It's FREE! This old Cemetary is beautiful, peaceful and filled with Texas History. Start your trek on the back left side as you enter the Cemetary. Jane Long, The Mother of Texas and Mirabeau Lamar, the 2nd President of the Republic of Texas are buried in that area. Look for the Texas Flag. Polly Ryan is also buried on that same side.

Check out the Gillespie Monument. (Robert Gillespie 1780-1825) was the first person buried in what became Morton Cemetery. He was a Mason from Scotland. This is the oldest Masonic grave west of the Mississippi!

One of the unique places to visit in Richmond. A place of final rest for many inhabitants of Richmond including several very famous pioneers and civil war participants. Take a few hours to stroll, read the tombstones, reflect and connect with our past. Truly a place to find peace.

Jane Long, Mirabeau Lamar and lots of local historical families are buried here. The old head stone are so neat to read as newer cemeteries have flat ones. If you are a Texan - you will enjoy a walk through a beautiful cemetery and sit under 100 year old oak trees

When family came to visit we took them on a self guided tour. Many historic figures are laid to rest at this site, including Mirabeau Lamar, the 2nd President of the Republic of Texas, Jane Long known as the Mother of Texas, Walter Moses Burton, Sheriff, Tax Collector and former slave, William Morton & others.

I only found out about while playing Pokemon Go. So I decided to walk the entire cemetery. I'm glad I did. I'm by no means a Cemetery fan, but seeing the Freemason's Monument right across from the First President of Texas was a little gem to run into. Plus the several other historical markers within the grounds makes for a interesting read.

So if you are a Proud Texan and in Richmond, I recommend spending 30 minutes there. Outside the historical aspect, its just another cemetery. Across from the main entrance is another historical residence but I have no idea what it is.

For the record I end up there every week or two.

Morton Cemetery is a very old cemetery dating back to about 1825. If you enjoy visiting old and historic cemeteries, this one will exceed your expectations. It contains several graves of famous Texans as well as those of rather dubious distinction. Well worth a stop while visiting Ft Bend County and the City of Richmond.

Site of several original settlers, and one of the Presidents of the Republic of Texas. Great for history buffs and genealogy buffs.
