The Riviera del Conero is off the beaten track for most tourists but for those who have the interest and time to explore the more remote natural areas, this is a uniquely beautiful part of Italy.
The coastline stretches over about 20km with small coastal towns and numerous Blue Flag beaches (the European award given to outstanding beaches).
There are many lovely beachside towns along this beautiful coastal strip.
We decided to chose one and drove to Numana where we spent 3 - 4 hours. The highlight of the day was swimming at Spiaggia dei Frate (see separate review).
This was a stunning beach where the white limestone cliffs of Monte Conero dropped right down to meet the Caribbean-coloured waters.
Above the beach, is the Piazza Nuova, a panoramic lookout point with views of Monte Conero. From here you can see a long stretch of the Riviera del Conero coastline.
In hindsight, we could have very easily combined both Numana and Sirolo which are very close together. If I was doing it again, we’d plan to spend time in both towns in the one trip.

If you happen to be in Emilia romagna (Cesenatico,Rimini, Riccione, Cattolica) make sure that you plan at least one day visit to Conero mountain in le Marche area
It is worth seeing for sure. You will notice the difference as only you approach the sea
It is crystal clear and has light blue color like anywhere else
The landscape is also outstanding as you can see the mountain getting into the sea
The beaches are not sandy they are made of small stones but it is ok to walk without shoes - they are not sharp
Of course you will feel better if you have your fit flops with you but if you don't it's not a drama
The water is a bit colder then in the other places of adriatic riviera and its pretty normal due to the fact that there is mountain that is getting into the sea so the depth is also bigger
Be carefull for this because if is much deeper then in the other places
Anyway lifeguards are avaliable on most of the beaches of Numana and SiroLo
If you plan to pend your day on one of the beaches of Sirolo then prepare yourself to go and climb down the path to get to the beach
In Numana beach is accesible directly from the parking level
It is also reccomended to go to 2 sorrelle beach which is the mot beautifull and accessible obly by boat
You can get there from taking SIMBA boat from Numana , its half an hour ride. if you do it in the moning ( reccomended!) you can get there , spend your entire day on this beach amd get back with the last boat at 3 pm to Numana
In urbani beach of Sirolo there is an intresting cave instead - it is also worth seeing
Have fun in Conero you will not regret getting there :)

Numana is nice and perfect for families, but Sirolo is way better and more fascinating in everything. Go to Numana but after go to Sirolo!

We were told that the Conero had some of the best beaches and instead found a greenish, murky water with kerosene floating on top of it. Not just disgusting, disheartening. We were told that a plane having had an emergency at the nearby airport had to dump fuel into the water. Maybe true, maybe an excuse. If you are in the water and cannot see your legs, something is very, very wrong.

Traveled 150kms to catch the Traghettatori ferry from Numana to the Due Sorelle beach on the 28th of May last, to find the ticket office strangely abandoned. No timetable was posted on their office so we asked a nearby boat operator who assured us the ferries should be running. The nearby cafe, however, advised that they were only operating on weekends, despite their website clearly stating that the ferries were scheduled to be run daily (some of the times needed to be confirmed - but the others were guaranteed). An extremely inconsiderate company who behave with utter contempt for their customers. Be warned - their "timetables" are suggestions only and can in no way be trusted. By the way, the beach can no longer be reached on foot as the last section of the track has been closed. If you don't join the throngs in peak season it is extremely difficult to access.

We've been coming here for years, the beaches are amongst some of the very best in the world. The area is in a natural park too. Lovely restaurants right along the coast where you can eat some freshly caught fish (cooked of course 😀). A definite must see. Excellent for hiking.

The beach was really beautiful but it is Rocky and it was full of people so there was not so much space to sit. We had to walk a lot so we can find a small place to sit down and place our belongings.
Other than that the water was clean and nice temperature.

The views from Numana Alta are simply stunning and as Alex F has indicated, Sirolo is very worthwhile too. It is an easy walk there from Numana.
You will be blown away by the views from both these locations. Both have quaint piazzas and great restaurants etc... from which to dine.

we hike around the mountain (trail 1) and down to the beach (trail 2) and it was a perfect day.

trail 1 contains a hotel that also have a bar to have a bear in.
trail 2 leads trough a very steep downhill trail to the gougers beach.
the 2 of them together took us around 7.5 hours including resting time.
