About
Castleton is a beautiful village situated in the Hope Valley, in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Surrounded by hillsides and overlooked by Mam Tor (the shivering mountain) and the ancient Peveril Castle, the village is popular for it’s show caves, Blue John stone, history, shops, and walking. Fully refurbished in 2017, it's now the premier visitor centre in the Peak District National Park, with exciting information displays, a dedicated space for the Castleton Historical Society’s museum, expansive retail area, an area for activities, as well as a café serving a selection of local produce.

    Super visitor centre.
Visited with a school group. Great to see how the centre has developed over the years. Staff helpful and friendly even when faced with groups of young children spending their pocket money! Informative on the history of the area and attractive, well stocked shop. Look forward to another visit when I have more opportunity to linger and try the cafe. A real asset for the village.

    Excellent advice and information available
First visit to Castleton and visitor centre extremely helpful in providing information on what to see and walks to take. Also excellent café for a warming drink and cake on a cold rainy day. Nice museum included to give a flavour of the area and history of mining and geology of area. Shop area for souvenirs and outdoor essentials you may have forgotten. This area is dependant on tourism and centres like this are a valuable asset to promote the area. The staff were both friendly and helpful.

    A great centre
What a marvellous place. The staff are very knowledgeable and there is a variety of things to buy plus a very good museum. I bought the green tea hand cream which is gorgeous. We enjoyed a morning coffee and cake. We then hear the news that there is a possibility that this wonderful hub could close. What a terrible idea. The centre is used and enjoyed by so many people. It would be an awful loss to Castleton and the surrounding area.

Excellent base for a day walking around the Hope Valley
Really good visitor centre with an excellent shop and cafe. Provided us with the information (on local walks) we were after, gifts to take away and lunch! Large car park means this is a good base for a day walking in Hope Valley. Spent the day walking through Winnat's Pass, up Mam Tor and on to Lose Hill

    Castleton is a major treat!
Castleton visitor centre is really good. Plenty of help & information to be had. It's a beautiful area and deserves a visitor centre like this. The staff are very friendly and very knowledgeable. Walks, upcoming events, campsites, B&B, how to get to ... I heard all these questions in a single visit! Just a PS ... I've heard mentioned the astounding notion that the local visitor centres might be closed. I'm absolutely sure that would be a terrible decision, extremely short sighted, and very detrimental to tourism. When people have had a good experience they come back! They need to have proper information. Phones aren't always that useful.

    Excellent experience
We stopped over at the Castleton Visitor Centre on 9 July 2023 morning. Other than the loo, we also visited the shop, bought two eco bags and one scarf. The two ladies at the counter were very nice and humorous. We had good shopping experience there.

    Lovely coffee
Lovely coffee break at the visitors centre in Castleton. They are dog friendly which is great. We ordered from the hole in the wall cafe part, but then took our drinks inside. Lots of tables available and a clean location. Would visit again.

    Super place
Visited following a walk in the area, decent size and well set out. Adequate toilets attached as well as a lovely cafe. Large parking area available also which is not free. The visitor centre is stocked with well chosen gifts along with items for the outdoors and very good map and book selection. Lovely friendly staff also who were very welcoming of my tired Border Collie. Stopped in at the Cafe, very nice lunch….

Worst coffee in the world. And they actually smile while taking an inordinate bundle of cash from you. I strongly suspect the regulars, being woolly hatted hikers, misfits and big city marginals, don't even know a good coffee from a bad one.

The Visitor Centre is a huge asset to the village of Castleton, with its welcoming staff, local artist prints, local history books, gift shop and the museum displays which include the mysterious Celtic stone head. The quiche, chips, and salad in the Blueberry Cafe is highly recommended. It would be awful if the centre were to close, and a huge loss to visitors and locals.

My friends and I visited a few days ago and put £6 into the car parking machine which was broken without a sign on to let people know. The machine ate our money so I called the council as their phone number was on the machine and they said that they won’t give our money back which I find extremely unfair and unhelpful. Just be careful if you park here. We tried to warn others but undoubtedly the machine would have taken and not returned other visitors’ cash too. This really put a downer on our Peaks visit.

We're really sorry to hear that the machine wasn't working. We would suggest contacting High Peak Borough Council (who manage the the car park site) for them to investigate.

Good food in the cafe, gluten free options which were double checked with the chef, clean and bright. Attached gift shop was nice, gentleman behind the till gave us tips for a good walk.
Free parking with a blue badge. Only downside the emergency pull cord in the disabled bathroom was tied to the grab rail rendering it out of reach should someone fall, I untied it but staff should be aware the cord needs to hang loose so it can be used if needed.

Castleton is so lucky to have such a marvellous place like the Visitor Centre.
The staff are so friendly and helpful, the museum is a great attraction and very informative. Not everyone is comfortable using mobile phones and computer tablets for info so to be able to speak to another person and to see things first hand is fabulous.

Firstly, the gift shop is lovely. Secondly, as we were walking around we noticed a bookmark with a lovely picture of a village nearby. We googled this and it was only a six minute drive however a very kind lady at the reception overheard and explained that we would not be able to get there by car and that it is a 4-6 hour walk. So, instead she showed us a map and recommended some walking routes and a car park. We had a lovely afternoon!

On a very windy day we called in asking for advice on a low level walk. Rosemary was really helpful and provided us with a great walk. She also gave us advice on bog conditions for another walk we were going to do.

Good visitors centre friendly knowledgeable staff, well stocked map and walking guide section.
We didn’t park as we were staying in castleton.

The centre is under risk of closure. Seems terribly short sited decision by Phil Muligan the new CEO of the Peak District national park. We are walkers but the parks need not be elitist and the communities need all kind visitors to make ends meet.

When we visited out of season the centre was busy and we saw a happy group of school children benefitting from the resources.
places like this are a valuable asset to help the next generation learn to appreciate the outdoors…
