About
Speedwell Cavern is set at the foot of the spectacular Winnats Pass, high above the village of Castleton. You go down 106 steps and board a boat that takes you through the workings of a 230 year old lead mine. Your guide recounts what it must have been like to carve out these tunnels using only the most primitive hand-tools, and tells you the story of the mine which opens into a huge natural chamber, the Bottomless-Pit Cavern. Speedwell Cavern is open daily throughout the year (except Christmas Day). Tours leave at regular intervals through the day, and last for between 30 minutes and 1 hour. Like most caves in the area it is not suitable if you suffer from Claustrophobia. There is a discounted Joint Ticket available with the nearby Peak Cavern. There is a gift shop on site selling a wide range of souvenirs, minerals, rock and fossils together with jewellery set with the local Blue John Stone. There is a pay & display car park on site (currently £4.00. Cavern visitors get a £2 refund voucher redeemable off ticket purchases). Tickets are transferable with Peak Cavern's car park for those on a Joint Ticket. There is more information on the Cavern's web site.

- YorkshireRose1 contributionOverpriced and not for those who are hard of hearing, even if mild!We went as a family (two kids aged 8 and 10) with grandparents. This was a novelty thing to do but having now done it I would say it is a massively overpriced experience!! You pay for the ticket online which is expensive anyway (£18 an adult, £11 a child!) and then pay a £4.66 booking fee ontop which you don't realise till you come to pay. Plus pay for parking once there (£4.50 for 4 hours. £9 for all day) There really needs to be a family ticket offered and the price should be far far lower for what the experience involves I feel. Its fun to be in a boat and to hear about the miners lives etc. You exprience how it would feel for those adults and children! Our girls enjoyed the gift shop at the end and thought it was ok but weren't raving about the experience 😂 The tunnels are very dark so you really can't see much. There's a cavern at the end which is interesting but not a great deal to it but nice to be able to see a bit more. The main thing that made the experience was the tour guide. He was engaging and funny! However, he did talk incredibly fast so although he was loud, we all struggled to hear everything he said and had to concentrate carefully. They play a video in the cavern at the end to explain about it but it's no where near loud enough...i caught every other word, my daughters only caught bits and their hearing is excellent and my mum who has hearing aids couldn't catch anything! (please add subtitles...this would have solved it for everyone as there is rushing water echoing in the cave!) You need to be very abled bodied to do this experience due to the steps up and down (which they do explain on the website) but you also need to climb in and out of the boat and over the bench seats in the boat. Also, i would not go if you are hard of hearing... Its incredibly difficult to hear the guide and that was the best thing about it!Visited March 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 27, 2023
- halls2121Oldham, United Kingdom40 contributionsJacob deserves a pay rise Jacob deserves more moneyEntertaining and interesting from start to finish. This was very easy to find and was on the way to the bottom of mam tor and winnats pass, which made it even easier to plan during our day. Booked tickets on line for £19 each. The walk underground is quite dark and wet and then the cave isn’t great for people over 6 foot. You are given a pre warning about this, which was good. The guide was excellent (Jacob), he must of given that tour over and and over again but delivered in a very entertaining way so top marks to himVisited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 28, 2023
- Katherine F96 contributionsBrilliant experienceA brilliant experience and definitely recommend We parked up in Castleton and walked up to the cave, its only a short walk. We were early and had a coffee from the kiosk- this I wouldn't recommend as it was nearly £7 for 2 x coffees and a choc bar - the coffees were a full size cup with a thimble size drop of coffee at the bottom. If you want drinks get these in the village first or after The main event - excellent and very interesting. You do need to be physically fit and quite agile as you're navigating steep/wet steps, climbing into and out of the boat (not as easy as it sounds!) and obviously you must be able to cope with dark, enclosed spaces all that said its a great tour and a novelty value of an underground boat trip deep into the cavern recommended.Visited April 2023Written April 5, 2023
- CawthoALondon, United Kingdom19 contributionsFun tourOur tour guide Josh was brilliant really funny and brought the cavern to life. Tour lasts a bit over an hour and you travel in a little boat. It is pricey especially as you have to pay £5.50 to park in the car park in addition. We all enjoyed it though aged 4-75 inclusiveVisited April 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 7, 2023

I hope your Love Island application comes through next year buddy. On a serious note: they say dogs allowed, but don't take your dog down there, they will hate it and you will have to leave the tour early.Visited April 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 9, 2023
- Ruth M2 contributionsA unique experienceWent with my 8 year old son and we thoroughly enjoyed it! Our tour guide Jacob was amazing and needs a pay rise. He was very knowledgeable and had a cracking sense of humor too. We both learned some interesting things about speedwell cavern and would highly recommend going. I would advise waterproof shoes because the middle of the boat had water in it (we had much drier feet when we sat at the front on the return journey!).Visited April 2023Written April 11, 2023

Our tour guide was Alex and he was very knowledgeable on the caves and gave us an answer to every question we asked. It was exciting and historic , we definitely recommend this place to all ages. A must visit if you're in Castleton. Was a great way too end the holiday.Visited April 2023Written April 14, 2023

Complained at the sales desk on the way out but was just told they sometimes use microphones. Why only sometimes? At £20 entrance fee it's very expensive for what it is.Visited May 2023Traveled with friendsWritten May 13, 2023

The history of the tunnel is fascinating and was presented well by our tour guide Callum - who was very funny and knew his stuff too. In fairness, without the humour of the tour guides it would potentially be quite an uninteresting tour, but they made it enjoyable and engaging.Visited May 2023Traveled with friendsWritten May 28, 2023

It's quite surreal hearing about what happened and seeing the conditions that people were forced to work in. Luckily we went at the right time, so it was just my family on the trip making it like our own private tour!!Visited May 2023Written May 28, 2023

Listening to all the hype you'd think you were in for a treat, visiting underground caves and learning a bit about the history of the caverns, you'd be wrong.
This tour is literally a 10 minute boat ride along a very low flooded tunnel wearing a hard hat (you, not the tunnel!) and culminating in a tiny litle cave with absolutely nothing to see other than a high roof and a big hole in the ground. Nothing of any real interest at all which, considering the £17 entry fee EACH is a complete waste of money and time.
The guide was mildly entertaining in his explanations but I'm guessing they make the chat funny more out of embarrassment than pride in the "attraction".
Take into account the parking fee and for two people you're looking at around £40 which, in my humble opinion, is probably £35 overpriced.
Don't waste your time or money unless you have a deep need to see a totally empty and featureless cave.
Normally I'd feel bad about having to leave a negative review but in this case it really needed to be done.

Visited with my 6 yr old son. We parked at the main pay and display car park in castleton and walked back up to speedwell. Nice easy stroll took us about 15 minutes. There is parking adjacent to speedwell for customers. Tickets can be purchased in the shop or you can pay at the gate next door to get in. Cost about £20 for the both of us.
It was a quiet Friday morning and not many people were there so we got lucky and managed to pay on the gate and go straight in for the tour. It’s limited spaces due to the a
amount of people that can fit on a boat so I can see you waiting at busy times or needing to book a time slot in advance. The boat probably fits around 15+ people on approx but 2 boats run so as one sets of in the caverns the other one is returning.
We were down there for about 30-40 minutes. The guide was really friendly and very informative. It’s approx 160 steps to get down to the boat so thats 160 steps back up. Will be returning in the future.

Thank you to Nigel for being our tour guide today!
He made it funny & enjoyable as well as being very informative.
Covid secure as we needed to clean our hands on the way in and wear face masks at all times, with gaps between groups on the boat.
You can use the same car park ticket for both the Peak Cavern & Speedwell Caves car park (£4.50 for 4 hours, but you trade in your voucher for £2 back in the Speedwell shop and it apparently didn't matter if we overran a little).
We were advised to book the Speedwell Cave and Peak Cavern 2 hours apart, so we had an hour's gap between where we walked a little through Cave Dale and to Peveril Castle.

No worth the visit overpriced boat trip with very little information.you spend most of the time in the dark in complete silence as the guide we had didn't seem to know much about the cavern at all!!having paid £16 each plus a booking fee plus £4.50 for the car park it seems to be a production line just trying to extract as much money from you as possible for very little experience it's just not worth it....boats were completely filled up unlike the website says about social distancing etc....vist blue John cavern if you want a great experience and value for money.would not recommend and would not visit again

Amazed to see so many people rate this experience. Three of us paid £51 for a boring half hour ride through a tunnel so tight that you spent half of it with your head on your knees before coming out into a cavern totally devoid of interest. Three iddy biddy stalactites on the roof and the remains of the lead miners ladder do not a powerful or interesting moment make let alone form one of the awe inspiring sights I have become accustomed to see in other British caves I have visited. Dull, dull, dull, dull dull.
Added to this there are 106 steep steps to be negotiated and no-one mentioned these to us when we were purchasing our tickets. Not a problem for us but could well have been for anyone with health problems and should definitely have been mentioned at point of purchase.

After paying to use the charge car park, my 6 year old daughter needed to use the toilet, actually on the car park site. We where told by a jobsworth that she can't use it, even after them taking my money to park 10 feet away from the toilet.
Was told by the jobsworth that the toilet was only to be used by customers paying to enter the cavern!!
This resulted in my daughter having an 'accident'. The jobsworth then told me to walk into the nearest town to use their public toilets. I was surprised he could actually speak, as he was 5 minutes away from having his high viz jacket and clip board rammed down his throat
Advise, take a bottle with you, because once you have paid to use their car park, they don't care one bit about the welfare of customer, especially toddlers.
Will definitely not be visiting again, and an official complaint was put in, in writing, only for the manager to reply that he wasn't concerned and makes no apologies for what happened.
Spoken to others have had similar experiences there, and will post their replies if they try to even debt this.

Once your greeted at the mine entrance your given hard hats and then its down 106 wet and slippery steps to a waiting boat. Speedwell cavern is a old flooded lead mine that never made any money. The tunnels you go down in the boat are very low and tight no good if your claustrophobic. When you get to the half way point the boat takes a little detour to allow the boat coming in the other direction to pass then its back down the tunnel to the cavern at the end. You then disembark the boat while the people who are there then climb into the boat and make their way back. Here your told about the carven your standing in. I was expecting to be taken on foot elsewhere but this is not the case. After about 15 minutes another boat docks the peolpe disembark and then you climb aboard to make your way back. Throughout your boat journeys your told about the lead miners and the struggles they had trying to find the lead. I lost count how many times I banged my head on the ceiling of the tunnel but its part of the fun. Dont be going down the mine in your gucci loafers and white jeans your soon be on your backside.Sensible footware is recommended and as everyone on the return journey has to get on the boat from the front some of the seats will be wet and dirty. Dont forget its also 106 slippery steps back up to the exit. overall it was an enjoyable visit.

Speedwell Cavern is an excellent tourist attraction that is well worth a visit if you're in the local area. The guided tour into these man-made and natural caverns offers a lot of history, and our tour guide Leo was informative and had a great sense of humour.
For those wondering how enclosed the caves are, Speedwell Cavern can get very enclosed at times - it was formerly a mine, after all! If you're even the least bit uncertain about enclosed spaces, I would avoid this cavern, and I would instead consider Peak Cavern down the road, which is much more open in comparison.
Overall, this was a great attraction, and well worth the price, especially if you're considering going to Peak Cavern, also! There is a joint ticket offer that I would recommend taking advantage of.

First visit today and i really enjoyed it. Social distancing was in place and masks had to be worn. The tour starts with a descent down over 100 steps. Be warned these steps are slippy snd uneven, you also have to climb the stairs at the end of the tour to get back out so not for those who aren't steady on their feet. We entered the boat going through a low and dark tunnel which may of been quite oppressive if not not for the wonderful tour guide Max. He gave a confident and detailed history of the mine and had the whole group laughing.
The boats travels along at a nice pace, about half way through two boats have to pass then you continue on to the carven. Here you can get out of the boat and have a walk around. Mind you head when you get out of the boat, safe to say i was thankful i was wearing a hard hat.
The cavern area is very interesting and really high, combine that with the knowledge that the height of the cavern is a third of how far underground you are, its pretty deep! When you get off in the cavern another group get in the boat you came in and you wait for the next tour to arrive so you can get in there boat.
All in all a great day out and such a interesting experience, but i have to say the tour guide Max made it for us.

We saw this attraction on a leaflet at another property and after reading a few reviews and looking at the info leaflet we decided to make a visit. I can only say that this is a very average attraction. On arrival you need to pay £4.50 to park in the car park across the road ( admittedly you do get £2 back as a tour customer). You check in and take your place on the bench near the entrance to the cave entrance. After proceeding down the 106 steps you climb aboard the boat and travel for about 15 minutes listening to the guide (Yvonne) who was very knowledgeable and was probably the best bit of the tour..!! You then reach the massive cavern and bottomless pit ( as described in leaflet). This is little more then a tall cave with a few points of interest to look at with an area just big enough for about 10-12 people to stand. After about 5 mins your back in the boat and travel back down the same tunnel for another 10 mins to exit via the same steps. I have to say that we all left feeling very underwhelmed by the experience in relation to the price paid for the tour. We have done other cave tours around the country and in the Peak District and they all surpass this easily. If you’d like an interesting cave tour then we recommend the Temple Mine tour at Matlock Bath for the princely sun of £6.50 with a 45 minute underground tour with far more to see and experience in our opinion.

Does it get flooded when outdoor weather is heavy raining ? Is it still practicable ?
Speedwell & Peak Cavern
Castleton, UK
Hi there,
It is possible for the cave to flood when we experience heavy rainfall. When this occurs we are still able to run tours of the first chamber up to the flood water for half the price. If it has been raining heavy then it is definitely worth giving us a call before your visit to double check.
Thank you,

which is better Speedwell or Peak Cavern?
Speedwell & Peak Cavern
Castleton, UK
Both caves are totally different to one another and so it really depends on what you want to see. Peak Cavern is a large natural cavern, the only fully natural show cave in the immediate area, and hosts the largest entrance to a cavern in the British isles. This tour is 1 hour long detailing the history of the caves inhabitants and the unique geology throughout. Speedwell on the other hand is an 18th century lead mine. This visit is done mostly by boat, lasts roughly 45 minutes and discusses the history of lead mining down speedwell and in he local area itself. Tours at speedwell run every 20 minutes, tours at peak run on the hour every hour. Hope this helps.

Can you take dogs on the boat at speedwell cavern? April 2019 x
Speedwell & Peak Cavern
Castleton, UK
During the school Holidays and weekends when the cave is busy, we allow dogs that are able to sit on your lap for the duration of the trip, unfortunately larger dogs are unable to go due to the capacity of the boats. Our Sister Cavern, Peak Cavern ‘The Devils A**e’ allow dogs of all size all year round. Thank you.

Unfortunately due to the nature of the mine access is limited. There are 106 steps down to, and back up from, the boat. There are handrails on both sides of the steps and there is absolutely no rush to get down or up.

Yes you can however they do say when it's particularly busy the dog must be able to sit on your lap to save room in the boat when it's full.

Hi,
as many people have said this is not an attraction with easy access. definitely not for people in wheelchair due to the steep steps and boat access. Access to the boats is to step from the landing stage into the boat by standing onto a seat then into the boat. Once into the cavern it is not easy access out of the boat and those at the back have to climb over the bench seats to the front of boat and then there is a little tricky step out into the cave. then you have the return journey and all the steps to climb to exit the cave.
