- Roberts69Northampton, United Kingdom18,303 contributionsQuite a stunning driving experience.Previously I have driven up the pass when out with the TVR Car Club, this time I drove down the pass. Both times the experience was pretty cool and the view stunning. Quite a road and great for a petrolhead day out in the Peak District. It was (and can be) very busy though.Visited April 2023Written April 24, 2023
- Yvonne R7 contributionsFabulous ridges, outrageous outcrops, passable PassThis is a great place for a walk, whether you'd prefer to head up the hill on the north side of the pass, or stick to the bottom of the pass itself. The pass is a channel through a fossilised reef, and the limestone rises on either side in towers and ridges. The road itself tends to be busy with traffic, so a quiet weekday off would be the most peaceful time to visit. There are interesting fossils that are easy to spot in the rocks on the path on the northern side. The scrambling and ridge climbing here are out of this world - exposure as good as some of the classic Grade 1 Lake District Edges (e.g Sharp Edge or Striding Edge), but more technically difficult. Several different styles of rock climbing nearby, and ice climbing in season.Visited June 2023Traveled with friendsWritten July 1, 2023
- Wioletta S1 contributionWalk up the south hill of Winnats pass from free parking. We walked from Blue John Cavern through the field then pass the road and walked up on the south part of the pass. The path is narrow and was very windy up there. Then we continued to the end of cliffs and went down on really steap path. There is a rope to hold it but too short and we had to hold to the fence. Not a trail for everyone, some people walked back. Can be even more difficult in a rainy weather. Next we walk to Castleton and then back to the Winnats pass on the path on the right side of the road and finished at same cavern. There is free parking.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 23, 2023

Unfortunately, we couldn't spend much time in the place and had to pass through in the car. Definitely worth visiting if you are in the area. I wish there were car parking spaces on the sides of the road so that travellers could stop for a few minutes to enjoy the views.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 31, 2023

We drove down and tried to take photos whilst on the move, good fun. Parked at the bottom and walked up to the top, taking photos walking in both directions. Some amazing images are possible. It is a steep uphill climb, but if in your abilities, give it a go. You will appreciate the scenery more. Also once at the top you can roam without the disappointment of not finding a parking space. They are usually full fro quite early bu campers or walkers

A must visit if you’re in the area. More than 50 years since I visited Winnats Pass as a child. I remember wanting to climb the steep hills either side. The memories came flooding back. It’s still free to drive through.

This place is really a fantastic one for a day trip with family. If you get the parking then walk up the hill. I assure you will not regret. It is lush green flat at the top. The view from top is serene. Spend your time at the top before climb down. It's worth the time.

Amazing scenery! Absolutely breathtaking, lovely sunny day when we visited so was a lovely place to be. So many lovely walks to go on and a cave or two to explore. I climbed up to Horseshoe Cave which is a small cave you can go inside but are advised not to unless you have the correct equipment and are experienced in these things but lovely road and area for spending a day walking

Such and amazing location with breathtaking views. Location surrounded by a lovely piece of countryside. There is a very steep climb on a path that is not marked by a sign, but it is well worth it once you get to the top.
Take it easy on the way down. Scenery leading down towards Castleton.
Would visit over and over again :o)

BE WARNED! Winnats Pass is very scenic but do not go down it towing your caravan! The signs just have weight limit which we are well under, so had no prior warning as to what we were to find! When we realised, there was no way to get out of the situation by turning round etc, there was no alternative but to carry on adown the VERY steep ravine. There should be a warning!

Winnats Pass is quite local to us so we tend to take it for granted but it really is beautiful to drive through, walk through (for the fitter than me). There are some lovely photographic opportunities and you will definitely not be disappointed.

Hi Alan
I have seen many beautiful pictures of this pass but as yet not found out exactly where the route starts and finishes. We are going upto the peaks this weekend and would love to drive this route, would also like to walk alone it if that is possible?
Thank you inanticipation for your reply
