From Ribeira Beach, the citadel and tower of St Anthony is only a 2-3 minute walk up the gentle slope that overlooks the marina and fishing harbour.
What you see here are the heavy-duty defensive walls that were built between 1410-1415 to guard against attacks. Taking no chances, they continued to fortify the citadel, adding a tower in 1488 and a new fort in 1595.
The Tower of St Anthony was part of a network of defences which together with the Belem Tower was designed to head off any potential invasions. It was interesting to be able to see this after having also been through the tower at Belem and to see how it was part of a much wider system of defence.
In addition to the tower and walls, the citadel has an open, central courtyard with several outdoor sculptures. The royal summer palace also sits within the citadel walls but it is only open at certain times and you can only visit with a guide.

If you are headed out to the walk along the sea coast to see the waves, you will pass by this fort and note this impressive stone walls. You can visit the fort inside, but there is not much to see. Still the fort is impressive as it stands in a very strategic spot.

A 15 Century Tower preserved inside another tower with many secrets to unveil that were discovered only some years ago by a very persistant researcher from Cascais. They even found the solution for a crime unsolved during centuries. It worth the visit and it's free.

We just came across this poorly advertised Fort at the end of the quay in Cascais. Its free and worth a visit not only to get out of the heat.
It was in use by the Navy when an archaeologist got involved and this isn't mentioned on the small brochure but is the subject of a fascinating video which is on a loop in one of the rooms and which you must watch.
I won't spoil the story but it just shows what persistence can uncover.

We had the good fortune to stay at the hotel here once. Great area for exploring with the castle walls and the art district.

Given the importance of Cascais at the mouth of the mighty Tagus, it followed that fortresses and fortifications were constructed to protect from poachers and invaders.

We can see today what has lasted for many centuries, the admirably powerful citadel and this great tower.

This is part of the protection of this town and the entrance to the river estuary leading to Lisbon. A strategic location and a lovely spot especially on a sunny day.

Part of the Fortress that provided protection to this part of the coast, just a pity that you are not able to walk the Fortress walls.

This tower is part of the ancient fortifications in this coastal town, a strategic spot where the River meets the Atlantic. It rises above the yacht harbor and little beach.
