Called "the jewel of the bay" for good reason; this beauty (in all its glory) sits in a most remarkable park. The style is eye-popping Art Deco with hints of Mission/Spanish Revival but still with a look over its shoulder to the classical lines and columns of Beaux-Art (with a modern touch).
The multi-story, tower-topped building was a WPA project (circa 1938) depression-era construction, often characterized by the influence of the style of art during the period. Coit Tower in San Francisco has great murals inside that express this purely American style of art.
Outside is a very beautiful fountain sculpture of a woman holding a jug of water. It's name is "Guardian of Water" and it symbolizes San Diego's role in being a responsible custodian of its water resources. It was installed in 1939 and was carved from a single, 22-ton, slab of granite. Quite spectacular.
The environment of the County Administration building is an urban delight of a park. Waterfront Park is the place little children frolic in the water feature fountains, play on the most artistic and creative equipment we've ever seen, anywhere at anytime. The newly married couples from the County Administration building also promenade the grounds, bouquets in hand.
This building just feels good in every respect. Perfection, that is what this is!
