The pillory is on the main street of Obidos towards the castle. You will find him next to the Church of Santa Maria. In 1910 it was declared a national monument. A cylindrical limestone structure, on one side shows a shield with the royal coat of arms. Really lovely. The whole place is picturesque. Definitely worth seeing.

As other reviewers have noted, this monument was given by queen Leonor in 1492 to the local fishermen who had recovered her son's body after he died under mysterious circumstances the year before. Apparently it was later used as a pillory where criminals were bound naked and publicly humiliated for their crimes and often were pelted with various objects by the citizens.

Historically, and as the story goes, this site and monument stands to honor D. Leonor's son, killed in a hunting accident. His body was brought back to Obidos by some fishermen in a fish net and she thanked them by donating the pillory to the town thus the symbol of the net on the pillory itself. It is on the main street through town (on your right) and you cannot miss it! Please stop and pay your respects during your trip!!! Well worth seeing!!!

When visiting the mediaval village of Obidos you'll find this stone in the main street, that's nothing extraordinary but deserves a picture.

This is a small stone located in the middle from the main street also on the right hand side, and in front of the Church, wo is situated on a lower level, most of the tourist are passing by, without even notice this stone with such a history, it is just after you have visited the “Municipal Museum”, after about 25 meters.

A weathered stone post that can easily be overlooked with the Church of St. Mary facing it drawing most of the attention.

This pillory tower is in the town square. You cannot miss it. Like others you will find around Portugal, a religious symbol from times past.

Every town in Portugal seems to have one of these, left over from centuries ago. This one is nicely placed in a major square with historic and religious buildings all around. And it is in great condition. Visit!
