About
The Royal Regalia - the Crown, Sceptre, Orb, Sword of State and Royal Standard - are symbols of royal power. The Norwegian king's crown was commissioned by King Carl XIV Johan for his coronation in 1818. Since then, it has been used at four coronations and has had a prominent place at two benedictions. The regalia were last time used in 1991 during the benediction of King Harald V and Queen Sonja.

The Crown Regalia are housed int the basement - three crowns and assorted add ons, they look nice. Thats it really - if you want to see some crowns and a bit of history then this is for you. It was quiet on Sunday when I went so did get to have a very long look at the assorted finery on show.

Upstairs was housing an art exhibition which wasnt to my tastes.

Took a "combined" ticket which got me in here, the Archbishops museum and the Cathedral for 230kr. And there are no photos allowed in the actual Crown Regalia section.

Trondhein is a must. Easy walking city with the Nidaros Cathedral, Archbishops PalAce, the Bryggen, and the fortress on the hill overlooking the city. Nice restaurants overlooking the Bryggen. Crown Jewels in the basement of a wing of the Archbishops Palace. All worthwhile.

Included in the combo ticket for the Nidaros cathedral, the exhibition is not very big, but quiet informative regarding history of all Norwegian kings. Regalia can be seen on distance in locked room.

I was not impressed that we made the effort to come back the following day (as it is only open for a few hours each day) to find that you cannot actually get into the area with the actual regalia as it is closed off.

They really should have a sign where you buy the tickets explaining this.

Housed in part of the Archbishops Palace, it is suitably atmospheric. Unlike the British Crown Jewels, these are more modest, without huge, expensive stones, but nonetheless impressive. Associated is a view of the monarchy that has lasted a thousand years, and has gone through many changes, including giving up coronations. For a Brit, this has put our own Royal Family into perspective. NOK 100 seems a little steep if a sole visit, but the combination ticket helps here.

If you get a combo ticket, you can visit the Cathedral, Archbishop's museum, and see the Crown Jewels and other regalia. These are the real thing, well worth seeing. The regalia are not only beautiful, but the exhibits also give some of the history associated with them. Worth seeing while you're in the Cathedral area.

The Norwegian crown jewels are nice, but if you have seen the crown jewels of England or Russia, they are somewhat more modest.

We bought the combination ticket think that all three were open, only to discover that we could not get into the room where the Crown Jewels were displayed, they were selling these tickets at half price which made the combined ticket more expensive!

The jewels were in a room locked with a gate and had to be viewed from around 20 ' away. I assume it was due to the recent theft of the Swedish crown jewels in broad daylight. Not worth a special trip at this time.

We did this on the aforementioned combination ticket. See impressive items on display. Sadly the day we went, the jewels room was locked so we could only see them from afar. The display on Norwegian queens was very good though.
