- TheLush101Cardiff, United Kingdom2,213 contributionsAmazing amphitheatreWe stopped here as part of a walking tour of the old town. They discovered the site when they were digging to build a new university building. Having said that, they've added some more seats on so that they can use it for shows etc. We didn't actually go in the site as you can see plenty through the gates at the top.Visited September 2022Traveled with friendsWritten March 27, 2023

Behind the centre stage there are some excellent pillar type ruins with statues. There are also great views of the surrounding town and hills.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 21, 2023
- Passenger781967Arlington, Massachusetts2 contributionsMagical venue, amazing performanceWe saw a performance here of the ballet Anna Karenina. The ballet company and orchestra were amazing, but the venue is the real star. Sitting outside watching a performance in the theater with the city as the backdrop was unforgettable.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 22, 2023
- Heather e33 contributionsWorth a trip just for this site. This ruin is very unique and well preserved. The town itself is touristy, I would suggest staying for the day or maybe 2 nights in town. You can walk on original Roman roads here. Admission to the site is 10 lev per person.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 4, 2023
- MissHK2009Hong Kong, China3,914 contributionsThis is the Most Worth-Visiting Place in PlovdivI had a one-day excursion on my own from Sophia by taking the coach from Central Bus Station (on metro line 2) at 8:10am then return ticket at 4:10pm. Each way exactly 2 hrs without traffic jam on my day. So I had plenty of time to explore Plovdiv especially this theatre. It's spectacular and grand, I could sit for an hour there. And of course, many pictures. Other scenic spots in Plovdiv are just so so to me. I found not that easy to reach this theatre, need some uphill walks on uneven cobblestone path and the sign is not too obvious to me. Better buy the bus tickets in advance as the way back to Sophia could be full. Don't mix up the two bus stations in Plovdiv as the other one is only "Serdika" bus station. You have to go to the "Central" bus station to go back to Sophia.Visited February 2024Traveled soloWritten February 28, 2024

Although we could only enjoy the theatre from outside/distance, it is very impressive. The Theatre is better preserved than many Roman theatres we have seen in many countries. It is an excellent example of through and complex archeological work and restoration. One of the special things is that the Theatre is still being used for its original purpose.

We had an amazing time at the Roman theater.
We travelled from Sofia to attend the concert by Portuguese artists Sara Tavares.
The authentic and quite antique stone benches were covered with soft foam that made the sitting experience pleasant. Though, we didn't do much sitting because we prefered to dance!
Can't wait for another concert at the Antique Theater.

Wonderful classical theatre, faithfully restored. Some of the rows of marble seating have not survived through the centuries and are simply grassed over. I think the place would benefit if these rows are recreated using replicas.
Plovdiv Opera uses the amphitheatre as its regular stage in the summer. This may seem very romantic, but it is uncomfortable in the extreme to endure a three-hour opera on a backless stone bench with only a meagre seating cushion for comfort.

The Roman theatre of Philippopolis is one of the world's best-preserved ancient roman theatres. It located in the Old Town, the center part of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The Roman theatre has been constructed around the 1st century AD and can host more then 5000 spectators.
It is a beautiful historical place, where you could still go to a concerts during the summer season. The place acoustics is truly unbelievable and gives an unique experience.

Situated at the top of the Old Town on a steep hill.
The entrance at the top gives you a great panoramic view looking downhill.
The steps down are rather steep and the seating is on stone slabs.
There is a pretty large stage which was being prepared for a concert or play.
There was also a decent small cafe just outside the gate with some seating ideal for a drink afterwards

Plovdiv Roman Theater
During our tours from Bulgaria, to Serbia and Romania we visited Plovdiv. For us it happens to be the most interesting historic city in Bulgaria. Among other places, our guide brough us to the Roman Theater.
No description is needed for this marvel of the engineering and architectural creation build two thousand years ago at about 100 AD. It is the must site to see when visiting Plovdiv.
Good Travels.

Sorry, I don't know, I used my debit card in ATMs to access local currencies all across eastern Europe with no problem. If you do try to use dollars or euros, they may accept them, but you will lose on the exchange rate they use.

Does anyone know if they have disabled access and viewing from this theatre? And how to go about sorting it beforehand if needed. Thank you

I haven't seen a ramp for wheelchairs and in general the access to the place to start with will be very tricky - the old town is mostly laid with cobble stones and on foot it can be tricky, let alone with a helping vehicle. But you can always call the tourist info centre at +359 32 620453 and they should know best.
