To see the best views (and escape from the maddening crowds) then you need to climb up through Cave Dale. At the bottom is an interesting information board, and then a steady climb up a small rock strewn path leads up to the top and level with the castle. When you reach the top and then head right, and not through the gate, and you will see Peveril Castle. As you walk towards the castle the area at the end facing the castle is the original entrance to it. Where you are standing is actually where a small market was held selling wares to the castle inhabitants. Lovely bit of history and the views down Cave Dale and over Castleton are amazing. Definitely worth the walk up.

Hidden away area of Castleton which maybe a few people have missed on their visit, not realising it is there. It is next to Peveril Castle (although the castle is high up and not accessible from here). It is a valley with several mini caves cut into the rocks where several sheep were taking shelter. It is lovely. It was quite a hot day and, although there wasn’t water running down the valley, it was still a bit muddy in places with several loose rocks and an uphill climb so good footwear is needed. Once you get past the valley part it opens up to fields and there are more sheep/lambs which allow you to get fairly close to them before trotting off. The walk back into Castleton took a while and wasn’t overly obvious at points due to poor sign posts. My daughters enjoyed the beginning part of the walk but got a bit bored and weary towards the latter part, as the day was hot and we weren’t quite sure where we were going for the vast majority of the latter part. It took about 2 1/2 hours to walk in total. You could probably do it quicker if you knew where you were going and you didn’t have to keep stopping like we did because the girls kept wanting to rest!

You can walk out of the village and get away from the crowds that fill Winnats Pass and Mam Tor.
The hidden valley takes you below Peveril Castle, through limestone crags onto grassy hills From there other paths radiate out. You can return the same way, or take a easy path back to the west side of Castleton. Stout shoes recommended.

It's like a little hidden gem. We visited here instead of the usual Mam Tor, and there was no one around. The inital path up was like a mini fall water due tot he rain, but despite the rain it was a lovely walk up and the dog certainly enjoyed running up and down the side of the hills.

A hidden away gem in easy reach of Castleton. A nice walk and amazing scenery, a return visit for us. We then carried on to the top and over to Winnats Pass. We’ll definitely be back!

Approx 2.5 mile loop and Cave Dale section very impressive. Went clockwise but coming down into Castleton can be a bit tricky as grass and stones very slippy. Partner and I went over on the steep bit near the bottom 🤔😳.

The path here starts literally from the village. Signposted so easily found. Immediately you are rewarded with fantastic scenery as you walk through the gorge. The pathway is rocky with shallow water running over it so make sure you wear sensible footwear.
When we reached the first gate at the top we took a walk to the right which had stunning views of the valley and castle. We followed the walk down the grassy fields to end up back in Castleton village. Didn't take long and very beautiful.

Beautiful walk. We walked up Cave Dale and around the top to come back via Speedwell Caves. (5.7 miles) Fantastic views all the way up. You do need decent walking shoes or boots as the path is rocky and had running water on the day we went. Good views of Peveril Castle from below, and then from above. Well worth doing.

We only walked part way along the Cave Dale Walk, you need proper walking boots due to the rocks and muddy patches. Well worth what we did see though with views up to the Peveril Castle.

This is a well hidden but lovely walking spot tucked behind some cottages in Castleton which leads out into an incredible dale with Peveril Castle on one side and steep hills and cliffs on the other, alongside plenty of small caves and wonders to see I'm sure! There is a short walk that can be taken through the Cave Dale which is wonderful for an afternoon stroll or if you don't want to do something too arduous, but I would still recommend walking shoes as the terrain does get a bit steep and slippery in one region where a stream trickles down. Once you reach the top the land opens up so you can see the sights of Mam Tor and all of Derbyshire around you, lovely!
