickets at the entrance. You can spend as much time as you want here, but go! I love this zoo! Plan for at least 2 hours.

I am visiting Amsterdam in December, is the zoo open during this time? I’m wondering whether it will be too cold to go to a zoo in December. Do tickets need to be booked in advance?
