The History of the Jews in Bohemia and Moravia, Part 2
This exhibition deals with the history of the Jews in the Bohemian lands from the reforms of Joseph II in the 1780s to the period after the Second World War.
It highlights the gradual advancement toward greater equality and emancipation for Jews in Austria-Hungary, describes the foundation of the Czech-Jewish and Zionist movements, and profiles the most important Jewish entrepreneurs, scientists, writers, musicians and artists (including Franz Kafka, Sigmund Freud and Gustav Mahler). It also deals with the redevelopment of the Prague Jewish Town, Jewish sites of Bohemia and Moravia, and the history of the Jewish Museum in Prague. Special focus is on the Shoah of Jews from Bohemia and Moravia, and the Terezin ghetto.
Synagogue Silver from Bohemia and Moravia
Located on the upper floor, this permanent exhibition features a representative selection of more than 200 of the most valuable silver artefacts from the museum's collections.
Most space is given over to Torah ornaments - shields, pointers, finials and crowns. Also on display are charity boxes, pitcher and basin sets for hand washing, Shabbat spice boxes, Kiddush cups, Hanukkah and Shabbat candles, and charity collection trays.
The Spanish Synagogue is part of the Jewsh museum in Prague.
The Spanish Synagogue is the most recent synagogue in the Prague Jewish Town.
Built in 1868 for the local Reform congregation on the site of the 12th-century Altschul, which was the oldest synagogue in the Prague ghetto.
It was called the Spanish Synagogue for its impressive Moorish interior design, influenced by the famous Alhambra. The building was designed by Josef Niklas and Jan Bělský, the remarkable interior (from 1882–83) by Antonín Baum and Bedřich Münzberger.
František Škroup, the composer of the Czech national anthem, served as organist here in 1836-45.

Neighborhood: Josefov
Josefov houses Prague’s Jewish community. This small neighborhood centered around Široká street is completely surrounded by Staré Město (Old Town). As the former Jewish Ghetto, today all that remains are a few synagogues and the oldest surviving Jewish cemetery in Europe. The narrow streets were once small enough that a person could touch the houses on both sides. You can still feel the dignity and history this neighborhood carries in its legacy as Franz Kafka’s birthplace. Nearby streets are full of kosher restaurants, museums and antique bookstores.

- Klein ICopenhagen Region, Denmark29 contributionsGorgeous synagogue and the highlight of the Prague visitI visited the Prague Jewish Quarter with one of the best guides I have ever experienced in my life Yvonne and her mentor Pavel Batel who took me and my students also to the Terezin Ghetto. Spanish synagogue went through reconstruction and it is an absolute highlight of the Jewish Quarter. You will be standing there and you will be astonished! Do not miss it while in Prague.Thank you for your review and we´ll be pleased to see you again in the museum.Written March 22, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2023Traveled with friendsWritten March 18, 2023

The syngogues are beautiful and it was very powerful to see they are preserved and were not distroyed during the war. Our guide was Yvonne from Jewish Prague Tours and her explantion made the sights come alive. I would highly reccomend taking a guided tour as mny sights of the museum dont have any explention amd without Yvonne we would know what are we looking at.Thank you for your review and we´ll be pleased to see you again in the museum.Written May 28, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 18, 2023

- viscountesslilyCalifornia308 contributionsMust seeThis is a must see on your tourist agenda. There are three options for tickets. The one I purchased was 550 crowns or about $25 to see all the synagogues, the cemetery and the ceremonial hall. When I bought the tickets, the lady tried to sell the audio accompaniment but when I declined because I told her I have the book with me she kind of got upset. I think it’s the persons choice if they wanted to spend the prices for the ticket but I could see the change in her personality when I refused three times the audio that could be played on my phone while touring the synagogues. Overall, it’s worth going into the synagogues.Thank you for your review. Audioguide JMP does not operate, any complaint should be addressed to: info@audioguide.cz. - TriflyerIndia386 contributionsBeautiful place to visitI loved the Spanish Synagague and the museum exhibits there. Very peaceful and calm place. I opted for the 550 CZK ticket covering all synagogues which are valid for Day+1, but the lady at the counter who sold me the tickets never mentioned the synagogues were closed the following day. I could visit only a few on Day 1 and given the following day was a holiday my ticket was not fully utilised. Also I did not find the others as impressive. The lady at the counter also insisted on selling me the audio tour which I declined.Thank you for your review. - Tereza M1 contributionAmazing experienceWe first wanted to do the tour of Jewish Prague by ourselves, no audio guide - just reading the little pieces of texts next to expositions. We had an underwhelming feeling about the experience, as we couldn’t make sense of all the information and ended up just swiftly passing through some of the synagogues and the cemetery. We then decided to give it another try and booked a tour with Yvonne. From the very beginning, her knowledge and enthusiasm for Jewish history in Prague captivated us. She answered all of our questions exhaustively and we ended up prolonging our tour to almost 4 hours. With a Yvonne, though, there was not one moment when we would be bored or overwhelmed. One of the members of our group started feeling a little bit dizzy in the Pinkas Synagogue which serves as the Holocaust memorial - it had a heavy atmosphere and the weather was also quite warm. Yvonne made sure they were okay while continuing the tour in a manner we were comfortable with. I have nothing but good things to say! Can’t wait for our Terezin tour!Thank you for your review and we´ll be pleased to see you again in the museum.Written July 25, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 9, 2023

The various synagogues, galleries and museums we visited with our several venue ticket were all vaguely interesting but presented in rather dated fashion with long worthy descriptions of Jewish life but not particularly engagingly written. The exception was the beautiful Pinkas Synagogue - a moving experience. The Jewish cemetery is remarkable for the way it has grown and for the quantity of graves but it can be quickly visited. If it’s possible I’d stick with just it and the Pinkas.

Our particular ticket seller was extremely pushy and was intent on selling everyone tickets that included the audio guide at double the price. When I explained that we didn't want the audio guide she told us that there was little point us going, so we didn't go in. My wife and other daughter had arrived 5 minutes after us and had the same experience. They were stronger and managed to insist that the lady sell them the tickets that they wanted. The lady just chucked them the tickets in a very rude way. It turned out that once inside you didn't need the audiobook because everything was written up. I'm guessing the ticket office staff must be on commission as I don't understand why anyone would be this rude and pushy.

The synagogue has a beautiful interior and also an exhbition inside about the Jewish life in Prague and how it was affected in the second world war. However, it is very small. On my pictures with wide angle you can see everything. And the problem is that they dont sell tickets only for the synagogue, they have different types of tickets, all combined tickets for other attractions so for me it was not so good because I was just for a very short time in Prague and did not plan to visit the other attractions. Maybe they could change it and also offer single tickets for the visit.

We bought a ticket and audio guide which gave us access to all of the sites but we didn't have time to visit them all. The Spanish synagogue was very beautiful but the most interesting element was the old cemetery and the small synagogue with the names of all the holocaust victims. My audio tour stopped working half way round and the guide I spoke to was unable to help me with it, which was a little disappointing.

Beautiful on the inside with a very interesting museum. We did this as part of a ticket that gives you access to this building, the cemetery and a few other sites in Prague Jewish Town (but NOT the Old-New Synagogue). There is a lot of Jewish history in this area and these sites and museums give you a great glimpse into that. It’s well worth the cost and time to spend a couple of hours to see these places.

Yes, the Synagogue was beautiful, the stories they tell in the exhibition are informative and the pieces they show are interesting.
However.
It took us a long time to think about buying a ticket for entry. The sole reason being that you could not visit the Synagogue separately. You had to buy a ticket for that synagogue and other places in the area. We were only interested in the Spanish Synagogue and the Old Jewish Cemetery but had to buy a ticket for 6 attractions or more.
If you are interested in all the buildings in the Jewish quarter you'll be happy, we're sure, but we weren't.

The synagogue is a beautiful building, with plenty of display boards explaining the context and background. However, my experience was spoiled by witnessing a man being harangued by a member of the staff on reception because he declined to buy the add-on audio guide. He clearly didn't want it, but she did go on at him at length and suggested that it wasn't worth going in if he didn't have it as he wouldn't understand anything. He politely stood his ground but the conversation only ended when he moved away. I didn't feel her behaviour was appropriate for a religious building, and neither for someone dealing with tourists on a daily basis. I bought my ticket from a fair haired young woman who was very nice, as were the rest of the people looking after the building.

I am leaving a review not of the Jewish Museum, which is self-evidently one of the most important and essential in Prague, but of the woman on the ticket desk. I have never in my 60 years encountered such unwarranted, unaccountable, unacceptable rudeness. It is all the more distressing to encounter such dismal behaviour when one arrives here full of emotion and respect for the history which the building holds and represents. I see from other comments this lady is already a legend of rudeness. I see replies from the Museum going back several years. For example this, from 2018:
"Each unfriendly conduct of our employees is a violation of internal regulations. We regret and apologize for them. We welcome specific description unpleasant experience, we could deduce from it concrete conclusions and to prevent its recurrence." And yet NOTHING has changed. Why not? Museum Management, you absolutely must do something about this situation.

Dear visitor,
Thank you for your review, which we take very seriously. The lady to whom your complaint is directed has been working in the Spanish Synagogue box office since August 2021, so they are not the same person.
However, it should be stressed that she is not an employee of the museum, but an employee of the company that leases the space: https://www.prague-judaica-market.com/.
We are very sorry to hear about your experience. We will certainly draw consequences from the situation. Once again, please accept our apologies.

Yes, the Spanish Synagogue is an active synagogue with services on the weekends. You might be able to email them to see if you can attend services. If you are interested as a tourist only, it's probably best to sign up through one of the guide services. I really liked the 100 Spires group- fascinating and you will learn a lot of information!

Does anyone know if the Spanish Synagogue is sill closed for visitors? Their website states that the building would be open in late 2020, but I am sure that information is outdated.
Has anyone been in Prague in the last few months that can confirm this?
