Any ounce of charm this place once might have had has evaporated in 2023. Gorgeous, half-timbered houses are now lined with tourist gauntlets and trinket stands. It feels like a soulless theme park now. Though the cathedral is beautiful, the hordes are everywhere. Santillana del Mar was the worst part of my Cantabrian trip. The main square is the worst of all.

I was lucky toi met in Philippines young couple from Spain and talk with them about my scheduled trip to Northern Spain. They have introduced to me Santillana del Mar , without their information I would never go there. I would miss a real gem of Northern Spain. I was travelling from Bilbao to Oviedo and stopped there for 3 hours. It was sufficient to walk around, look at all stone houses, admire specific atmosphere of this place, enjoy a tasty lunch in one of plenty off small restaurants.
Suggestions: do not come early morning as plenty of buses and tourists run there. Stop first at Castro Urdiales and come here for lunch when half of tourist groups will be already leaving. Leave the car on a parking on right side befor the city centre, 3 hours was 3 €, what is such touristic place was reasonable option.

Tour bus after tour bus pull through here daily. It's charming - somewhat, but the shops are right out of a Renaissance festival.
Once the tourists leave, and the shops close, it's actually pretty nice. Nice restaurants open up with very good good.
Important: most of this city closes in October for the winter!

The church at the top end has a very interesting exterior. It was closed, so we could not go in. During our visit, there were many horses and riders in the square. By the way most of the riders mounted and dismounted, most looked like it was their first time. There are lots of nice photographic views.

We stopped to visit this liitle village on our way to Santander, having read that it was picturesque and representative of an older era of northern Spain. We were not disappointed and proved well worth the stop.
We parked outside the main street entrance and walked inside the village on cobblestone streets filled with shops and restaurants. Plenty of things to buy, plenty of quaint restaurants to stop and relax, while viewing the tourists amble by.

Visited this town on the way to Santander. Well worth a walk around to see the lovely buildings in this town. Park in the nearby car park for 2 Euros for 3 hours.

Quaint old town, very busy, tourist shops everywhere.
The place has a nice feel about it and there's plenty of parking nearby.

There’s no questioning this town is has maintained an attractive collection of old buildings and streets that speak of an affluent period of Spanish history.
But the place has got so busy, with bus loads of tourists and the tat-shops that cater for them, dominating every street and plaza. It felt more like a theme park to medieval Spain, than a place where real people live any more.
The pungent smell of animal dung in the square down by the main church was perhaps the most authentic historical experience in town...

This is a beautiful village/town steeped in medieval history. Fantastic buildings and beautifully kept. But it's just a tourist town full of hotels, restaurants and shops selling the most over priced tacky goods. I felt sad because it is a lovely place but unless the retailers stop trying to rip the tourists off so obviously they will not thrive. When we were there non of the tourists were buying anything ... Who would want to spend good money on over priced tat? Wake up retailers of Santillana and remember that most tourists are quite canny now and don't want to be taken for such an obvious ride.
