I think this was this was the best place I visited this summer. The entrance ticket was surprisingly cheap compared to other places I visited this year. The castle is not a big one, but is wonderful. It comes through each and every stone, that it was made with passion and love, as the story says. The castle was built by Jenő Bory and he dedicated it to his wife. He was not just an architect but a sculptor as well, while his wife painted. The castle is also an exhibition from their arts, paintings and sculptures. The place is full of things to see and make a photo of: stones and coins built into the walls, rose windows and spiral stairwells each painted with different motives. You can climb up the narrow staircases to the towers and look around from above (I'd highlight, the narrow staircases and very high towers). You can have a nice view of the city and the castle as well.
I was mostly amazed by the gardens in and out of the castle. Lavender bushes, flowers, loads of green and the highly maintained lawn give such a lovely atmosphere you imagine you're in a fairytale.
I think I'll come back again, this place is just wonderful!

An interesting place to visit. Lovely grounds and gardens. An hour is more than enough time to see everything. Interesting sculptures and artwork. Nothing overly impressive so was left a little underwhelmed. Very busy place, and hardly anybody was wearing face masks, and as corridors and stairs are quite narrow, social distancing isn't easily achieved. 1,800 Ft as the entrance ticket seems quite high. They have lots of upkeep i imagine, but seemed a little run-down overall. Pleased I can say I've been I suppose, but wouldn't say it's a must-see.

Surprising location - just a parcel in a suburb. Impressively rising above you and a nice architecture.

The story (building the castle alone over decades during communism) is impressive. The castle itself is nice, it is fairly large with good variety of spaces and views, nice gardens and towers. It is a great individual effort (though obviously no match of truly historic castles and churches and so on that Europe is rich in)

The main problem for me was the stuff besides architecture. There are poems and paintings and sculptures (and other artifacts like bullets and coins etc) everywhere without coherent style or topic or context. I mean these are hung inches apart at the top of the 10-foot wall without lighting or an identifying tag. That may provide some benevolent obscurity to these artifacts as many have highly questionable artistic value. The recurring team are the Bible and the artist’s love to her wife (often mixed together), but I am being generous if I say the line blurs between devotion and sanctimony (or art and kitsch for that matter)

It is absolutely super, the guy, János knows everything avout the caste, about the 4 family who is living there right know. It is clean and nice. You can see he is working a lot and does a great job at the garden and inside as well. A few parking places area belongs to the castle. Check the closing time before entering. I can say 2 hours can be easily spend there. The stories are great, just ask and listen. Amazing view, cool with kids as well. Absolutely recommended. Great area for taking few great photographs.

On every trip to Hungary, we make the effort to visit Bory Var castle in the city of Szekesfehervar. it is not well publicized, which is a shame, because it is well worth visiting.
Bory "Castle" was built primarily by one man (see the write up about him in one of the pictures I've attached) over a period of 40 years. When you see the scope and workmanship of this castle, it becomes all the more amazing that one man, with just a little help from others, built it.
It is a little tough to find as it is smack in the middle of a residential neighborhood. There are a few signs for it, but we still have to drive around the streets looking for it every time we come. Inside the castle are paintings and other artwork done by the builder and his wife. Entrance to the castle costs only a few dollars, and because it isn't well known, you will have it mostly to yourself. There are no "tours" and you can easily spend an hour or so looking at the artwork and marvelling--as you wander around outside--that one man built this.
Unfortunately the care of the gardens seems this time to have deteriorated from past visits. Despite that, however, this place is well worth a visit.

Nice little castle with garden and an inner garden with well, towers with spiral staircases, statues and paintings inside.

A man decided to build a castle for his lady and family and a man built a castle. I just imagine this was the way in the medieval times, too. Very lovely place, quiet and peaceful, with a nice garden and a beautiful view. Not surprisingly, many couple choose the place for their wedding photo shootings.

Practical infos can be found on the very detailed homepage, but solely in Hungarian. If you to call or email them, it might be that a nice but totally incompetent employee is (or is not) responding you, as this happened to me. Ten minute long conversation on how I should rather call them later or just show up. So better to translate their homepage with an online program for the fees and opening hours.

To visit, you can either go by car (the castle stands in the middle of the suburb, so parking is on the streets) or by bus (nr. 26A from the main bus station, nr. 31 and 32 from the main train station, the stop is Bicskei utca for nr. 31, and Vágújhelyi utca for nr. 32 and 26A).

Cash only.

Szekesfehervar alone is a worthwhile city to visit for its own merits but Bory Var is a must if you happen to get there.
For the person who appreciates all sorts of art and relics from days past, this old castle has a lot to offer! Plan on spending at least a good two hours plus there as the site is overwhelming in size and grandeur.

I haver visited Bory Var at least three times since I discovered Hungary and Szekesfehervar and I highly recommend it!

I enjoyed my visit very much, there are lots of routes to take, rooms to see and towers to climb. You have to be prepared: this is not an average (more hundred years old) European castle, it does not have a long history, it was the love project of a single architect in the first half of the 20th century. It is still quite interesting and has a special atmosphere, definitely worth a visit.

Amazing what this guy has done - building a castle from concrete by himself !! Definitely worth a detour.
