The ZOO is located in a colourful valley near the Liberec town centre (cca 2 km). It is the oldest ZOO in the Czech Republic; it was established in the year 1919. Some parts of the ZOO territory are wooded, some free runs stretch to the rocky slopes. In the valley flows a stream. The paths for the visitors enable comfortable walks.
Specialization of the ZOO is breeding of rare and endangered species. The ZOO has a significant merit in preservation of the genetic resources of Somali donkeys, Bearded vulture, and other rare species. The most significant species are: eagles, macaque, chimpanzee, Somali donkey, zebras, northern musk,Chinese takin, Rothschild’s giraffe and Indian tiger in the white form and many others.
