Historical artistical city walls where people go for a walk, cycling and jogging all day long. No cars are admitted. You can also take your pet here for a stroll.
Le antiche mura della città di Ferrara sono percorse tutti i giorni dai chi vuole passeggiare, correre o semplicemente portare il proprio cane a spasso.

The best thing we did in Ferrara was to hire bikes and ride around the outside of the medieval walls. You can also walk along the top of the walls but I'd recommend riding if you have the time.
Built mostly between 1493 - 1505, there are 9 km of walls. When they built it, they pulled out all stops to protect the city and used every defensive technique available in the 1400s. You can still many of these defences - city gates, solid bastions, large towers, arrowslits and a patrol path along the top. Smaller semi-circular towers were built at intervals along the path for the sentries.
The path is very safe and easy to follow. You ride entirely on shared bike/walking paths (not roads). For the most part, the paths are flat and even with loose gravel (see photos). You can build up a bit of speed if you want. There are no really hilly stretches although there are parts with slight inclines. It is all quite manageable and fun for kids.

TIPS:
• We hired the bikes from the Hotel Annunciata (Piazza Republica) but that’s only because we were nearby. There are several other places which may or may not be better value or have better bikes. This place had a number of regular bikes available. For half a day, we paid €7pp (€5 if you are a guest).
• Take some ID or a passport because you might need to show it to hire a bike
• We joined the bike path by riding across the main piazza and exiting via Corsa Porta Reno
• Wear older clothes. Even on a sunny day, there were some muddy puddles (there were only a couple but somehow I didn't pre-think this and wore white pants which was not a good idea).
• Take a water bottle - there wasn't anywhere to get water.

The first thing that stole our hearts in Ferrara was how the ramparts had been transformed from medieval defences into idyllic gardens and bike paths. We rented a pair, so let me suggest a route.

Take the Via Baluardi, past the 17th century Porta Romana, along Viale Alfonso d'Este, beside the mount of San Giorgi. Continue farther, descending to Via Porta a Mare and then climb beside the tower of San Giovanni, where the most interesting part of the ride begins. Here is a view to take your breath away, of the gardens and the certosa of San Cristofloro. The path rises and falls with passages of flat terraine in between.

But lets go back to the beginning of our arrival. Ferrara presents a proud profile as you approach the city from a distance, etched in the sky, its magnificently preserved encircling wall is your first contact and the beginning of a love affair. Beyond the fortification, its a straight route to the moated fortress of the Este family.

Walking is the preferred mode of seeing the castle walls flanked by its patrician houses. Window shopping seems what everyone is doing at the Merchants Bazaar as well as strolling along the houses in the Via della Volte. Treasures abound but none as intricate as the Palazzo dei Diamanti, so called for the thousands of blocks of marble cut into facets used to create an amazing facade. My favourite is The Palazzo di Ludovico Moro Sforza, a Renaissance masterpiece which houses the archeological museum. My femme's targeted attention was rivetted on the elegant Gothic Duomo.

Exploring leads to ravenous hunger, so we had a speciality ala maison at the Capanna Restaurant at Ponte Vicini, a hostelry nestled among the waterways and canals that offer eel. Once we consummated our "meeting with the eels", we quickly forgot the trouble it took to find the place. Take a wrong turn and a new adventure popes into view.

We cycled. You can hire bikes at many outlets in the city. The width and surface on the top of the walls varies but basically it's wide and smooth. Some of the paths are outside but alongside the walls and these are narrower and can be busy. There are very few sections where you have to peddle uphill and these only occur when you go up and over road crossings. Otherwise it's flat and a very easy ride. But be warned! Keep your map handy because there are some gaps where it's very easy to lose your way. A great way to experience another of the many attractions of this historic gem of a city!

Riding along the wall, with its shade trees and park is a great experience and a must in Ferrara. You can ride most of the way on top of the wall but there are also bike paths around it. There is easy access to the various key sites of the city from the perimeter.

We went to view the wall down Via Quartieri by Porta San Pedro. There was a nice green park with paths on the other side of the wall. There were also benches and a drinking fountain.

I found myself in Ferrara late on a midweek evening, with not much traffic, and by total coincidence my drive home took me past the majority of the length of the walls which were lit up - a stunning sight.

Even better, walk, run or cycle around them. In most areas there seems to be one path on top of, and one below, the walls.

Unlike some other Italian cities (e.g. Verona) the walls have been very well maintained and integrated into the modern city as a place of greenery.

Really cool to be able to not only see the old walls but also walk on top of them. Lots of people watching in the evening.

We visited Ferrara on a Sunday, which was great as it was fairly quiet (unless you want shops which are mostly closed) and had a fantastic cycle ride along the famous old walls of the city. It was an extremely hot day, 38 degrees, and amazingly it was quite cool and breezy cycling along as a large part of the route is shaded by huge trees. We also went off along the track they call "the countryside within the walls" or nuova Terra Viva, which is lovely. We approached the route from the Piazzale della Repubblica, cycled behind the Castello Estense and then rode up the beautiful Corso Ercole I d'Este to reach the walls.

Ferrara is a great place to cycle as it is pretty much traffic-free. My husband and I are 69 and haven't set foot on a pedal for about 10 years, and we just loved it!

Tip: there are only 2 bike hire stores open on Sunday: the Ferrara Store on the Piazzale Repubblica which is open throughout the day till 6pm, and apparently also the one at the Hotel Europa.
