Top ways to experience Prague Castle
The area
Address
Neighborhood: Hradcany & Letna
Your experience in Prague will never be complete if you do not see it from the top. Hillsides, stretched from the west to the north, provide spectacular views of greenish copper cupolas, narrow cobblestone streets, bridges connecting both river banks and green gardens from red-roof tops of centuries-old houses. Prague pulls you into its 1300 year old history. Walking up the hill or stairs to Prague Castle, the historical seat of Czech rulers and the majestic Saint Vitus Cathedral can leave you speechless (and out of breath). Luckily, plenty of terrace cafés overlooking gardens and beautiful parks are available to provide rest and a place to catch your breath again.

Don't miss the turn to see the Golden Lane
I took another group of students to this incredibly large complex of palaces and galleries. Cathedral is one of the most beautiful interiors we have ever seen but the most exciting was the visit to the Golden lane. During my first visit, I missed the turn and later that evening one of my students asked me where was the small house of Franz Kafka and I realized how easy it was to miss it. This time I was careful and expected the turn walking down the hill leaving the castle. Be careful and don't miss the turn to visit Golden Lane where Franz Kafka was writing his books!

    Great views
Prague Castle is worth the uphill walk even if you decide not to queue and pay admission! The views over the city are spectacular. You can enter the grounds free after an airport style security search. We paid to visit the main attractions within and weren’t disappointed. It was a chilly February day when we visited. I imagine it would be lovely in summer.

    Don't miss!
A must see when in Prague. One of the largest castles in Europe, it houses a beautiful cathedral. When we were there an Easter Market was setting up in the square, which was lovely. The views are amazing from up there. We took the steps up, which was a bit strenuous, however, there is also a tram that will bring you up. Don't miss the Golden Lane, which we would have easily missed had someone not mentioned it. It is a lovely lane with little homes and shops.

Prepare to walk . Enjoy the history.
This castle complex is very huge. There is a fountain. Some gardens open others are closed. Areas need a steep climb to secure better views of the city. Highly recommended when visiting this romantic city.

    Interesting- worth visiting
Interesting visit. Cathedral and castle are in one complex , you’ll need to go through metal detectors and have bags searched before entering this area. There was a bit of a queue for this so take into consideration. You can buy a ticket 250ckz per adult and this gives you access to the castle itself , the cathedral and some other notable buildings. You can wander round this area without a ticket but you can’t go in any of the buildings without it. We spent half a day looking at everything here. Worth a visit - but very steep !

    Amazing
Prague Castle is without a shadow of a doubt the number one tourist attraction in Prague ,most everyone who takes a holiday to this most beautiful of Bohemian city heads to the castle complex ,it is after all the largest castle complex in the world . Dating from the 9th century ,this castle complex has been the seat of power for the Kings Of Bohemia ,Holy Roman Emperors and presidents Of Czechoslovakia for centuries . So much to see here ,Old Royal Palace ,St Vitus Cathedral ,St George's Basilica ,Imperial Stables to name but some of the stunning looking buildings here ,there's statues,an obelisk ,beautiful garden and historic streets such as Golden Lane ,Radnicke Schody and Zamecke Schody ,it's just a great castle complex to enjoy ,my twin brother Stephen and I were here over the Christmas period ,snow falling ,it was fun sipping hot wines as the snow fell enjoying Prague Castle Christmas Market and taking in the stunning views of the castle complex ,can't understand the previous review from a Canadian who is so disparaging about people who visit this beautiful district of Prague ( Hradcany ) comparing visitors to flocks of sedated sheep and Prague overrun by drunks ,not the Prague I know and I've been visiting here for 30 years ,there's flocks of people here as this castle is amazing ,if you didn't enjoy you're visit just say so and stop trying to be negative to people who love historic and beautiful aspects of a vibrant city . If you're planning a holiday to Prague it's a site to most definitely check out ,guarantee you'll love it.

    A wonderful experience
The whole castle area is just plain impressive. I have been here in 1989 when Harval was elected president and the square was packed and I have been here on an almost empty palace square on a rainy mornining in April. Always a sight. You don't need to buy entrance to the cathedrals and museums just walking around is nice too.

    Beautiful Architecture & Views
Prague is absolutely gorgeous and the same thing goes for Prague Castle. Situated on the top of a hill, you not only get beautiful architecture but also beautiful views. Definitely go inside the cathedral and take some time walking around the castle grounds because it’s truly beautiful. Next time I would like to take a tour inside the castle.

    Great historical
Great day out. Few things to note: You don’t need a ticket. You can just walk in and see almost everything. If you want to see the torture chambers etc (which were fab!) you need the basic circuit ticket. You can buy this at the castle where they don’t charge for children or seniors. The book ahead websites all charge for these tickets. Toilets are a huge issue. All are chargeable within the castle unless you are lucky and go into one of the cafes and meet someone who has been given the door code by their waiter. Seems crazy to charge for toilets in a visitor attraction. The history of league castle additional ticket was definitely with the 200czk. We enjoyed learning about the history of the area. Need about 2-3 hrs to see it including the gardens. The cathedral was Incredible.

    A magical place
A stunning array of different buildings and history, a magical tour through a myriad of people, beliefs and lives. The walk to the castle allows you to wind up the hill and look across the whole of old Prague… within the walls the cathedral has so many stunning and vibrant stained glass windows all telling different stories. The old Basilica is in complete contrast and felt much simpler and quieter. I loved this place.

Prague castle is absolutely beautiful and in such a cute area! It's really nice to walk around in the winter and has some beautiful views of the city. The information plaques they use aren't very informative as they've used a clear background and white writing, although it looks nice it's not practical because of the lighting and reflectiveness of the information boards so if youre interested in finding out about the castle's history without the hassle a tour guide might be a better idea.

Some rooms were overcrowded as they'd let too many people in at one time which was unpleasant, if there was better management of this it might work better but overall a nice area for half a day out. Also recommend checking out the cafe within the grounds, they serve a very tasty beef goulash if you need to escape from the cold in winter!

This is a must if you're visiting Prague. The buildings are beautiful both inside and out, and it's a perfect half-day dose of culture. The grounds are free to enter and have a wander round (it may look ticketed from afar but these are merely security checkpoints), and there are a variety of reasonably priced tickets that allow you entry to different buildings over the space of two days. Would recommend doing it all at once and spending the rest of your time exploring other parts of the city.

Tip: walk round to the north side to skip long queues - we saw so many people queuing at other entrances and we walked straight in without having to wait!

The castle is situated on the top of a hill so it can get a bit hard to walk but there there are busses that can take you up there. We ended up walking up the old castle stairs. There was a bit a line to get in due to the security station checking bags. After that, you could just head in.
The castle itself is free to get into and wander but you pay entrance fees to the different buildings inside the castle including the St. Vitus Cathedral, the building that is visible when you look towards the castle. You could get tickets by the Cathedral itself. We ended up just walking around the castle area and looking at the buildings, which were all quite nice. There was a Christmas market at the time so we ended up getting lunch there.
It would have been better to get there early to avoid queues if possible. It also gives you plenty of time to look around the castle itself since that area is also quite large.

It is easy to see why this has been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site. The architectural magnificence of the buildings is obvious, as is the rich history of the place. The entrance is free, but to get in to places like the St. Vitus Cathedral, Golden Lane, Old Royal Palace and St. George's Basilica, you have to buy a ticket. The changing of the guard is a sight to see, as is the beautiful panoramic view of the city of Prague from outside the Castle grounds, and inside. To do justice to the place, one needs at least a whole day. Crowds are usually significant in number

Prague Castle is, in fact, a large complex of buildings that is at the moment the place from where the Czech President rules the country's destinies. Being such a vast complex, visiting all of it can mean a lot of time and a significant amount of money for access tickets in all places. We chose the B circuit which, for 250 Czech koruna, allowed us to visit St. Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, Basilica of St. George and Golden Line. We spent here more than half a day admiring architecture, works of art and learning important aspects of the history of the country and its capital city.

We decided to walk to the castle which was an experience in itself. A steep climb up numerous steps requires some energy and stamina but the views afforded of Prague made the effort worthwhile.

Arriving at ten to the hour we caught the changing of the guard which in all honesty wasn’t much of a sight. The more elaborate ceremony is at midday and is worth watching.

Early mornings are usually the best time to visit as the visitor numbers are lower but it’s still busy with numerous tours meandering about.

I would also recommend buying the audio guide otherwise half the site will remain a mystery.

The cathedral is absolutely stunning and we spent a good hour inside as there is so much to see and a lot of history to absorb. Outside of the cathedral there are several smaller churches and government buildings each with its own history.

Included in the tour is the Golden Lane, again steeped in history and giving a real insight into the lives of residents in the past. Unfortunately our desire to visit the gardens was curtailed by a heavy thunderstorm.

Basic tip is that it will take far longer than you think to see everything, allow at least a 3 hours. There are some cafes inside so you can get refreshments and pleasingly they are the same price as outside the grounds.

There are different types of entry tickets which include different parts of the Prague Castle for you to visit. I would say that the castle itself and the cathedral are the main things to visit. The castle is very interesting with a lot of history, authentically medieval objets and the cathedral is simply gorgeous. I personally also loved the roman-style basilica (st. georges' basilica) situated next to the cathedral. The street of small colorful houses depicts different areas and style of living, and include the house of Kafka; definitely a must see!

I recommend walking around the district where the castle is located, it’s gorgeous and full of interesting museums. Besides, the view from up there is pretty nice!

There are many ways to access Prague Castle, most including a large number of stairs, so we chose to catch the 22 tram and got off at Prazsky Hrad and dealt with the stairs on our exit, thus walking down the stairs instead of up them. This stop is at the top of the hill, with no steps to climb and a short walk (3 minutes) to reach security. Depending on the time you arrive will obviously affect how long the queue is. We reached the castle at approximately 11am and a short queue of about 10 people in front of us.

Unlike other reviews, we did not encounter any angry or disgruntled staff and had a pleasant day all round. The castle itself is pretty average compared to other castles around Europe. The best part about the castle are the views that you get over Prague as well as being able to access St Vitus Cathedral (see seperate review) which holds in my opinion some of the best stained glass in Europe.

You can access the castle grounds for free, but I would suggest purchasing any ticket that includes St Vitus Cathedral as it is the best site within the castle grounds.

More a huge walled city complex than a castle the climb up for the view alone is worth it. Entry to the castle complex is free but if you want to go into the various churches and palace rooms you need to purchase a ticket. Various combinations are available, but we went for Route B and paid an additional fee for the audio guide which was well worth it and really brought the place to life even though there was great information boards throughout. We spent virtually the whole day there; there are plenty of options for refreshments too. Amazing place.

Prague Castle is the most important landmark to explore, particularly for those who would like to indulge in Prague’s history and culture. Take the tram no.22 to avoid climbing steep hill and save your energy to walk along the walls of 9th century castle. This complex is the largest castle in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Therefore, it needs a well planning to see all unique parts including St. Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, St. George's Basilica and Golden Lane.
St. Vitus Cathedral is absolutely the most stunning one. It is difficult to get an exterior view due to limited area on the courtyard but once you get inside, the impressive size of the structure is striking. Beautiful stained glass windows are adorable. Looking back at the Rose Window, inscriptions tell the story of creation from the Bible and each petal of the rose represents a day of the week and the parts of the earth created on those days.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t have time to see the Lobkowicz Palace which features world-famous paintings as well as medieval and Renaissance works of art. I wish we would spend less time in the old palace and could see Lobkowicz collection instead.
