About

We thoroughly enjoyed visiting the site. It is fascinating and unique, with its history spreading across thousand of years. You need to book the tour online but it was very straightforward. Our guide was informative, engaging and fluent in English.

This place is amazing. From the street, just a closed entrance. We googled opening hours, weekends, 5-30 to 8-00pm. Buy tickets from the building,on the right, while facing the entrance. Our guide took us down the stairs, into an amazing place where water was stored, then taken by aqueduct down the mountain to the town, it is beautiful, like an underground cathedral, sitting under th sold town itself. High columns,7 metres high, an awe inspiring place, one of only three in the world, another in Italy and one in Turkey. From first century AD

Fantastic!! It was amazing to go beneath the city and see the amazing work of the Romans. The guide was fantastic translating into English for us. Only €3 to enter. In a lovely district of Formia (some great places to eat afterwards really nearby). In July and August open Tuesday-Sunday from 7pm - don't go by what the website says (as we waited all week and turned up at 4.30pm!)

The great example of Roman technical architecture. You should visit this place, it's ancient and has its special atmosphere. The guide is nice and intelligent girl who answered all our questions. Many thanks for her interesting excursion! Must see place in this region!

It was hard to find this place, but it was worth of. You cannot go there without a guide, but she will tell the history of this place and will answer your questions. Great place if you are fond of history or just searching for memorable places.

Simply amazing walking through the Cisternone Romano, last night here in Formia, Italy. Over 2000 years old and beautifully excavated to show Roman engineering. Really fantastic and the guide was excellent. Strongly recommend putting this on your to do list if you are visiting the area. I recommend getting there a little early and getting your ticket, takes about half an hour and you get a great look into the past

Currently open every day except Monday 7:30-10:30pm this summer and limited times during the year. If you have never seen a city cistern, this is very interesting. At this time, call 349-532-8280 for reservation. There is a 3 euro entry fee. Tours are normally in Italian, so ask when reserving, let them know if you need a translation. I had seen the cistern in Istanbul which is much bigger, but was delighted to find this preserved cistern in Formia, Italy. You can see the water pipes with the maker's stamp that were used during the Roman era.
