Entry covers admission to their other location, however we were not able to visit that. Admission fee is steep for just this location as it is rather small. Probably only worth it if you are interested in seeing one of the special exhibitions. Nice building and what is on display is well presented. Would like to have seen more from their collection

When we arrived only half of the first floor was open due to renovation, which isn't their problem. However the actual museum is too sparse for comfort and the labelling of individual artworks is terrible - all the labels are in one corner of the room for the whole room, and then you have to play a guessing game of elimination to try and work out what's what. Far too much space given over to a distinctly average local artist.

A good place to escape the snow or rain, but not a place to check out art.

This is the sort of place that makes the ordinary person feel quite stupid - uber modern art that defies any understanding of why it's hanging on a wall. Whilst I was there, there was a large room just filled with black canvas's and another room with what looked to be an old shed in a heap on the floor. A further room was simply showing a Fellini movie on hard rotation - why? The lighting was very bright. And this place is small. Even if it held a few things of interest, you'd be hard pushed to spend more than 30 minutes.

I don't want to sound like a philistine (I'm a keen gallery goer where possible) and appreciate that TripAdvisor is not an Arts review site, but I strongly feel the need to set expectations for other visitors.

Thankfully, I got free entry because a new installation was opening. If not, I'd have been asking for my 80 NOK back.

First let me say that I am happy and even proud that Trondheim, a small university town by US standards, finds the funds and makes the magnificent effort to support culture and the arts of all types in many ways. I believe music and the arts have a vast, intangible value to society and future generations, and in Norway, the citizens seem to "get" this.

The Trondheim Art Museum is a nice little collection of various art highlights from Norway's past up to modern times. I understand that the exhibits change frequently, so perhaps my review based on this one visit is not indicative of their normal standards. But having visited many art exhibits around the world, including some of the best and most reknown, I must rate this museum in fairness on a relative scale. I found it to be.....okay/average.

The building itself is pleasant, appearing to be almost a giant cube in shape, and it is nicely located between the landmark Nidarosdomen (cathedral) and the quaint and excellent cafe Ni Muser ( "9 Muses"... or "9 Mice" depending on your grammar). From the outside it appears quite small for the main art museum, but artwork is nicely packed into a dozen or so salons and halls, and there is a large central gallery for the featured main exhibit.

There were really only five paintings, older works, that caught my attention, including a standing portraiture by Edvard Munch. I liked the focus on local subjects and artists and the landscapes were gorgeous, as they are in real life.

I am not an appreciator of most modern art. If that is your taste, about half the museum is dedicated to this and maybe you will enjoy it more than I did. There were some, IMHO naive, ham-handed "protest" pieces, a room full of things made out of popsicle sticks, an interesting but waaay overlong video serial installation using flat screen monitors, motion detectors, and pipes. Half an hour into it, I lost patience and walked out. If there was a point, I missed it. Finally, there was a "shock" piece by some very angry artist with graphic closeup genitalia, and depictions of violent sexuality. I only wish the artist help and healing (sincerely).

There is the usual bookstore/ gift shoppe, and I believe a coffee bar. The museum staff are excellent by the way. They were friendly, eager to be helpful and almost over-intrusive, volunteering to personally guide us several times and explain each piece.

Overall, I just did not feel we got full value for what we paid for admission. Hehe, maybe if I got the personal docent led tour. It was a good diverting evening, but I don't think I would go again, nor recommend it to visitors unless viewing art is their passion. Even then, I know of several better galleries and installations around town.

There are two buildings on a combined ticket. Both have changing exhibits. The larger one is by the Cathedral and the small one the Gramolna on Innherreds Velen, over the river on the new footbridge, and past the new shops in the North East corner of the city centre. The Gramolna takes about 15 minutes to go round its modern art exhibits so try to see it when you are in that corner of the city.
The larger one takes over an hour to go round and can easily be combined with a visit to the Cathedral complex. The paintings and sculptures when we went were interestingly grouped by subject theme e.g. the moon.
The staff at both were friendly and enjoyed talking about the exhibits. Saying you are retired from work in the UK gets you in half price.

One of the main galleries in Norway which is oriented towards comtemporary art. In 2013 they put on an exhibiton by Elmgreen and Draget who are internationally known artists, Dragset coming from Trondheim.
The museum is situated in the centre of the city with the famous Cathedral and other attractions near by.

Very limited exhibition with works of little interest. Be sure to check out what they are displaying before you buy a ticket.

The city’s art museum is located in the vicinity of Nidaros Cathedral. Two sculptures on the grounds were quite interesting. According to a brochure, the museum has an extensive collection of Norwegian and international art.
