- Jay BFairhope, Alabama1,050 contributionsWonderful Architecture and a Better StoryThis beautiful cathedral has amazing architectural features inside and out. The tragic story of Barbara makes this place even more special. Take your time as you tour the gorgeous interior and explore the side chapels, as they too have some very special things to share. Take note of the features dedicated to the countless miners who made Kutna Hora the very special place that it was for many years. We had a guided tour and I would highly suggest that if you can make it happen. Try the gift shop. They have some high quality items to commemorate your visit here.Visited October 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten May 3, 2023
- Bianca WLondon, United Kingdom1,088 contributionsBeautiful UNESCO world heritage siteThis cathedral is absolutely gorgeous, and they have a fantastic, lengthy audio tour that is well worth your time, they really go into detail on the beautiful paintings and stained glass windows around the main altar. It's a stunning cathedral, with so much history throughout. If you're making your way to Kutna Hora, don't miss St. Barbara's!Visited July 2023Traveled soloWritten August 9, 2023
- Hugenot408 contributionsHuge and impressiveOf the many churches we visited in Prague, this one is particularly stunning and well worth the journey. It has five naves and stunning buttresses. Also worth climbing the spiral staircase to view the huge organVisited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 19, 2023
- Portpad TravellerMelbourne, Australia168 contributionsWell worth the effort to get there, and takes a full dayThis is an amazing Cathedral with a crazy ancient history. We had been in Prague for two weeks looking at many churches, basilicas and cathedrals, so we were unsure if it was going to be worth the all-day trip including train rides just to see one more. It was. The Cathedral itself is quite incredible, but the history of events over hundreds of years was mind boggling. I am surprised the Cathedral was actually finished; given what happened. Allow plenty of time if you want to read all the information boards. I photographed them all and read them later, but I recommend you read the brochure you get at the ticket office, as you go around. It is really useful. There is mainly coffee and the donut things at the actual cathedral, but if you walk down into the built up area, there are several cafes and restaurants to choose from. There are several buses that go from the train station past the Cathedral, and you pay on the bus. When you come back to the station, it is tricky to ensure you are catching the correct train back to Prague, so allow yourself plenty of time, as it may be the platform on the far side that you need to be on. We wanted to buy tickets but found nowhere to buy them, and there was no ticket inspectors on the train, so it was a free ride for us. By the way, the bone chapel is at Sedlec some distance away, so if you want to do both, and get the last express train back, (before a long wait till the next one), you need to leave Prague early; say about 9:30 am.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 3, 2024

Like a lot of church buidlings, we found the exterior to be of more interest than the interior, still worth a visit inside to see the variety of stained glass windows.

After visiting the Bone Church, I took the local bus to the St. Barbara’s Cathedral which is located at the other end of town, and which is the most spectacular Gothic cathedral in the Czech Republic, with its flying buttresses, the tent-like sailing spires, and the beautiful cliff-top setting. It is a UNESCO world heritage site.
St. Barbara is the patron saint of miners, and many of the interior adornments reflect mining life. The main altar as well as the side altars are gorgeous, mainly black and gold for pillars and cherubs, with bright colours for garments of the personages. There were many items of antiquity and beauty in this cathedral that were a delight to behold.
The ceiling is decorated with miners’ guild coat of arms - very striking. The ancient frescoes are lovely especially the Arrival of the Queen of Sheba.
I spent quite some time in this Cathedral and then I took the public bus to the train station to return to Prague.

This edifice is very impressive, on top of a hill and almost in a position of taking into possession the whole city. It's one of the main examples of how rich the city was in the past due to its mining activities as its both size and decoration are imposing. It's definitly "the" place to visit in this small town of Kutna Hora. The entrance to the church, which is refered as cathedral by the locals by the way , is paid as it's the case almost in all churches in Czech Republic.

I thought the cathedral was beautiful. Fantastic stained glass, wall frescoes and a lovely atmosphere. The inside is as impressive as the outside

St. Barbara's Cathedral, the patron saint of the miners, was built in Kutna Hora, a city that has flourished in history thanks to the area's silver mines. But the exploitation of silver mines did not always bring the prosperity hoped for, so this cathedral, begun in 1388, was not completed until 1905 and on a smaller scale than originally designed. Around the 1600s the Cathedral was taken over by the Order of the Jesuits. Now the Cathedral is a UNESCO heritage monument. We learned all this from our guide during a day trip from Prague.
The Cathedral is an impressive building, both on the outside and inside. The route open to tourists offers the opportunity to admire the organ very close, which is not very common in such places.

We went here as part of a day trip, the grounds and the cathedral are beautiful. The windows are amazing, they are painted rather than lead but they looked great. You can go upstairs and get a view from above.

I can recommend this place for all tourists coming to Czech Republic. It is not just Prague where you can see beautiful gothic churchs! This place has real genius loci.

We are thinking of visiting Kutna Hora on Sunday December 2nd 2018, will everything be open or closed? The reason for asking is that when we went last year in November all the roads were being dug up, all the places to eat were closed and due to the mayhem caused by the roadworks we never saw any of the attractions.

No idea. Suggest you contact the local tourist info centre and ask them. They have a website destinace.kutnahora.cz which gives you means of contact via email, facebook etc.
