Visited the Sangro River War cemetery and found my uncle easily with the research of the cemetery I found online.
Got the train from Rome to Pescarra and then had a tour guide "Maurizio tour" pick me up from our Hotel take us to cemetery left us at the cemetery for couple of hours and came and picked us up and took us back to Hotel. Excellent tour guide. The cemetery is beautifully kept and to me an very emotional journey but so worth it. I feel at peace now.

I write this,in order to assist anyone thinking of travelling to Sangro River war cemetery.
I flew from Stanstead, London to Pescara. . I had pre booked a Band B in Pescara for a 4 night stint. It is a 38 or number 8 bus to the central station in pescara.,at 1.5 euro. The weather was poor for the first of 3 full days in Pescara. So the weather was good the second day and I got the 12.10 train to Fossacesia Torino do sangro. I got my ticket from a machine at the station that had an english instruction. This is a 37 minute journey at 3.6 euro.each way. This station is quite isolated. I would have got a taxi had one been there. However I was prepared to walk the approx 3 to 4 mile to the cemetery. I had done some sketches of the location prior to leaving uk. So I had a rough idea of location. So generally headed South and after 2 mile you reach the main road, continue South for a few hundred metres along a main road and the cemetery is prominently signposted, going inland at right angle to main road. The few fist few hundred metres are at 10% incline. It then levels off for the last three quarter mile. There are no turns in the route from main road. Try and pick a good weather day. In early May the roadside was awash with wild flowers and was just lovely. As I got to the cemetery there was a small holding with a rough field full of poppies and artichokes ...just so pretty and poigniant. The cemetery is in a beautiful setting and the visit should not be hurried. Take it all in.
My Uncle, Captain Gordon Hinds was from Liverpool . He had been head boy at Quarry Bank school. He died aged 30. His younger sister became Margaret Stewart. (My mum) So this is the first visit from a family member in 75 years, a very emotional moment.. To return I retraced my steps and got the 17 .10 train back Pesacara. There is an early one at 16.10. So it's all very doable. I had been thinking about this trip for a good while and so glad I did it.. Of course you could hire a car Pescara, with sat nav. I,m 62 and reasonably fit, so the walk I g etc not really an issue and it's atmospheric to do it this way.

I visited this cemetery April 2013. It is the most wonderful cemetary, my mother always wanted to come here to visit her brother and place a poppy, unfortunately my mother passed away so we went instead. Now the instructions are a bit lucid on here. You need to go through Chieti so don't go on to Pescara. There are no english speaking people here, take a photo of the cemetary with you. When you get to Di Sangro town ship (it means you have missed the turn off to the cemetary) go to the police station and they can show you. It is sign posted but also easy to miss. The cemetary is on a hill. One of the most beautiful places in the world. A tear or some were shed that day. Sad to leave but happy for the beautiful views our soldiers have.
I recommend you get a rental from Rome with a GPS as you will have trouble getting out of Rome, once you are on your way it is easy as. Don't use the co-ordinates that are on the sight here. But do put in Contrada Sentineele, it will take you straight there. A beautiful drive and you can do it in a day. You won't need to stay anywhere.
Who ever goes, enjoy your visit with your loved ones, you will feel the wairua of all our soldiers who died to help the Italians....as One lovely teacher said to us on that day, "Thankyou for letting your loved one fight for us, it is because of them we have our beautiful country"....We thank the Italians for looking after our loved ones where they not rest. We will never forget them and knowing how well they are looked after puts us at ease.
"He Maumahara matou i a ratou" We will remember them.....

I have visited the cemetery on many occasions and often bring friends here to visit and witness the sacrifice of others for our freedoms.
This year I attended the Remembrance Sunday service given by an officer of the Gurkha Regiment and a ex Para. It was incredibly moving and we will attend again in 2017.
We were able to place crosses with poppies at the graves of unknown soldiers.

Visiting my great uncle's war grave at Sangro River was a moving highlight of our time in Italy. The cemetery is situated overlooking a beautiful valley and the War Graves Commission along with the Italian Government have done an incredible job. The gardens are well kept and lovely and there couldn't be a more beautiful place for our fallen soldiers.

We were really anxious about whether or not we could get to the cemetery easily having read other reviews online. We took onboard Christine R's review and contacted Maurizio Tours (see contact details below) who more than happily arranged to pick us up from the Fossacesia -Torino di Sangro Train Station and for €50 drove us to the cemetery, left us there for an agreed period of time then collected us. He kindly also showed us a nearby church before dropping us off back at the station.

Our journey began in Rome. We had travelled down by bus from here, stayed the night at Pescara in a lovely B&B and then caught a quick inexpensive train to Fossacesia - Torino di Sangro the next day which took approx 20 minutes.

To be honest, we could have stayed in Fossacesia itself and the cemetery is not very far from the train station, a walk uphill if you are able to. This is a stunning part of Italy's coastline and worth coming to explore (Abruzzo region).

Amazingly well kept site whilst being very moving to see the graves of so many who had lost their lives during the last World war.

Omg it’s surreal the graves are kept at their very best thankyou to Italy you done us proud
On research it was very hard to know how to get here where to stay but after reading others I thought fly to pescara then get a train here which was a bad move this time of year nowhere is open there’s no buses no taxis the new station is in the middle of no where with no public transport.
It was 4 km to our hotel we were lucky we rang the hotel they picked us up and gave us a number to someone that would take us to the cemetery.
The hotel siesta I highly recommended and lovely food but if you decide to come out of season I would recommend you stay at pescara and get the train here 40 mins because apart from the cemetery there is nothing to do nothing open not even for a coffee hope this helps

We took my dad here to visit his brothers grave. He died in WW2 and my dad was the first member of his family to be able to pay his respects. Very moving experience but well worth it. The cemetery was immaculate and staff very helpful. Least we forget.

Happened upon a road sign of this cemetery while driving about, but ended up missing it. Later looked up the adress and drove back to find it, best decision of my vacation in Italy.

The boys are buried in a beautiful new moon shape and I've never seen such a well-maintained cemetery. This is an absolute must-see for everyone in the area and I'm very grateful to have been able to pay my respects to these heroes who fought so I could be born a free man. The cemetery is somewhat hard to find, even with GPS, but it's absolutely worth it!
