Sometimes in southern Italy, churches and Archeological museums can become a little repetitive and even tedious. it's better to spread them out for a fresh eye as much as possible. We didn't expect much in such a setting as it was not especially trumpeted in my various source books, but were pleasantly refreshed by the variety and presentations throughout.
The Museo Storico Archeologico in Lecce is quite large in size, unexpectedly so, with many varying exhibits in a variety of contexts. When we thought we were quite done, we realized there was yet another whole sector we'd almost missed. All in all, it was a most relaxing hour plus with many memorable shots for later recall.
At the time we visited there were probably only ten visitors as the site is also a little beyond the normal walking parameters of tourist Lecce, though not by much. If it were more centrally located, there is no doubt it would have much more compelling flow. It's well worth a stop and the value is through the roof as in no lira at the time of our visit.

A small but beautiful and unique museum in Lecce to understand more about the archeological history of the Salento region in Puglia. The rooms have been nicely furnished with a map and timeline and the objects presented in the showcases show a good chronological overview of the history of the Salento region starting from the prehistory until the Late Medieval times.

I find MUSA a museum very special and well organised. Even though it's a didactical museum, its exhibits and the organisation of every room offer a unique and completed experience to everyone who is interested about the history and archaeology of Salento. Personally as a student of archaeology in Athens I also appreciated the fact that in the first room of the museum you can be informed about the research, the laboratories and the archaeological excavations of the Department.
MUSA is a small but comprehensive museum and i would advice everybody to visit it!!!!

We arrived in Lecce around noon and our apartment wasn't ready so we left our luggage and literally went across the street to visit the Museo Storico Archeologico -Excellent museum of Lecce history, all centered around an owner's horrible home repair nightmare! Truly amazing to see the depth of history and hidden gems he uncovered while trying to repair leaking pipes in order to open a restaurant - lots to see, and very enjoyable!

This is a charming eclectic museum, and we were fortunate to have a great discussion there with the owner's son. There are numerous layers of ruins here, illustrating the incredible history of Lecce. An intriguing and worthwhile visit!

We've not been very lucky with the archeology museums of Puglia. Ostuni's museum was under heavy and chaotic reconstruction. Taranto' museum was closed without any previous announcement and has been so, according to our host, for many years and will remain closed for at least another number of years. So, it was with some reluctance that we paid a visit to Lecce's provincial museum, that hosts the local archeological collection.
But what a pleasant surprise! The old fashioned 19th century building contained a sort of mini Guggenheim museum with sloping ramps instead of stairs offering views of the floors connected. On the floors a wellconserved collection of antiquities can be observed, neatly described, nicely grouped.
Some archeological museum have depressing outlook, all these treasures collecting dust.
This one was alive and kicking and proud to show itself. There were some minuspoints: the text on the labels was mostly Italian only and at some point in the past the museum apparently had received some subsidy for computer animations that were now completely outof order. A challenge for the next future?
