Besides the Dzumaya, the city's main mosque, there is another beautiful mosque - also from the mid-15th century - between the old town hill and the river Maritsa. It was closed, when I passed by there, but the outside alone is worth a visit.

The main body has walls, where brick and stone are alternating, while the minaret is pure brickwork, with the bricks forming a chevron pattern, something I don't remember of having ever seen at an other minaret. Next to the mosque is a türbe, a hexagonal mausoleum, maybe of the founder Sahabeddin, apparently a 'Beylerbey', a regional governor.

That the mosque is also called 'Imaret Camii', thus 'charitable soup kitchen mosque', must refer to the fact that this had once been a 'Külliye', a donation in the Ottoman empire by Sultans or other high-ranking officials, which usually included - besides the mosque - a Medresse (a Quran'ic school), a Han (an inn), a Dar al-Shifa (hospital), a Hammam (bath) and an Imaret (soup kitchen for the poor). Of these buildings nothing seems to be left.

Well, impressive mosque in Plovdiv, the second one, little bit hidden, but it worth to go there, even if you are not Muslim. Shame to us, that the call of prayer is banned in this city. Greetings to young guy Mehmed, which is taking care there, bravo.

Dating to the 15th century in the typical red brick fashion, it was built during the Ottoman occupation; it was open and with scaffolding inside but we still rather liked it.

Would not recommend a visit of this mosque. It doesn't fit the vibrant city style. The place is in rather bad condition. There's plenty of activities one can do in a great city like Plovdiv, so I'd suggest that a visit of this place should be at the end of the visitors to-do list.

The mosque is a pleasing shape and has interesting brickwork. The most interesting feature is the minaret with zigzag brickwork. I did not get inside because a service was being conducted.

Didn't manage to get inside, as there was some ceremonial event going on, but the mosque did look intriguing. Worth admiring if you happen to pass by (from the city center towards the river).
